david gregory and chuck todd joining me. t were passed over. david, you first with regard to rob portman. >> highly regarded, part of the bush administration, that could have been a liability as he was budget director in the bush administration at a time when deficits began to expand and a lot of conservatives were highly critical of the bush administration for that. but portman was seen as a safe pick. somebody who knows the ways of washington and ways of the senate and former congressman as well and all important ohio. there was a lot of talk he was the lead finalist as you move down the stretch because he could reinforce governor romney while still doing no harm. with the ryan pick, we can safely say mitt romney felt he neededed to go a bit bolder and bigger. >> i now you have tim pawlenty tomorrow. but to you, chuck, tim pawlenty was somebody who was running his own presidential campaign against mitt romney. what do you think the big reason is that he was not chosen? because many see him as having been the good soldier. >

political director, chief white house correspondent chuck todd, moderator of "meet the press" david gregory and garrett haake, he is one of our campaign embeds, he has been covering romney every day on the road for 13 months. there are few people who have seen more of the inner workings of this campaign than garrett so garrett, we'll start with you, and given how much you know about this campaign, how close you've been able to get to the candidate, how did the atmospherics of all this look to you today? >> brian, as you said, in 13 months i've really not quite seen anything quite like this today. the energy level was a step up completely from even some of the big rallies during the primary campaign. you had crowds lining the street. the events were loud. people were shouting back at romney and at paul ryan. they were chanting "usa," really an incredible atmosphere, and you could see even the candidates sort of react to it. romney was tripping over words, things he says every day in his stump speech, and pacing around the stage, just a high-energy environment. the romney campaign knows they

. >> david gregory, i want to go back to the issue of paul ryan. we know what he brings as far as definition on the ticket and issues, but this is a person with just a congressional resume. not a lot of foreign policy experience. does that leave romney vulnerable at all? >> well, i think it does. there will be questions about his experience. can you picture him in the white house as president being a heart beat away from the presidency? so those questions will come up. i think romney will be prepared to deal with that. the reality is, what he's chosen is someone who really is a big strategic thinker on the budget, a controversial thinker, but someone who is certainly a strong conservative on those issues. let's not forget in this conversation how much suspicion there still is among conservatives about mitt romney. and it was reinforced this week, just on the issue of health care. so in paul ryan, he's found somebody who can continue to energize that base. i know people will say, well, where are they going? social kivatives and fiscal conservatives

. >> we are joined by the moderator of "meet the press," david gregory. is medicare the conversation the romney-ryan ticket wanted to be having now? >> they knew they would face the conversation at some point, lester. but picking paul ryan meant that they were going to have to deal with it right away and that's the case. what you have seen and you saw it from paul ryan today and mitt romney and the campaign this week, they have done a couple of things. president obama is right. they have gone on offense. they are trying to argue that there are benefits to their approach to this. it doesn't affect current seniors. they have ways to save the program over the long haul even though there hasn't been evidence to prove putting it to the rigor of the private sector would do that. they are trying to contrast what they want to do with medicare with the president's health care law. that's an unpopular law whereas medicare is more popular. they've at least got some room to run here. it's giving some republicans some hope. >> ryan has taken up attention of the last w

nbc's david gregory meets us from outside the convention center. t the republican national convention. all the speeches build up to this hour tonight, mitt romney's hour. speaking to this hall and they hope a very sizeable television audience at a critical time. this is a necessity for romney to speak about himself and the country. but the biography we talked about all week is so important. he has really got to impress that at times on certain sections of the country, a much more skeptical public. people who don't know him. or if you look at the polling, people thinking about his image and the inability to connect. in the press conference with the senator from new hampshire, somebody who spent a good deal of time with governor romney, that is where i began my questions. >> i want to talk about romney, because for all that has been said here and however people judge this convention it really does come down to his speech. and so much of this is about biography, you know him, you campaigned with him. what do you think american needs to see about him? >

"meet the press" moderator david gregory is joining us. important for each candidate equally? >> no question. too different to call. this is an o -- a state that romney would like to turn. quhs why the president is campaigning so much, so an intense focus and difficult to call. >> the latest polls seem to give the president the edge, but does that matter? >> his people will tell you they're not looking at anything like that and taking it too positively. the race is too volatile and fundamentally too close. romney folks actually say some of the same things, but we're seeing not just in virginia, but other battlegrounds that the president is edging ahead. that is where things are headed. >>> how about the vice presidential pick? just two weeks to go until the convention. a lot of pressure on mitt romney. >> he could name a pick tomorrow unless he doesn't. [ laughter ] which is -- >> what are you hearing? >> well, you know, a lot of the smart money is probably the middle of next week, get through the olympics, begin that ramp-up to the republican convention. i think that's most l

david gregory is moderator of "meet the press" and chuck todd is the political director. good to have you both this morning. david, let me start you. i think it's fair to say that a lot of people are saying paul who? 38% of the u.s. has not even heard of the congressman. tell us about him and tell us why he's regarded as a bold pick. >> well, he's young. he's 42 years old. he looks look younger than that. he's part of a conservative wave in the house of representatives who put his own name to the house budget blueprint which was pretty controversial. it didn't pass, talked about cutting spending and also changing the medicare program for seniors introducing the voucher program. made it very controversial from the start. even among some fellow republicans. newt gingrich notely called it right wing conservative engin r engineering. but conservatives have rallied around paul ryan. he talked about the debt and the fiscal crisis and he'll be a powerful voice for mitt romney on dealing with both the economy and the fiscal crisis that the country faces. but there are downsides as
