he went in through south of new zealand. he sailed down. the place you can get closest to the pole by ship -- and you can only get there in the antarctic summer because it's frozen with just sea ice over the top and so a ship can't get in, but it opens up in the antarctic summer. the sea ice open toes up, and you can sail in quite close because you think of antarctica as a plate or as a dish. but actually it has a peninsula sticking way out on the side under the americas, and it's got a big gouge cut out of it almost like a piece of the pie taken out which is the raw sea south of new zealand. and so if you sail in that way in the summer, you can sail in a hot further. so what he'd done is he'd sailed in the previous summer, that would be the summer of 1910-'11, wintered over in a base that he built this the, at the southern part of the ross sea right on the ross ice shelf, something known as the bay of whales which is a cut in the ice shelf, brought down a prefabricated cabin, his dogs, nine men, and they wintered there. when it was spring,

mike inouye. >> looking to the south bay. northbound route folks showing that build typical about this time. pattern on our maps 101, 680, slower drive just developing. that's the second burst of the morning that will kick in. but the first one didn't hit too hard. expecting a smooth flow an hour from now, that's when we'll see the south bay northbound routes as the commute will build. in the east bay, we see the slight build for 880 toward mission boulevard and 880 through hayward and the san mateo bridge. live camera for the san mateo bridge shows you traffic in the westbound commute direction moves nicely and smooth across to the high-rise and peninsula without disturbance. back to the maps. smoother drive there as well as dumbarton bridge, highway 84, both take you to 101 to the east bay and palo alto for a lot of folks working there. south bound 880 off of 238 build. same thing for the tri-valley. predictable pattern to livermore and the tri-valley. bay bridge, this is what's showing extra slow, west 580 off of 24. the e

most of the action will be centered over south jersey and delaware. we can't rule out something popping later in the afternoon or nighttime up north, but, again, most of the stuff is to the south. doesn't look like it's an all day thing, certainly. up in allentown, less humid, warm, 85 still warm in the lehigh valley. down the shore it could be dicey at times with the chance of a shower passing through or spotty thunderstorm. when it isn't raining it will be nice, 82. uv index will be high at times because it's not going to be a washout today and occasionally the sun will break out. philadelphia, spotty storms possible most of the those down in south jersey and delaware, 86 is the high, winds not that strong today. there's how numbers will go. notice how we get up the high of 86 fairly early at 2:00 p.m. and we're back down to 81 degrees at 5:00 p.m. for tomorrow looks like a decent day overall, but the model are hinting at a pop upping sprinkle or shower later in the afternoon. it's in and out of the picture, generally tomorrow is a pretty nice one.

we are tracking some wet weather through south jersey and delaware, too.moving into the atlantic city area and heavier downpours have popped up in southwestern kent county in delaware. those are also moving towards new jersey. to start with, a new scattered showers after sunshine. wet weather to the west, that is a possibility again for us today. in fact, future weather shows noontime showers once again in delaware and south jersey, those will move offshore. and then this afternoon, north and west we'll see showers and possibly thunderstorms fire up during the 3:00 hour. there's a potential for thunderstorms in delaware and south jersey, too. with those storms we could see gusty winds. maybe not to the levels we had yesterday but there's a possibility of additional damage later today. for today, you will see in between the storms and the showers we'll get sunshine and a warmup, too. not as hot as yesterday. the upper 80s to near 90 degrees this afternoon. but keep an eye on the sky, especially this afternoon for more thunderstorms rolling through the area.

lightning, trenton the area in mercer county, we have severe thunderstorm warnings in affect across south jersey and delaware, this is really the focus of most of the activity, that is where we get that training. this is the cell right now near trenton, you can see it's crossing i-95, route 31 and 206, and 14 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes and it's moving to the north at 25 miles per hour. that is moving out of our viewing area. this is south jersey though, 94 lightning strikes right here between woodsbury, woodstown and berlin. can you see how these storms are aligned from the southwest to the northeast, and they are moving in that direction, when that happens, have you to be concerned with flash flooding and we have already seen the flash flooding happening. so i have to repeat myself again. turn around don't drown, do not try to drive over floodwaters, here is a cell near smyrna moving east of chestertown crossing route 300, 114 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes, moving across the mouth of delaware bay into salem county. all of this activity is ahead of a very strong c
