for an explanation, let's talk to meteorologist doug kammerer. >> ws last night at 11:00 and even on my facebook page we talked about it the last couple days. the clipper system that moves into our region if it was by itself we would have gotten a nice 2 to 4 inches maybe 3 to 5. we predicted 1 to 3 and this is what happens. that clipper system moves our way but as it moves our way it develops another system just off the coast here. so that other system will become an area of low pressure and that's the same storm that's going to hammer parts of the northeast. but for us it takes all of the moisture and just moves it right out to the coast essentially robbing us from data. as the clipper dies quickly, the coastal storm developed and we are literally robbed of any good snows. that's what's going on now. now we have to wait for the second system to develop to see if we get any banding on the backside. not everybody's going to see it tonight. >> that is always hard to kind of figure out those bands around the areas of low pressure more moderate snows start setting up. 28 by morning, 29

let's go to storm team 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer with more on what we can expect here overnight. doug? >> we've seen some pretty good changes over the last hour or so. that clipper system that made its way through has now transferred all the energy off the coast and now that coastal low developing and it's sending moisture back our way. let's take a look at the radar and show you what i mean. this is probably the most snow we've seen since about noon or 1:00 today. lots of snow coming down in portions of prince george's county montgomery coun back to the west.o put this into motion for you because i want you to take a look at what's happening. we have snow moving in from the west snow moving in from the coast on the east. they are going to collide here and what's happening, that's going to be an area that we see develop and i'm expecting this area down around fairfax county loudoun county where it may be snowing just a little bit, i expect that to fill in and i do expect to see more snow into this area. what are we going to see from this? we have our winter weather ad that conti

and, yes, a couple of inches but meteorologist doug kammerer you've bp taking a look at what areas could be really impacted the greatest from this storm system. >> yeah veronica. we first mentioned the fact we really like this pattern for snow during the day yesterday. what i mean by that is this is not your typical storm that will be making its way out of the north and then maybe the rain/snow line moves in. this is different. we call these storms southern sliders. they come back from the west. cold air is in place. saturday is going to be one cold day. you know we've got the cold air in place. the system itself actually is way down toward the southwest. that's where the moisture is coming from. it will combine be with an area of low pressure up to the north and give us a storm system that develops just down to our south, keeping the cold air there. that means we have a very good chance for accumulating snowfall. how about the impacts on sunday? we think there will be moderate impacts. that includes folks towards extreme southern maryland, the northern neck areas around fredericksburg a

chief meteorologist doug kammerer is here to talk about the cold weather and what we can expect. >> things will get a lot colder. would not be surprised to see a few more water main breaks across our region as temperatures drop well below the teens. on the radar, not a whole lot happening. wasn't too far for snow. gaithersburg picking up 3.5 inches burke at 3 inches last night. martinsburg, 4.3. not too bad on the storm. shower activeity coming fru loudoun county. these are very light snow showers, flurries that will pass to the south. you may see them in manassas in the next hour or so. it's all spinning around that big area of low pressure. you can continue to see the blizzard really continuing to pound the boston area already over 30 inches of snow in many portions of that region. blizzard warnings up towards maine. this evening we'll be seeing temperatures that will continue to drop. it will be cold tonight so heading into the city, 33 at 7:00 31 by 9:00 30 degrees by 11:00. a very cold day tomorrow windchills in the single digits. those are coming up. >>> up in massachusetts, thousand

here's our chief meteorologist doug kammerer looking ahead at the next round of winter weather. how bad is it going to be? >> that's the thing wendy. right now it's looking better and better as far as less and less winter-like weather. because of the temperatures. they've been on the warm side and will continue to be until this event starts tomorrow night. look at the numbers today, upwards of 50 degrees in d.c. same in fredericksburg 45 towards frederick. we need some kind of cold air to move in and that's not going to happen. storm team 4 radar showing nothing around our region. we won't see anything until tomorrow evening, but we are watching this storm, and it is a big storm and it is a perfect scenario. a lot of moisture out of the gulf moving up the coast. that's the kind of storm that could bring us a lot of snowfall. this one will also bring a little more warm air associated with it so this is not going to be a big snow et vent for us. we are still going to get some snow though pip eel break it down who has the best chance to see snow. two storms another moves in on sund

meteorologist doug kammerer is joining us. >> take a look at the numbers. it's freezing everywhere. below freezing as jackie just showed you. 21 in gaithersburg. we're going to continue to drop as the temperatures go because of the clear skies. winds are starting to die just a little bit we will see clear skies. it will bring a mixture of rain and snow that could affect your afternoon rush tomorrow. we'll talk about that and the weather for super bowl sunday. >> thanks, doug. >>> fire investigators say that a christmas tree helped fuel the flames of a massive fire at a mansion in annapolis a few days ago. tonight, investigators say without a doubt sprinklers would have made a difference. our darcy spencer reports that sprinklers may be required to be put in new homes. >> reporter: they could opt out of the lay requiring sprinklers in new homes. that is about to change. but tonight, the state fire marshal told me he's concerned that some lawmakers may try to keep that exemption. >> reporter: would a sprinkler system have prevented the death of those in this water front mansion? >> wi

let's head outside to meteorologist doug kammerer with more on what you can expect overnight. >> yeahlast started off with snow and now we'll see extremely cold temperatures. tonight the sun will set in about the next ten minutes or so and what we're going to see here are water. the snow and ice will quickly turn over to all ice in the area. notice everybody that saw snow today, below freezing. 30 in manassas 30 in leesburg. 25 in gaithersburg. 28 in martinsburg. the warm spots, charlottesville, fredericksburg, in the upper 30s to 40. snow snow towards that area but some areas will see problems overnight. everything will freeze. roads will become slick. walking will be tough as far as sidewalks are concerned. so please give yourself extra time. we saw a lot of accidents early this morning. i think we could see more tonight. and then again tomorrow especially in some of those side roads. vj now we're talking about not just the cold but the wind chills. >> right. and really you've got to prepare yourself for the next two days. the next two days temperatures like these in the 20s, below

but first we start with chief meteorologist doug kammerer. what's coming? >> this is what we were talking about earlier at 5:00 and6:00. we'll only see another one to two inches. that's what we've seen since about 6:00. but because of the cold temperatures we're really starting to see problems on the roadway. loudoun county prince george's county they've been hit all evening with the snow. some locations picking up two and three inches up near frederick county. it will be here for the next couple of hours. the blizzard taking place up towards boston nantucket island reporting 62-mile-per-hour winds. they're seeing a lot of snowp. for us the snow will continue for the next couple of hours. winter advisory in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morn. an additional one inch between now and 3:00 a.m. we're almost done with the snow. one thing we're not done with slick roads. i do expect more delays and cancellations through tomorrow morning. i'll be back to let you know what to expect tomorrow. >> right now in d.c. a cold emergency plan is in effect. the alert is activ

chief meter ougs doug kammerer shows us what we can expect and more importantly when. >> right now it's just the rain for the most part. we've had that warmer air that's made its way in. because of that we're having mostly rain now. but there is still sleet and some snow making its way in from time to time mostly back towards the west. we're seeing heavy rain come through the region. right on through the d.c. metro area. this is just the start. we're not done yet. we have another 12 hours of this to go. look at the moisture down to the south. we'll watch as this moisture moves in then the cold air back to the west will also begin to make its way back into our region. because of the colder air and because we're still seeing areas of sleet and temperatures near freezing that winter weather advisory continues until noon for areas to the west of i-95. back to the west they've expanded the winter storm warning back into west virginia we continue to see snow in these areas, continue to see freezing rain. travel could be a problem as we make our way through tomorrow morning, but then we get re

meteorologist, doug kammerer with more on what we can expect next. >> well guys you mentioned the fact the snow is out of here and now it is a watch as far as what we're going to see over the next 12 to 24 hours as the real cold sets in. but this is the way things have looked over the last 12 hours or so. and you can see the snow making its way on in through the area starting off at 5:00 a.m. notice the snow really coming down and as we mentioned last night, coming down during rush hour. that was when we saw the biggest problems. yes, we did get more snow than expected. but it was that rush hour temperatures very cold. that's why we had so many problems on those roads. storm team 4 radar now not showing anything around our region. but we did pick up a significant amount of snow. snowfall today, ashburn, around 4.3 inches. rockville, over 4 inches. reston 3.5 inches. reagan national coming in at about 2.4 inches of snow. so yes, definitely seeing some higher totals than expected across our region. and now we're looking at the temperatures. notice as we move into the overnight hours, tem

we're talking about rain and meteorologist doug kammerer has been tracking that rain when it moves in and what we can expect. >> yeah. maybe a little snow on the backside of that storm system. that s its way in from the west. lit move up from the coast as it always does. those storm systems will develop very close to our area. as it develops a little farther to the south and a little closer inland it could be in the way of a little bit of rain changing to snow as the cold air filters in behind the storm, but the storm will bring us a couple of different things. first periods of rain most likely from i 95 to the east. we don't think this will be a washout so don't worry too much. but this is mainly afternoon rain nothing too heavy. and then we're turning colder by the end of the afternoon. so temperatures will be in the mid-40s on sunday but then much colder as we head into the night and of course martin luther king day. v.j.? >> as we go into the early part of next week there for that holiday, 41 degrees the high temperature. right now we're talking about nice conditions just a few cl

[ no audio ] >> currently sitting at 27 right now. 18 in gaithersburg. so it's already on the cold side. fredericksburg around 34 degrees. there is nothing on the radar right now. that storm is still well off to our west. back cords the chicago area. you can see the snow making its way through portions of iowa, through portions of the illinois area. it will move into our region and that's why we have that winter weather advisory from 4:00 a.m. tomorrow until 1:00 in the afternoon. actually i believe it goes until 5:00 in the afternoon for areas around the d.c. metro region back to the north and west. we are expecting some accumulating snow as well. i'll let you know who is going to see what. we'll break it down as far as timing is concerned. but the big factor tomorrow morning, i think, will be rush hour. we'll talk much more about this coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> team coverage continues now with our transportation reporter adam tuss. he's been looking at the efforts

meteorologist doug kammerer is in storm center 4 with details. >> been talking about this storm for about a week. this next storm does look like it may just be almost all snow across the region. it's going to have some big impacts on our sunday night into monday. it's another clipper system so we've got the jet stream with the cold air here and today's storm will help to bring that colder air in across our region. here comes the clipper dropping down around chicago and then dropping just to our south. that is an ideal condition for clippers to produce snowfall around our region. that means the cold air is in place, also means we're in the heaviest moisture. and because of that we've got rain/snow starting on sunday night, but then all snow overnight sunday into early monday. we are expecting cancellations as far as schools and things like that are concerned because we expect to see accumulating snow especially through the early morning hours on monday. v.j.? >> that's when that arctic air moves in and stays here so for the weekend with the storm system number one, the high 41 degrees, you

let's get the latest from doug kammerer who is tracking it. >> we've seen the snow come in and move out of the region as we moved over the last couple of hours here. the biggest thing we've seen is we're going to continue to watch as temperatures dip below freezing. yes, that will be an issue re-freezing on the roads. look at the storm team 4 radar. notice this is over the last five hours from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. this was it. we told you this would be a short duration event with the heaviest snow between 11:00 and 2:00. that's exactly what we saw across the area. but down to the south and east no snow. this was all rain around waldorf and lenonardleonardstown. that system is moving out and we have nothing on the radar. the radar is now clear. some areas did pick up some pretty good amounts as far as snowfall goes. damascus about 3.5, now up to 3.8 in that area. hughesville, virginia 2.8, greenbelt, maryland about 0.5, about the same as the airport picked up. i'm watching not just one but two storms. we are talking snow with both of them one could be a little bigger. we'll talk mohr

storm team 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is tracking another drop in our temperatures and our next chance for snow. doug? >>> i'm just looking at that sunset. that's nice and pretty on a very cold day. windchills today only in the upper teens, lower 20s in some areas. take a look at the high temperatures our average is 44 for this time of year. we were at 38 today 34 in leesburg. that's some cold air. you combine that with the wind and it feels even colder. look at the current windchills down to 19 in gaithersburg 24 manassas, 20 winchester. we will see the winds relax a little bit, but as they relax, the temperatures are able to fall and able to fall quickly. i think we get down close to the freezing mark in the d.c. metro area. you mentioned that water main break. we could see some slick roads coming up around 9:00 and 11:00. much more on this and plus two chances for snow including super bowl sunday, in a minute. >>> new information coming in tonight about a deadly attack that killed an american in libya. chris lawrence at our live desk with more. >> jim, militants with isis hav

. >> doug kammerer is watching it all and tracking the radar right now. doug what are you seeing? >> you can see the ice on the river as well. one thing to note everybody coming out of l'enphant plaza, they ear waiting for those buses, they're about to get some heavier rain. it's raining lightly downtown but here comes heavier rain through porss of fairfax county into the dist in the next 15 20 minutes. here's that dark area through fairfax county coming right across falls church and right in towards downtown in the next 15 to 20 minutes. everybody else seeing light shower activity. that will continue as we move on through the evening. we're not quite done just yet. we have to go through this area down toward roanoke. that will come through in about the next four to five hours. this will be something that stays with us through the rest of the night. then look back to the western part of our system. notice the snow. we're not going to get any of, that but what this tells us is there's colder air back to the west. current temperatures 39 degrees in d.c. on the chilly side but only 3

well meteorologist doug kammerer nailed it from storm center 4. just as you ordered it up. >> we were talking about areas north and west of i-95 not really seeing anything at all. this would mostly be a southern maryland system. that's exactly what we had here. but we had an inch toward culpeper and towards la ray issues this morning with a little bit of a snow burst that developed right during the early morning hours. we'll take a look go back 12 hours. you can see what i'm talking about. most of the snow down here but look at the snow burst around culpeper and warrenton. it quickly fizzled out toward our areas. upwards of 1 to 2 inches south and east and through southern maryland. right now nothing on the radar, the storm is out of here. behind it just like always we've got the colder air. look at the windchills down to 21 in gaithersburg 26 in d.c. 23 in manassas more cold air over the next couple of days. we will moderate some towards the weekend, but now we're watching another storm that will affect the weekend. i've got that for you in a min

let's get first to storm team 4's doug kammerer. >> you mentioned northwest, the areas that saw the most snow out of this event. this little clipper came in quickly and moved out just as fast. some areas picking up pretty good snow totals. this is a five-hour loop from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. that's it a five-hour period of snow right around d.c. take a look. by 3:00, it was out of here. but not before producing some pretty good snow totals in through parts of montgomery howard frederick and portions of loudoun counties. down to the south, this was not snow. this was rain for you folks into southern maryland toward the northern neck. enough nothing on the radar. the only thing we'll be watching now is the re-freeze moving into the overnight hours, temperatures already below freezing. that could be the issue as we make our way into earlier tomorrow morning. we'll talk about that and plus there are two storms on the way. yeah we're talking more snow in the forecast. >>> this is what it looked like earlier today in downtown annapolis near the maryland statehouse when the first wave of sn

let's head over to storm center 4 with doug kammerer and go county by county. >> talking about the impacts and the area with bigger impacts. we think those will be down to the south and east. e talked about that yesterday. today we've honed in on that area. greatest area of impact well south and east of d.c. fairfax county loudoun county montgomery county areas that got hit hard last week not going to get hard with this storm. you may not see anything. it's down south and east of i-95 but could include the district and parts of the belt way through most of southern maryland expecting icy conditions and a slow commute, especially from waldorf up to d.c. fredericksburg towards d.c. but down to the south the snow and the ice could be an issue. yes, we could see some delays early tomorrow morning. but we're not talking a lot of snow veronica. like last week this is all about the timing and the cold temperatures that we'll see overnight tonight. >> exactly. and the timing of this is between 4:00 and about 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, the most critical time period of course the morning rush. here

and there's even another one as we look toward the weekend and doug kammerer has more on that. >> that's the big one everybody is talking about now. we've heard bigger stories from this storm and it will have a little more of a punch to our area coming up on sunday into the day on monday. let's take a look at it before we get too excited about snow. the weekend shows that saturday there will be cold air in place. we'll see a lot of it. we have high temperatures in the 20s on saturday. so it's set for a storm. but this storm is coming from way back to the west. we're talking act areas down toward the southwest, getting snow into -- or rain in california. that same storm system moves across the country and brings up a little bit in the way of mild air. so it's a stronger storm but it may be too warm. i do think we may have a chance to see some snow but snow to rain is the best chance right now, not putting too much on that storm, but of course it is one we are going to watch as we've seen the last couple day, we'll watch it all the way until it makes its way our way. v.j.? >> of course we'

done with the snow with more on the pattern that we can expect and what's next for us let's go to doug kammerer. >> we've seen this pattern over the last couple of weeks really. we've been talk in the day six, day seven time period warming temperatures. e get closer we're back to the cold. i think that's the case as well. earlier this week we talked about the weekend being on the milder side and dry. that is now changing. take a look. cold weather is what we have right now and what we had today that helped uso produce a little bit of snow. the forecast, cold air to the north, nice weather to the south. but we are still in the cold for saturday and sunday and an area of low pressure will develop. that area of low pressure will on sunday and could even snow before chilling things off again toward next week. the pattern for some reason wants to stay on the cold side. >> of course that means we've got to keep our guard up, right? of course we do. and you need to keep it tuned here to news4 and storm team 4. high temperature of 44 for your friday the weekend we move into the low and miefd-40s. next

. >> tina fey team coverage doug kammerer tracking the snow expected overnight. >> it's not just thef the season. >> which is why we mentioned this days ago, storm team 4. here it comes, get ready. >> first it is the snow. let's show what's happening now. no snow on the radar. storm team 4 radar is clear. back to the west, this is where we're seeing our little clipper system. it's making its way down from canada now in through portions of ohio making its way to our -- or iowa rather making its way to the great lakes and then down towards our region. the winter weather advisory in effect for the day tomorrow especially for the morning hours. it does include d.c. and prince george's county fairfax county prince william county and everybody to the north and west. and we are expecting the snow to begin around the 5:00 a.m. hour. so early snow timing between 5:00 a.m. and about noon. so it's not too long but it happens just during rush hour. once again, more snow will be up towards the north and west. but this is a two-prong system. we're not just talking about the snow. we think the bigg

and that's where we find meteorologist doug kammerer all the way on the west coast. >> good afternoon, veronica. here at lake tahoe for a weather conference as a matter of fact. it's actually called operation sierra storm in south lake tahoe. you're right. they are asking for the snow. they need the snow they also need the colder temperatures. they have not seen that much in the way of colder temperatures here. temperatures today around 50 degrees. and that's even at about 7, 8, 10,000 feet. took a couple runs earlier, the snow very, very soft. but this is a conference that's been here the last couple years. meteorologists from all over the country gather together here to learn much more about the weather, of course and obviously climate change too. that's a big topic today. earlier we heard from one person who actually was a first lady ever the first woman ever to go to all three poles. what i mean by that is the north pole the south pole and the cold pole in the middle of siberia. the first woman ever. that was a fascinating talk. we talked about climate change as well as far as wha

let's go straight to doug kammerer. how is it looking and who's going to get the worst of it? >> you mentioned the plows. i don't think this is going to be one we'll have to plow a whole lot for but i think we'll see some heavy wet snow out of this. temperatures will be very close to if not a little bit above freezing. this is not going to be like the last event where our temperatures were in the 20s and everything was sticking on the roads. but it's still going to be a significant event between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. that's what we're thinking. snow/rain mix. that rain/snow line around d.c., south of d.c. mostly rain north of d.c. mostly snow. a trace to two inches in some spot, maybe a little more. the driving forecast is going to be critical here. the a.m. i think this is going to be late a.m. rush. the early rush hour should be fine. the afternoon rush may be okay too. we'll continue to wacht. i'll have the latest on school delays or cancellations at :15. >> thank you, doug. >>> the snow could make for dangerous driving in maryland tomorrow. here's interstate 270 in montg
