. >> let's get to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz who's tracking the rain and change in temperatures coming along with it. glenn? >> somewhat of a change in temperatures, but it's not exactly going to drop dramatically and we broke some records today. we smashed some, broke the record in philadelphia by a degree so far, but wilmington broke the record by six degrees, allentown broke a record by eight degrees. that is unheard of. 69 degrees in philly now, 70 in northeast philly. near 70 in dover and, of course, the warm air continues across the entire region. showers approaching, not especially heavy or quickly, so most of the afternoon rush looks like it's going to be dry, but you can see, obviously, some of that rain that is going to be moving in as we head toward 6:00, 7:00 tonight. most of it on the light side and kind of scattered until 11:00, but it is going to stay warm tonight. look at these temperatures staying in the mid 60s as the showers increase during the evening hours. we'll see just how much cooler it's going to get. eventually we're getting a cold blast,

host: we're talking with nelson schwartz. i want to go back a story. rates are going up what could go wrong. as you point out in your piece, the fed embarking on a new chapter in monetary policy with regard to the feds's policy and the impact it has on consumers in the next year. what are you sensing? guest: so far, logistically, the rate increases got off successfully. this is the first rate hike in nearly ten years. there are people on wall street trading desk who never lived through a rate hike before, at least professionally. i think the fed is sort of -- it's kind of feeling its way just like the rest of us. see if the economy can handle it it. europe raised rates couple of times in 2011 and it proved to be premature. there was a double dip recession since the economy couldn't handle it there. i think most people think, u.s. economy is strong enough to handle just a one quarter of one percent. rates are still hat historic lows. i think this hike it will take time to percolate the economy. most people feel like the economy can handle it. host: we k

let's check in with glenn gw schwartz glenn for a look at the weekend, glenn? >> the weekend is going to be significantly warmer than what we're seeing today, and today is about 15 degrees above normal. so yesterday we got to 62. so far today 60, temperature held down by some of the clouds we were talking about, but over the weekend it's going back up. 68 degrees on saturday, near 70 on sunday. the average is 46. and both of those days could see records across many parts of the area. 59 degrees in philadelphia right now, but it is 60 in mount holly, millville, dover is 62, wildwood 63. that's the warm spot, and the cool spot, 54 in mount pocono. that is outrageous for this time of the year, even too warm at night for them to be making snow. you see those clouds coming across right now, but there's nothing on the radar close by. the clouds will also help keep the temperature up during the night tonight, so it's not going to be a cold night at all. take a look at this, by 8:00, about 58 degrees. and then we're still in the 50s by 11:00. cloudy skies, no rain, and

nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. glenn?ey're not getting natural snow and it's too warm to make snow and those problems are going to continue for those folks. there are people who like cold and snow. not everybody is going to like this seven-day forecast. well, we don't have a whole lot of wind now, but the wind that we do have is generally coming out of the south and warming us up. yesterday we got up to 58 degrees and the average high temperature now is down to 46. so 62 today, 65, then 68. we're talking about more than 20 degrees above normal as we head through the weekend. now, this morning it wasn't all that cold. one of the cold spots, quakertown at 37, pottstown 38 degrees. but as you can see, the other parts of the area in the 40s. 47 in northeast philly for a low temperature. again, the average high is 46. it's what the official low was in philadelphia this morning and you can see millville 39 degrees. there are a lot of december mornings where you can get down into the single digits or teens, let alone what we're

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with that forecast. probably another day, glenn?> yeah, and we're going to see a lot more hours of this. the this is steady rain. these are not just showers from time to time and all the roads are wet, causing all sorts of problems for the morning rush and we expect some difficulty for the afternoon rush as well because look what's coming in here. it's raining in the philadelphia area now but there's even heavier rain that is approaching. coming into newcastle county right now, cecil county in maryland, about to hit chester county and it's coming toward the philadelphia area, coming up i-95. that's not necessarily going to last a long time. it's a narrow zone of that yellow that you see but there's plenty more rain back to the west in maryland and virginia. so you can see this area of the heavier rain and it's darker green and the yellows and so it will be coming down a bit heavier. 15 straight hours of light rain reported in philly international. as we go through the afternoon things will be quieting down a little bit, tapering off

glenn "hurricane" schwartz has your new year's eve forecast. what's it going to be, glenn? >> little more typical of new year's eve weather. we've had this incredible warmth during the month of december and once these clouds break up a little bit and we do expect them to, the temperature will be dropping down in through the 40s. we've seen a lot of nights where we haven't gone below 40 degrees. tonight is one of those nights it's going to go below. you can see the clouds out there right now preventing the temperature from getting higher than it did. still got into the 50s today, but really nothing on the radar to show you right now, because the clouds really aren't that thick. atmosphere overall, still relatively dry. it's 50 degrees in philadelphia now, upper 40s surrounding kraers, mid 40s farther north, all of those places with above average temperatures. as the clouds break up through the evening, temperatures start to drop. by midnight we're at 38 degrees with a bit of a breeze, but nothing too substantial. we'll talk about some really cold weather that is in the seven

nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glaurts glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the windy forecast. glenn? >> if we didn't have any past weather, we would say today is an unusually mild day except that it's ten degrees colder than yesterday. we have a fair amount of sunshine, flags blowing hard. we have wind coming in and eventually bring us cooler werth. not that much cooler, 60 degrees. the average high is 45. so we've gone from 25 above normal to only 15 degrees above normal. 55 in allentown, reading, potts town, mount pocono 48 degrees. there were more records set just after midnight so philadelphia sets a fourth record in a row. wilmington another record, allentown, trenton, georgetown, delaware, adding to the records we had yesterday. this is one difference from yesterday. it's pretty windy. a 24 mile an hour sustained wind in philadelphia right now gusts up close to 35. and that's going to be one of the stories today. because you can see the wind diminishing as we go through the evening. the temperatures slowly dropping as we go through the afternoon but, again, that's still

. >> chief meteorologist glenn schwartz is here with a look at our forecast. >> we've got almost 10 degreesabove average today, even with a fair amount of cloud cover. and this is just the beginning of the warm-up. the flag is blowing. it's a southerly wind, bringing up warmer air. 56 so far today. 62 tomorrow. then 65, 68 on saturday. the average high, 47 degrees. we're likely to set some records over the weekend. 56 in philadelphia now. it's even 52 at pottstown and allentown, while it's 41 in mount pocono. a lot of 54s in wildwood, atlantic city. it's going to be a lot warmer than that everywhere. we've seen a fair amount of cloud cover, early morning fog. more clouds back to the west. but there really isn't any rain to be tracking. so it's going to stay dry. the temperature, look at this, not dropping very much overnight. by midnight, still 50 degrees. we'll see how warm it's going to get over the weekend and how long it will last in the seven-day forecast, in a few minutes. >>> a forklift hit and killed a pedestrian in camden counterin wi -- camden county. investigators are trying to f

. >> let's go to glenn "hurricane" schwartz. before we deal with more rain we have to worry about dense fog out there. >> there is a little bit of fog around right now. i think it's going to get more dense as the night goes on. we can still see fairly well outside the studio now but we can also see that there is hardly any wind, the humidity is very high. the ground is wet. and it's kind of a nice combination for fog. we don't have any rain that is around right now, but the clouds are thickening back to the west and southwest. and that's going to eventually lead to rain and eventually come up this way. the other thing going up, the temperature. it was only 43 sunday. 57 yesterday. 61 today. going for 68 tomorrow. that actually happening tomorrow evening. and then an easier record to break on thursday. 60 degrees right now. in philadelphia area. so it's going to be warm all night tonight. but that's still nothing compared to christmas eve. one for the record books coming up in just a few minutes. >>> the philadelphia police depar

chief blonmeteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us now, glenn? >> the rain's not really going to cool things down a whole lot, but we did set records throughout the area today. we have some rain across the area now. you can see it moving in just during the past couple of hours. generally on the lighter side, little bit heavier up towards the pocono mountains, as you can see, little bit of the yellow there and also a little bit of yellow headed towards chester county at the moment. this is north of allentown, for the more significant rain falling. poconos should see more rain than anybody else. over the next couple of hours, showers actually diminish somewhat, generally on the lighter side, we're not expe expecting thunderstorms, certainly not any flood threat or anything like that. the last comes through around 1:00 in the morning. still incredibly warm out there, generally in the mid 60s, even in the upper 50s in the poconos, and these are records that were set today. this is the old records, one in philadelphia was set in 1881, and look at the

let's get to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. what about the morning rush, glenn, soggy as well? >> it's going to be damp. i think the main issue tomorrow morning is going to be the fog. we're seeing the rain really taper off this afternoon, traffic is moving along. the roads, of course, are still wet, but some places not even getting rain anymore. few hours ago, solid green indicating a large area of rain. it continues to break up, and so we finally ended the streak of 21 straight hours of light rain reported in philly international, but look at this. a large area of rain, tennessee, north carolina, moving up in our direction and that's what's going to be affecting us tomorrow. in the meantime we have to watch the visibilities for the fog. mount pocono, dense fog already, pottstown and wilmington, less than two-mile visibility, and that fog is going to get more and more dense as we go through the night tonight. it's not very chilly out there. it is in the 50s across most of the area, and it's going to stay in the 50s overnight t

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with more on that change in the air. glenn? >> yeah, a bit of a change today and tonight, more significant later in the week, and into the weekend when we're actually going to feel like winter out here. but we certainly haven't the last four days. four days in a row of record high temperatures in philadelphia. the current one occurred just after midnight, 69 degrees beat the old record by three degrees. 55 degrees at philadelphia now, 49 in pottstown and reading. 50s across much of the rest of the area, which, of course, is way above average. we still have some wind gusts, 20 to 25 miles an hour, not nearly as windy as it was just a couple of hours ago. and that wind will continue to diminish as we head through the evening and overnight. it will be cooler than it's been several nights, but nothing exceptional for december. we have some heavy rain and that cold air in the seven day forecast with the timing in just a few minutes. >>> the search for a missing cape may county teenager lead police to a body inside a vacant home toda

. >> nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us now with his first alert forecast, then the latest on the rainy weather. glenn? >> reporter: the rain is finally moving out, but the fog is in, and the cold air is not in yet. so we have fog right now in areas where the rain has stopped. the last of the rain right at the jersey shore. it continues to move out fast. still raining in atlantic city, and that's about the last place that is seeing it. some of the delaware beaches, too. it's moved out rapidly over the last few hours after hanging around all day. the visibility is down to less than a mile at philly international. that could be affecting flights. it's quarter mile in mount pocono, half mile in millville, and until we get the winds to kick up, we can't really see that fog breaking up, but as you saw on the radar, that steady rain is gone. it's rather mild night, areas of fog around and the temperature not changing very much, but it is going down. cold air on the way finally. how cold and for how long with the seven day in a few minutes. >>> we continue to foll

let's go straight to nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, it's really wet out there now, with some areas getting hammered with inches of rain. >> yeah, ted, it's now widespread we're getting that much rain, but the rain itself is widespread. much of the area is being affected, and fortunately there's not a lot of traffic, but the roads with wet and the rain is heavy in parts of the area. look at the live radar here, we've got lots of yellow and even the reds, which indicate the heaviest rain from the philadelphia area, down through northern delaware and into salem and gloucester counties, camden county getting some heavy rain right now. and more back to the west, but it is going to be moving out. as you can see, it's a limited area, but we've had radar estimates of up to three to four inches of rain near smyrna in delaware, over towards vineland in new jersey, and that's why there's a flood advisory for those areas until 7:00. the future weather computer showing that as we go through the next hour or two, that this area of rain gradua

>> nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with that. glenn, i remember in your winter predictions you said it was going to be pretty mild until, what, february? >> yeah, december and january, very mild, and then reverses. we still have a good chance of that happening, so you snow lovers and cold weather lovers don't give up just because we've had this exceptionally mild weather so far. with more to come, of course, this month at least. 62 for the high today, compared to the average of 46. then we go up saturday to 68, sunday to 70. that's almost 25 degrees above normal. 55 degrees in philadelphia now, we're down to 46 in pottstown and millville. 48 degrees in mount holly. so we do have some clear skies now in parts of the area. that's the place that is cooling down, but other clouds, but not any rain coming in from any part of the country. we continue to find the mild weather. it's going to be pretty mild tonight, 53 degrees by 8:00. later on tonight down to about 50 by 11:00, which is higher than the average high for the day, and 7:00
