darcy spencer is more on the latest of what is happening. darcy?st within the last couple minutes, i was able to make contact with a metro spokesperson as well as someone with the d.c. police department. metro is only confirming one of their officers did shoot a suspect out here last night. they referred everything else to d.c. police. d.c. police spokesperson said they are going to get back to me with further information. we were not able to get further information from d.c. police this morning. this shooting happened about 11:00 last night. we're on quarrel street right by the deanwood metro station. just down the street from here is the deanwood recreation center. it looks like the bulk of the police activity taking place behind the rec center. there are road closures out here is this did not happen on metro property. you can see neighborhood streets, as people are going to work this morning, some of the streets are closed. police are telling us they responded about 11:00 for a suspicious situation. they encountered a male with a gun. we do not

let's go to news4's darcy spencer with the details. >> this was a devastating injury. we just heard from new york city police that they are working to find out what materials were used to make that explosive. it's been sent to a lab. results, they say, are expected by the close of business on wednesday. 18-year-old connor golden suffered a traumatic leg injury and jumped off a rock in central park and landed on that material and that's when it exploded. he was taken to the hospital where part of his leg had to be amputated. connor and his friends were in new york for the holiday. authorities say these young men had nothing to do with the explosives and it appears that they had been there for at least a day and it was not connected to terrorism. it's something that could be made. >> what seems likely, at this oi explosive hobbyist. the fascination gross around the fourth of july, for obvious reasons. you can test very small amounts in your home and your lab or where you made it but in order to test a larger amount, you have to go somewhere. that might be your backyard.
