this is the los gatos creek trail. it looks like a rushing river and a bike path is 3 feet under the water. now, the flash flood warning is supposed to expire at 6:30 tonight, but if these conditions persist, it could very well be extended. reporting live in los gatos, ta canne favro, nbc bay area news. >> marianne, thank you. gst's bring in nbc bay area's robert honda reporting from the santa cruz mountains a couple days now. robert, you've seen the mudslides and damage there firsthand. are things getting better or worse at this hour? >> reporter: well, we're here in bolder creek and the people here like many other areas are trying to deal with this constant down poor. some situations you can control, for example, a crew came through here and cleared outs the storm drain, but you can see the water is still backing up pretty quickly. other situations are a little harder to control. the storm has been relentless, causing new damage and making already bad situations even worse. tons of debris including huge fallen trees

abc 7 news reporter vic lee live in los gatos with the story. vic? >> reporter: larry, this is los gatos creek. people here tell us it's normally calm and gentle. but as you can see, this is the epitome of what you call a raging river, thanks to the lexington reservoir. the lexington reservoir peaked at midnight at 104% of capacity. in layperson's terms, that's about a foot and a half above the spillway. so where did all that excess water go? here, to los gatos creek, where it turned into a fast-moving, rising waterway. >> usually it's like a really easy slow bubbling creek and it looks like a class 3 rapid now. >> reporter: from the creek, the water swirled and heaved violently, lapping some 2 feet over. >> it's just amazing. it's something to take in. >> reporter: the sight of the overflow drew long-time los gatos residents like rosie ramos. >> it's like five, ten feet, it's pretty high, the splashing from the dam. >> reporter: tom berkeley has lived here nearly six decades. >> have you ever seen anything like this? >> not even close. >> reporter:

and los gatos hills. in the north bay, you have seen the most rain. it is raining in vallejo, napa, santa rosa, petaluma, mill valley. dry in oakland and san francisco. but, you head further south, it is raining steadily in san jose. in the past ten hours it has been pouring in the santa cruz mountains and will likely continue to do so. wind advisory expires in two hours. we will still see wind gusts 40 to 45 miles an hour over the next few hours. in the santa cruz mountains you have been the bulls eye. already, just over the past 24 hours, more than four inches of rain in boulder creek. in marin county, two inches of rainfall in woodacre. this is the beginning of a wet wintery pattern there. the highest peak ins the syria, four to five feet of snow from this one storm by thursday morning with wind gusts there 70 to 80 miles an hour. this is the weaker of the two storms. we will talk storm number two coming up. >>> it has been snowing like crazy in the sierra. in fact, the first snow survey of the season was today. surveyors trekked through knee deep
