cnn's shimon prokupecz is in uvalde with us. shimon, you've been covering the story from the start.not let up trying to get answers for families. do they have what they need now? have they gotten the answers they wanted? >> no, not yet, sarah. i don't think we're even close to the families having what they wanted. you know, at this hour last year, just a year ago they were inside the school behind me celebrating and it was the last day of school, kids were getting awards. it was a day of celebration, parents were here and they left their kids to continue celebrating the last day. they were all having a good time and in just about an hour their lives would be changed forever. and in many ways things have not gotten better and when you say and ask about do the parents have the answers that they want? no. they're still fighting to this moment for accountability, for answers and trying to understand exactly how this failure, this law enforcement failure here occurred. obviously wanting to know how this individual was able to walk so easily inside this school and kill their kids. so, no,

cnn's shimon prokupecz sat down with some of the families. in many cases, they asked shimon and cnn to show them the moments that their children were evacuated from the classrooms after the gunman had been taken down. they said they needed to see what their children experienced. they hoped it would help them and help others understand what this kind of violence does to children. i want to warn you what we're about to show you, you might find disturbing. >> one in the leg. where does it hurt ? >> look at me. wake up. wake up. look at me. wake up. wake up. >> those are the one who is survived. shimon, what was it like showing these families this footage they have been begging to see that the officials won't let them, that they have never seen before? >> reporter: it was one of the toughest things i have probably ever had to do. certainly as a journalist to have to show this to these families, they asked for it. i hesitated to do it, but eventually, their persistence and them wanting to see this, they felt it was important, so they could know wh

his successor, shimon peres, who was preparing for his election campaign, knew that if taking a reaction against the successive attacks of hezbollah in lebanon nakand will definitely lose in the upcoming elections. this is how, on april 11, 1996, the israeli army launched a large-scale attack from the land, sea and air under the title of the clusters of anger . it lasted for 16 days, and the most severe was in 1982. as a result of this operation, many people in southern lebanon have been displaced, and the largest number of casualties among civilians was the most important.

. >> shimon prokupecz joining me right now. it is so hard to hear of the families' anguish.and express and share what are families asking right now? i mean law enforcement isn't providing the kind of details and footage that you and your teams here at cnn are able to provide. >> right. so one of the things that family members want to know is exactly how their children died that day. because it took law enforcement for so long to enter that classroom, you hear kim rubio there talk about how she's wondering if her daughter suffered and for how long. and if only the police had entered much sooner, her belief is that at least maybe if her daughter died fairly quickly once the gunman started shooting, that she didn't suffer. some sort of solace or hope that maybe her daughter didn't suffer. now, other parents of survivors wanting to know exactly what their kids went through in those 77 minutes, what those kids went through when they were finally rescued and ran out of those rooms, what kind of injuries exactly they suffered and the trauma, the sort of psychological effects of all

later, shimon. >> yeah, coping, i think, feeling a lot of anger, a lot of anxiety.ly members that we featured in our documentary sunday night. they actually came here and dropped off flowers, mia cerrillo, who was one of the girls who called 911, as she's on that bus with the other students who were rescued, some 77 minutes after and they came here to lay flowers. but you can tell that this is really affecting the families today and the survivors. you can just see it, you can just feel it. there were tears in her eyes. and you could, you know, having been around these people for a little while now, there's definitely a different feeling today than there has been any other day that i've certainly seen them. it's just vareally sad to see. i can only imagine the memories this must bring back for many of the survivors and for these families, who a year ago were on the streets here, as police were at this point rescuing their kids or some of these parents finding out that their kids were being brought to a hospital. parents on this day were out here for over an hour awai

shimon, you have a law enforcement sources in texas. what are they telling you?given how much time i spent in texas the last year or so, i think for them, the biggest concerns are the folks trying to get across the border illegally and out there some of these hotspots and sneaking in and getting in and also the other thing, of course, their concern of smugglers. lot of force meant officials say are these cartels that are trying to lower people in into the country and trying to offer people on the u.s. side money to go out and pick them up and bring them in to the country. that is something that the state officials and local sheriffs are all very much concerned about. what happens is, as they say, many at these markets went up on private property, ranchers and hunters who have large acres of property. one of the official says that you have situations where they start knocking on peoples doors in the middle of the night looking for help, want to water, wanting food. it creates a lot of problems and disturbance. the other thing what happens is texas is that there ar

they told shimon they want people to understand what this kind of violence does to kids and hope the reality of this video will lead to change. they also hope police responding to future shootings will learn from this. s shimon prokupiez has been following this bill that has been to be loosening and not tightening the gun laws. >> this came to be because of the families in uvalde, and the gunman buying his ar-15 there days after he turned 18. the families really just have come together to try and get some sort of safety measure, something done in the name of the family members, the kids that they lost. so they have been pushing the house committee members to try and get legislation to the floor that would make it illegal for anyone under 21 to purchase ar-15 rifles in the state of texas. jim, it is an uphill battle, and it does not have the support of the majority of the republicans or the governor. but the family members waited 13 hours to testify before this committee, and finally today in a surprise, and no one was really expecting this, and perhaps the events of over the weekend and this shooting in texas, and maybe this is what finally pushed them to do, this and two republicans actually on the committee voted in favor of this, and so now it has to go to house floor, and again, it is an uphill

shimon prokupecz, thank you for that. jim?ained this photo of what appears to be the gunman on the ground on the left in black with an ar-15-style weapon just nearby as well as several magazines on the gunman's person. the high-powered assault rifle has been the weapon of choice in many of the country's mass shootings. most recently the louisville bank, the covenant school in nashville, tennessee, the walmart in virginia just last fall. a defining characteristic of this kind of weapon is the speed and the power of its bullets. researchers at wayne state university have studied how an ar-15 blast impacts the human body. their findings are terrifying. this is a block of 20% gelatin it's meant to mimic how human flesh reacts to a gunshot. watch as the team fires a handgun round. this is at 1,000 feet per second into the block. relatively straight line. it comes out the opposite side. now watch as the team fires a round from an assault rifle. it explodes inside and remains inside the flesh. again, this mimicking the reactions the
