as fox's claudia cowan reports, while it is getting better in some areas, the fires are growing. in others. this rain has assisted our firefighters in the field and we're glad to have it. after weeks of hot, dry conditions in canada, cooler temperatures and rain showers finally arrived, helping firefighters in the province of nova scotia battled blazes that have already scorched some 25,000 acres. it is the largest wildfire in the province history, forcing thousands of people from their homes over the weekend. crews are working around the clock to extinguish hotspots, but fire officials say a large portion is now contained. the terrible uncertainty of when they can go back to their homes and what awaits them when they get there. but dozens of properties have already been destroyed in what is being described as the worst ever wildfire season in canada. the government is sending in canadian soldiers and firefighters from abroad are also coming to help. but morale is really, really high because they're seeing the fruits of their labor and everybody's kind of on cloud nine right now.

mike: claudia cowan starting us off live. many thanks.ennsylvania state trooper killed and another trooper seriousesly wounded after a shootout in central pennsylvania. the suspect was also killed in the shootout. charles watson is tracking the latest. hello, charles. >> reporter: good afternoon, mike. pennsylvania state police say the department is in mourning after two of its troopers were shot, one of whom was killed in a shootout with an armed suspect saturday afternoon. this whole ordeal plaid out across two separate scenes this pennsylvania in the central portion of the state. pennsylvania police tell us an armed man first engaged troopers in mifflintown, pennsylvania, around 12:45 saturday afternoon. during that initial encounter which was reportedly near a state police bare rack, the armed man allegedly shot one trooper who was rushed to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries. after a manhunt, mike, for the suspect, police located him about two hours later in walker township about 7 miles away in the same county. troopers e

>>> this is cbs news bay area with reed cowan. >> dire numbers in san francisco's drug crisis, even as the city and state promised to crack down on fentanyl. good afternoon, i'm elizabeth cook. we have a new snapshot of the drug crisis in san francisco, specifically deaths from accidental overdoses. anne makovec is here to break it down for us. >> reporter: the report shows 74 people died from accidental overdoses in san francisco just last month, may was one of the deadliest months of the crisis as they started releasing the numbers publicly in 2020. so far this year, the total number of people who have died is 346, that is 40% more than the first five months of 2022, the majority of deaths, 79% involved fentanyl. we are on track to break records for the rest of the year, fentanyl has been a major focus of the drug crackdown involving the governor's office in partnership with chp and the california national guard. they reported that the operation seized more than four grams of fentanyl in the tenderloin and nearby areas over the past four months, that is enough to kill the city's popu
