as for trump, i think he's run hot and cold on mike johnson. he has at times been very supportive of johnson and of the work that johnson has been able to do with a small majority. he has also been quite frustrated with him. i spoke with donald trump the week before christmas when the whole debate was going on about the debt ceiling, and he was very frustrated with johnson, not being able to do that, and trump and his allies made clear that they thought they had assurances, they thought johnson understood that was a priority for trump. there was at least in that moment, looked like trump might have turned on johnson . he worked diligently to maintain the relationship to get back to a place where trump would reaffirm his support for him. stylistically, they could not be more different. a lifelong republican from deep south louisiana, a very religious man, the other donald trump, a one-time democrat and new york city playboy. they are very different. they have chosen to work together, and now they're on this ride together. >> they are. let's take

manu, a critical vote for speaker mike johnson.e is facing an uphill battle today to see whether or not he can get the votes to remain the speaker. where do things stand right now? >> yeah, look, there's virtually no margin for error because of the narrowness of this house republican majority. mike johnson, for the last several weeks, and particularly over the last day, has been having a flurry of conversations with a number of republican holdouts, people who want him to make certain commitments, some demands to cut federal spending and the like, and also to give them more power in the legislative process. but johnson has been absolutely defiant, saying that he will not cut deals. he says that it is time to get behind his speaker, to try to move ahead with trump's agenda, trying to highlight the fact that donald trump did come out in support of him and saying that supporting him now would are opposing him now, would undercut their ability to move ahead in the single party rule in washington. and just moments ago, mike johnson made

speaker mike johnson has been having phone calls. he has been having meetings with some of these holdouts, and some of them are insisting on some changes. structurally, they want promises about how johnson's going to handle future spending bills. they want promises that he'll include spending cuts in some of those negotiations, and they also just want some other promises that johnson is going to bring members into the fold sooner when he's negotiating big pieces of legislation. think that tax bill that has to pass in the next 12 months, those are the kinds of things that some of these republican holdouts are asking for. but right now, we're looking at about ten republicans who have either not committed to johnson or say that they want other commitments from mike johnson. that is a difficult way to head into a day that you're hoping to clinch the speaker's gavel again. here are some of the comments we're hearing from holdouts and johnson allies. >> i do believe that mike johnson coming out and committing to chip roy being the chairman

until about a week ago, it seemed like an open question whether or not mike johnson would be able to remain speaker of the house just before congress left washington for the holidays. president-elect trump and his copresident, elon musk, whipped hard-line republicans and will revolt against johnson's plan to fund the government in the new year. forcing democrats to bail mike johnson out at the last minute. but then, earlier this week, donald trump endorsed mike johnson to be speaker of the house, and last night, just ahead of today's vote, johnson demonstrated his fealty to trump by promising to follow through on one of trump's biggest priorities in the new congress to rewrite history about january 6th. you see, since taking back the house in 2023, republicans have already wasted time and resources trying to discredit the january 6th committees investigation into trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. trump wants them to try to continue discrediting that investigation, even though he just won the last election. and mike johnson has now made it clear that he is happy to go alon

that is a huge endorsement that speaker mike johnson has that he definitely needed going into today. >> we have heard from paul gosar and eli crane, both republicans of arizona, both saying they will be supporting speaker johnson. what would be the purpose, do you think, of a no vote on the first round? >> it was certainly garner a lot of attention not only from the media who are watching this, very closely. from reporters who of course want to know why a lawmaker voted no, but also from the leadership themselves because that would mean a conversation, right? it would mean that they would huddle and talk about why that lawmaker said no and what it would take for them to go to yes. that is why these lawmakers are now saying openly a lot of these members on the house freedom caucus conservatives saying that they have not said whether they would support johnson on the floor because they want oaks conversations, they want to be able to say, i would like to be able to see on this committee in exchange for a yes vote or to be able to have a guarantee that my bill will see more time. those a

and neither does mike johnson. t, you know, our thing is -- my main points were what mike knew, has known all along. i don't think he understood the opposition that was before him. you know, you saw the ones that just did not vote. or were quiet when the vote came around. but i think now he understand yous the fact that votes where you rely on more democrat votes than republicans, that's what's killing the country. if we're going to do the same thing over and over again as we've done the past 14 month, we're going to be in the same position. i'm just not willing to go along with that. and i didn't. mike gave me the assurance that he was going to. >> what do you say, sir, to your colleagues who -- you know, i hear from republicans that the gop is good at getting its own way. what is your response to that? >> that who's getting their open way sfl. >> republicans getting their own way. >> no. republicans are free thinkers. i mean, what's an additional hour into the general assembly where we debated this? what's wrong w

and all ended up voting for mike johnson. what is the strategy? > seven did not respond when their name was called, chose not to vote. there were a couple possibilities here. one, they just didn't want to vote for johnson, didn't want to vote or anybody else. they didn't care if that meant that johnson would be speaker or not. the other thing is they were doing it to make a point. you need our votes to be elected speaker. we will eventually vote for you but we are making you sweat a little bit, showing you that we matter as this 119 congress proceeds. as it turns out, they ended up voting for johnson because you had three that voted for other candidates. >> massey, norman, self. at this point, what do you expect to happen? >> well, this is where the process of negotiation comes in, just as we saw two years ago when kevin mccarthy was unable to get an absolute majority running for speaker in january 2023, the question is whether those discussions are happening now, or if they will happen at a later point. it kind of depends on politics in the moment

but i knew we needed to make and elect. >> make no mistake, this was a shot across the bow for mike johnson and donald trump. johnson issued a list of commitments that included creating a working group to work with elon musk's pet project, doge. and to ask house committees to do appropriations reviews. donald trump did not fill republican brains with fever groups and financial reports. after today's speaker vote, the 11 members of the house freedom caucus issued a list of demands of their own for johnson. saying that they voted for him so despite their quote of his sincere track record over the last months. more proof that they are not feeling especially confident, the republican controlled house voted on a new rules package that included increasing the threshold that allowed just one member to initiate a vote to remove a speaker. speaker johnson, i think it is safe to say he passed the first test. but it is possible that this is quite possibly the easiest vote he will have to wrangle boats for. the debt limit which is scheduled, it was the unrest that started the whole issue last month is

brandon, let's start with you with mike johnson. this was obviously dramatic, made a lot of headlines, but at the end of the day donald trump has one priority, to be sworn in as the next president of the united states of america. did anyone really think that there was a single republican elected official that was going to stand in the way and block mike johnson and delay donald trump? >> yeah, there were enough republicans who thought they could maybe get some attention for themselves, maybe have a little weekend where they keep everybody in session, but there were only three people at the end of the day who voted against him, it was very clear, i guess before they switched their votes it was very clear that mike johnson was going to be speaker of the house again. when kevin mccarthy lost his vote, he lost 19 people, a lot more than a lot of folks expected and that ultimately rose to 20. these folks are on an island very quickly and there was intense pressure going to come down not just from donald trump but the rest of their collea

thomas massie has been clear for weeks that he was not going to vote for mike johnson. i don't think there's anything he wants. i don't think there's anything johnson can give him. he's the immovable object here, if you will. ralph norman, i think is a is a bit of a mystery here. he's aligned with the house freedom caucus.e's a anti-spending guy. he's been engaged in meetings and conversations with the speaker as recently as yesterday afternoon. i think if there's anyone who mike johnson knows what he wants, it's probably ralph norman. keith's self is a little bit of an x factor. he's a newer member up here. he's not as outspoken. it's not as clear to me what it is that he would want to be moved. the other possibility, kate, here, is that these members, either collectively or individually, wanted to make a point that perhaps they will support johnson on another ballot. but can voting against him, at least on this first ballot, could serve as a reminder how tenuous his majority is and how he is going to have to listen to and perhaps acquiesce to some of these far right me
