lead house speaker mike johnson will remain house speaker mike johnson. he kept the gavel today after a dramatic vote. he was initially on track to lose in the first ballot. that is, until two holdout republicans changed their no votes to johnson votes at the last minute. shortly after johnson's victory, republican congressman mike lawler of new york posted on x congratulations to speaker johnson. it's time to get to work on behalf of the american people. and that congressman lawler joins us now. congressman, happy new year. so you were always in support of johnson. what was going on behind the scenes? you had six people refusing to vote. then they voted for johnson, three people voting against him, then two of them flipping their votes. did you talk to any of them throughout the last few days? >> certainly. >> but look, jake, it's the theater of the absurd. but i'm glad, obviously, that we were able to get this done in one round on one day and get mike johnson elected speaker so that we can actually get to work. >> there is so much to do on behalf of the

brandon, let's start with you with mike johnson. this was obviously dramatic, made a lot of headlines, but at the end of the day donald trump has one priority, to be sworn in as the next president of the united states of america. did anyone really think that there was a single republican elected official that was going to stand in the way and block mike johnson and delay donald trump? >> yeah, there were enough republicans who thought they could maybe get some attention for themselves, maybe have a little weekend where they keep everybody in session, but there were only three people at the end of the day who voted against him, it was very clear, i guess before they switched their votes it was very clear that mike johnson was going to be speaker of the house again. when kevin mccarthy lost his vote, he lost 19 people, a lot more than a lot of folks expected and that ultimately rose to 20. these folks are on an island very quickly and there was intense pressure going to come down not just from donald trump but the rest of their collea

thomas massie has been clear for weeks that he was not going to vote for mike johnson. i don't think there's anything he wants. i don't think there's anything johnson can give him. he's the immovable object here, if you will. ralph norman, i think is a is a bit of a mystery here. he's aligned with the house freedom caucus.e's a anti-spending guy. he's been engaged in meetings and conversations with the speaker as recently as yesterday afternoon. i think if there's anyone who mike johnson knows what he wants, it's probably ralph norman. keith's self is a little bit of an x factor. he's a newer member up here. he's not as outspoken. it's not as clear to me what it is that he would want to be moved. the other possibility, kate, here, is that these members, either collectively or individually, wanted to make a point that perhaps they will support johnson on another ballot. but can voting against him, at least on this first ballot, could serve as a reminder how tenuous his majority is and how he is going to have to listen to and perhaps acquiesce to some of these far right me

i think mike johnson is in a pickle. if he had pushed forward as negotiated he would be in a position to say if i have a problem, can you help me out? but he is not in that position now. >> congresswoman jasmine crockett. thank you for joining us. she is from texas. i want to bring in brandon buck. good to see you again. this is tricky, because even if mike johnson becomes speaker tomorrow, there is a problem, once you are a speaker with that many threats or defacters what you are able to do as speaker is limited. >> there is not even the promises they have to make, but the realities of governing that makes it very difficult. you have to fund the government and the debt limit and republicans have shown they are not able to do that on their own so every time you have to go over and work with democrats. they can blame the speaker all they want. all day long you can blame the speaker but unless there are 218 republicans willing to vote for something that can get through the united states senate, you will not advance any pri

i personally like mike johnson. him fundamentally on issues like ukraine but his personality, when interviewing members who voted for him his personality, donald trump mentioned it, he is a good man. you can disagree with him as i do on ukraine and that funding but he is a good person. a lot of the members said he has never said a bad thing about anybody. he is a kind, truly christian man and i think that also helped him in this as well. guy: he doesn't make enemies. he is absolutely a good guy but it benefits him. it is how he became speaker because of that personality he has. i agree with a mostly on ukraine, disagree with them on other issues but that doesn't matter, they have to play as a team and i do think the fact that he didn't make a bunch of promises and concessions in exchange for votes, we are not doing a quid pro quo, you will vote for me or not vote for me, i know from that promise individual numbers specific things to get them to vote for for me ultimate the people respected that rather than goodies b
