santa cruz mountains right now in a little bit kind of working its way through the north bay and parts of the east bay, too, that are just kind of hit or miss showers that are kind of rolling through right now. so just to show you that the clouds are out there, we still have that chance of a shower as we look across. you really don't see any spot that's completely in the sunshine and that will be the case until we get into tomorrow afternoon. basically right now, temperatures at 70 degrees in san jose, but we're in the 60's across most of the bay area. 66 in alameda, 70 right now, though, in concord. 71 in fairfield. 65 in petaluma pacifica about 63 degrees. so we're a little bit below average as we look through the next day or so. you can see this is tonight. so still unsettled. have the chance of showers are going wake up tomorrow morning. and most of this now will stay offshore. but we still have that slight chance until we get into the afternoon. and then we finally get some clearing and we start to get some nice sunshine in things will stay that way on wednesday. but by thursday, some clouds moving in as the next front takes shape. and

bay area tech companies like google and next door announced layoffs. we've seen a lot of this type of restructuring and cost-cutting over the past year and a half or so. but most bay area, conner miss, we talked to say they're still bullish about the sector saying things seem to be improving. kron four's dan kerman reports. another week. another round of tech layoffs this week. it's google and next door, which is reducing its workforce. 25 1% by laying off. >> 200 employees. still the website layoffs, fy. i shows tech layoffs have been on a steady decline since they peaked in january of this year. tech employment. >> up. from before the pandemic. and nearly a jobs. we're only a few 1000 below the peak. all of the layoffs of happened. but level of tech employment is down only a 20 event. >> steven levy is the director and senior economist at the center for continuing study of the california economy. he says new jobs in ai clean energy and electric vehicles are allowing many of those laid off to find new work. but he still has some concerns. >> i'm much more worried. about the return to working in the office that i am about the tech layoffs. levy says that's impacted small businesses

of the funding distributing among bay area transit agencies. >>> we are tracking the rain with our first alert chief meteorologist. where is the rain right now? >> we seen some hit or miss showers so far today, the bulk of the steadiest and heaviest rain has been falling over the ocean. the difference that a little wobble makes. this system has been spinning off the coast over the last few days. all of this heavy rain would just be soaking the entire bay area. the heavy rain toward the west trends closer to the coast looking toward the south. this rain toward the south would be going in our direction as we go through the next few hours. the fact that we got there the day mostly dry so far does not mean this will continue through the afternoon and evening commutes is rain becomes likely through the next few hours. when talking about enough to cause significant flooding problems but there could be some standing water on the side of the road with high water problems. the batch of rain lifting toward the north and dissipates with off and on showers throughout the rest of the night and likely into tomorrow morning. it's kind of an everyday other day pattern. we have off and

of the south bay or the santa cruz mountains before drier conditions. on thursday, we'll see another round of rain, but this one also very hit or miss.n fact, maybe not everyone will see that chance of rain. we are going to go back to a little bit of a break from the wet weather on friday. so, with two systems coming in between now and friday, we may only see about a tenth to a quarter inch of rain, and the farther inland you go, the lower the rainfall totals will most likely be. for the coastal areas as well as in parts of the north bay and some of our hills, could be closer to a half inch of rain. so, we are going to see a fairly active weather pattern here, but much of the rain stays to the north of us. as we go into the weekend, by saturday afternoon, there is the atmospheric river to our north. we'll see the if there's a change in the direction as well as the time line of that storm. for the sierra, we desperately need snow, but it looks light, about 2 to 7 inches of snow for the weekend. our temperatures stay cool. highs only in the low 60s in the next few days. >> held my breath for a second with that atmospheric river. >>> ha

. >> as someone who grew up in the south bay, i can tell you that there was a collective sense of regret at having missed the train initially when the bart system opened in 1972. when it finally arrived in santa clara county, it was supposed to be epic. it was supposed to be momentous. but push those adjectives aside, because the unvarnished truth of what it has been so far, has been a bit underwhelming. the riders have not come. i can hear the arguments for the folks that are bullish about this project. it opened in the middle of a pandemic. it is not finished. the worst grade they could give it so far is incomplete. while all of that is indisputably true, the risk of leaning too far into the mantra of building -- and they will come -- you risk falling on your face. tonight's story is about the potential price of getting it wrong. >> i like the convenience factor of the train. i am able to get from point a to point b without driving. >> since moving to the bay area, austin cop and has lived in san francisco but worked in the south bay, commuting. >> i always wanted to live in san francisco. the bar to g

potential for showers to the north to try to make a run down across parts of the bay area, but the showers are going to be much more miss than hit. we're talking about a 10% to 20% rain chance over the next several days. that will persist through friday and again on saturday, where most of us will see a mix of clouds and sunshine that you may want to stash that to be on the safe side. but as we finish friday and head into friday night and the weekend, it looks like the majority will be up to the north and some of that falling in the sierra in the form of snow, which is good news for the resorts. we are talking about a better chance for rain beyond the scope of the seven-day forecast and that 10% to 20% chance over the weekend with completely dry weather on sunday, monday, tuesday, likely wednesday as well. i think maybe thursday into thursday night of next week will represent the next decent chance of showers headed our way and that's a long way down the line. looking outside another view of the beautiful sunset from the mark hopkins hotel. current temperatures are dropping down in the mid to upper 50s as we managed to

by early afternoon the best chance of showers is far north in the north bay, a couple hit-or-miss sprinklesnorth bay showers take a break tomorrow evening. every time it wobbles farther west it drags the rain with it. you see that backing away from the coast heading through tomorrow night and early wednesday another wave of rain takes shape and heads towards us by the time the sun goes down wednesday. wednesday night into thursday might had be the time frame we have the most widespread and heaviest rain across the bay area. that's still something that's about 48 plus hours in advance. with this type of weather pattern it's really hard to predict things that far in advance. adding up the rain over the next several days, this is an estimate from the forecast models, but fairly reasonable, one showing a half inch to an inch. it would be enough to have a nice impact on the amount of moisture. farther south, much lighter amounts estimated, some spots barely a total rainfall. we're not done at 10:00 a.m. thursday. rain chances will continue into friday and saturday, more of the off-and-on shower
