with rip currents, when the water is coming into the beach, more water coming into the beach has to make its way back out, it is a current, and it is a current of water meefing on the beach. it is like being in a treadmill. just like on a treadmill, you wear out and you can't go backwards. that's what happens with a rip current, the person gets too tired to stay above water. but anything like the white foam is breaking out. if you have wave action, the wave action may be knocked down in that spot. so it looks different than the surrounding water. >> what would be the best advice to someone who has found themselves caught in one of these situations ? what should they do? >> don't panic. if can swim, you can survive it. if you can swim, even if it pulls you to deeper water, you can keep your head above water. if you let it take you out, it dissipates once it gets past the sandbar which is the mechanism that causes it, and then you can go with the north or south current and then swim out of it. if you find yourself in it and you want to make an immediate decision, you can swim parallel to s

red flags are already up in virginia beach. hurricane bill is picking up waves along east coast beaches and we can expect some rough surf over the weekend. our meteorologist kim martucci has been watching him closely and she now has the latest on this storm. good news about bill. while it is a category three storm, as you said, since the last observation this morning it lost ten miles an hour to its punch. instead of winds of 125. it has winds of 115 miles an hour. something to reckon with. it is not near land or islands at the moment. and it looks like with a little luck the track of bill will stay west of bermuda and east of north america until we think of atlantic canada and the timing of that would be toward the end of the weekend. how's bill going to impact us? mainly in the form of our local beach goers to ocean city. as you possession mentioned rip tides and rough surf a big concern if you are heading to the coast and we will talk about that. i want to show you doppler 9000. as forecasted the thunderstorms are developing

a wonderful day at the beach. humidity only 39% with a north early breeze coming down the beach. and all around our region, we've had the humidity dropping out of the mountains, it's just in the 60s right now. and down in southeastern virginia where it's been so steamy the last couple of week, it has dried out there, as well. so quite a break from the humidity as the dew points there now are in the mid-60s while it's just in the 50s farther to the west and north. it has certainly changed dramatically since yesterday. we've had just a few 6 these high clouds drifting through over the last couple hours and we'll have lots of sunshine hend this as we've got a large area of high pressure now sittingoff the ohio valley. this high pressure will drift right over us here today and the western flow around that high will unfortunately take this humidity away and begin to bring in the heat. we've got a warm front now building throughout the central plains. so to for us for the afternoon, mostly sunny with low humidity and high ultraviolet index. temperatures climbing into the low and mid-80
