bob redell. bob, from what we understand, this family was really saved by their fire alarm. >> they were. that's what the san jose fire department is saying. check your batteries and make sure you have a fire alarm because that's why that house right there does not have anyone inside. everyone got out okay. a smoke alarm that saved the family of nine. they were asleep upstairs in that home here on moorings caught when it caught fire downstairs in the garage. you can see the fire department right now doing some clearance pps wh when the alarm woke this family, black smoke was filling the upstairs. you can see in this video provided by the san jose fire department how lucky they were they got out. as you can see the fire engulfed the structure and the two-story home. without the alarm, this family would have been stuck in there. the fire overwhelmed the two-story home and ended up destroying the home. the fire department had a call for a second alarm bringing in more units to keep this from spreadin

nbc bay area's bob redell is live in san jose, where investigators have been digging since 9:00 this morning. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you there, laura. and the san jose fire department just telling us they have yet to find any human remains here at the old kntv studios on park avenue. this is in spite of the fact that a third cadaver dog has indicated the possible presence of bone, tissue, or blood. you're looking at that dog, a black and white dog, named piper, sitting down and indicating on at least two different locations this morning, one by the back entrance to our old newsroom, the other by a pillar in the middle of the old newsroom. what's interesting about that second location, that's roughly the same spot two other cadaver dogs indicated yesterday. firefighters photographed the area this morning, removed the debris from that location, sifted down to the foundation, and found no human remains. same with the other location by the back entrance. nothing. >> is it possible the remains are incinerated or is it possible you have three dogs giving false posit

nbc bay area's bob redell is live in san jose with the highlights from the auditor's annual report. what are they telling us, bob? >> reporter: good morning, peggy. in its year end report for 2013, the independent police auditor based here in downtown san jose is issuing 15 recommendations for the san jose police department. and for the first time ever, is recommending that officers be fired if and when they lie to internal affairs. they say this is simply an integrity issue. there were two instances last year in which officers lied and they ended up just being suspended. most other cities would have fired them, the auditor points out. another recommendation, the field officer training handbook, to educate officers on thousand to better interact with minorities. require officers to undergo crisis intervention training, to make them better in dealing with people who have a mental il illness. and restrict the number of ride loo alongs. one officer took a woman along with him ten times one night. the report also outlines 28 complaints against officers that were sustained. in other words

nbc bay area's bob redell live outside mineta international in san jose, where the boy reportedly hopped the fence. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, laura and scott. and after that 15-year-old teenager from santa clara hopped the fence here at early sunday, he apparently stayed on airport property for several hours going undetected by airport personnel. these images appear to be his footprints where he stepped on the aircraft tire climbing up into the wheel well. a second image shows numerous foot and handprints inside the wheel well door. these photos obtained by our sister station out of honolulu, not independently verified by nbc news. it's not clear if he hid in the wheel well in the hours leading up to the sunday flight or if he was elsewhere on the airport ramp. if he was inside the boeing 767 wheel well, why wasn't he spotted during any of the pre-flight inspections. the airport says its video cameras captured what they believe was the boy wandering on the ramp, but no one was monitoring the feed at time to a alert security. the tsa will wait for the airport to finish it

"today in the bay" bob redell is at the scene. there was quite the set up insi inside the building. >> these people who were transients, possibly as many as 30 really made themselves home inside this vacant building which was our old tv studio. fire department told us they pulled out barbecue grill, moijs, quite an eelaborate cisep inside the building when it caught fire. based on interviews, the fire department does believe everybody got out okay. once the sun comes up firefighters will go in and do a search. they're in there right now making sure nothing flares back up. a very large fire and required a lot of backup to fight. the fire department called for a fifth alarm and they needed so much water they had to call the water company to increase the pressure. >> one part where it there was this pressure that came out of the building and it just turned into this little tornado and it was rushing towards everyone that was standing on the block and just moved them out because the debris was so sharp. it was like cutting you. >> thi

nbc bay area's bob redell joining us live from the newsroom with that part of the story. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, peggy. i've also been monitoring that news coerence. the latest to come out of the news conference with chp is to say, yes, the ntsb has joined this investigation. it could be a good three months before they get a better idea of what led up to this crash, when that fedex big rig crossed over the grass median and collided with that tour bus. trying to figure out if a fedex driver perhaps fell asleep, if there was a mechanical issue, right now they do not know what led up to that crash that killed ten people. sacramento county coroner's office just identifying one of those people who was killed in yesterday's horrific collision. arthur arzola was a recruiter for the school. he lived in rancho cucamonga. he was escorting the students for a visit to the campus when he died in that crash yesterday. he was 26 years old. the crash also killed both drivers, two other chaperones, and five students from los angeles area high schools. >> reporter: the ag

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live with the very latest on the search now for survivors. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, laura. hundreds of passengers might have been doomed by the operator of the farrier who told people to stay put, trapping them inside this ship. one of the rescuers in south korea now says there's little chance that those people could still be alive. divers is not recovered anyone since the vessel sank. their search inside the wreckage made difficult by poor visibility. so far, four people are confirmed dead. more than 280 passengers, many of whom are teenagers, are missing, while 174 people, some of them you can see right there, have been rescued in what could end up being south korea's worst maritime disaster in 20 years. this was supposed to be safe passage for 459 people, en route to an island known as south korea's hawaii. many of them high school students on a field trip. but wednesday morning, local, passengers heard a loud bang. their 480-foot long ferry lost control and started listing at this awful angle. there was confusion. this st
