. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at america's best value inn in hayward. bob, i know you continue to ask those questions out there. what else have you been able to find out and who have you been able to talk to? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and kris. i've talked to a number of people staying at the hotel overnight when the fire started around 4:00 and a couple people mentioned hearing this window that blew out from the second floor room there, that room is where the fire started. as you can see a hayward fire investigator is in there trying to figure out the cause. we've spoken with the fire chief and he says there does not appear to be anything suspicious about the fire. they have spoken to the man and woman who were staying in the room. they're apparently cooperating so it's not clear what started it. it does not appear to be suspicious. that fire did start in the second floor unit. take a look at this video shot by a hotel guest's cell phone video. you can see how the flames are pushing out of this building. burst up to the third floor destro

. >> bob redell with a warning that's going out to students. bob? >> reporter: laura and marcus, this warning came in the form of an e-mail from the police chief. sending this out to students. basically he's looking for any other witnesses or perhaps survivors of this alleged sexual assault. a few cases that took place here on campus. the police chief did identify the suspect. his name is luis. he's 21 years old. a fourth year student who lives on campus. this according to the e-mail from the police chief. an investigation revealed there were two more victims. he was arrested two days later. he now faces charges of sexual assault, assault with the intent to commit sex crimes, false imprisonment and sexual battery. police say all three assaults took place in cva and the suspect and victims knew each other. we checked online this morning. records indicate he is still in jail and scheduled to appear in court later this morning. we also checked in with the u.s. department of education this morning looking at their online records to get a sense of how se

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san mateo county sheriff's office in redwood city and what we know about those inmates. bob, how long have they been missing at this point? >> reporter: not quite 12 hours yet. we just spoke -- or just heard from the san mateo county sheriff's office, marcus, within the past 30 to 45 minutes, they tell us that these two inmates are walk a ways, they walked away from the camp around 9:45 last night. once the sun comes up the sheriff's office will conduct a much broader search. the one thing they did note overnight is that they do not consider these two people to be armed and dangerous. take a look at the map we put together for you. it's called the glenwood camp correctional facility, it's located along log cabin ranch road in la honda, an area that's mountainous and rugged. accord to it's website of the san mateo office of education runs the camp, describes it as a minimum security residential facility for boys who function below grade level in school because they are not always attending class and lack the necessary skills. the sheriff's off

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live at chp headquarters in castro valley. bob, do we know what led up to the shootings? >> reporter: marcus, in one of the instances we know it was road rage, within the past several hours chp has made an arrest in that shooting. you take a look at this map we put together you can see one of the shootings took place as you mentioned last night in oakland, this was on 580, the other in marin county on westbound 580. this is once you get over the richmond-san rafael bridge near the exit for san quentin. chp says that they have captured a shooter in the marin incident. what officers say was a case of road rage involving a bb gun. according to law enforcement the suspect was in a mustang when he cut off another driver a little bit after 5:30 last night. the driver that was cut off honked their horn. the suspect allegedly pulled alongside the car, fired what appeared to be a handgun and then took off. police arrested the 18-year-old driver of the mustang three and a half hours later. they discovered a bb gun and found a dent consis

"today in the bay's" bob redell is there now to explain for us what happened. bob, this had to be a frightening situation for not only officers but anyone on the road as well. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. one of the off ramps off of eastbound highway 4 is shut down, it's the off ramp that connects the port chicago highway, again, because as you mentioned because of a chase happened around 3:45 this morning. we know concord police was chasing a driver in this area when the driver of that vehicle crashed, overturned and according to chp that driver did get away and last report the officers, law enforcement, are still looking for this person in this area. that's why you still have this exit 15-b eastbound highway 4 to port chicago highway still shut down. you've also got northbound 242 that off ramp to the port chicago highway also shut down. the good thing is both of those off ramps are in the reverse commute direction so they are not having any impact on people's drive to work this morning, but again, it is an active area as law enforcement is still trying

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at san jose police headquarters with what we know about this bizarre story, bob. >> reporter: good morning. san jose police have arrested this man who allegedly threw a rock at this lady who we believe works for the valley transportation authority. you can take a look at this video. in this video you can see officers escorting this woman away as she's keeping pressure on her head wound. you should also be able to see this is the rock that the man threw at her and there's also droplets of blood sprinkled around the ground around it. looks like a large river rock, the kind that was used in landscaping. this is the man who officers took into custody. you can see he is handcuffed and being walked away. this happened around 9:30 last night. this is on second and julian here in san jose. the woman who we believe is a vta supervisor was driving when the man threw a rock at her marked vta van. when she got out to check for damage he threw that large rock and hit her in the head. last report she was in stable condition. the suspect did try to run aw

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live at san jose state with what authorities are now saying about the series of attacks inside dorms there. bob? >> reporter: kris, court police records indicate that the suspect 21-year-old chemical engineering student goes by the name of luis ranegas tried to sexual assault one man on campus by putting him in a choke hold and allegedly sexual assaulted another man also on campus when he was, quote, blackout drunk. this reporting by the mercury news. vanega seen in court last week in san jose faces five felony charges related to alleged attacks on two men here at san jose state. san jose state police arrested vanegas on march 5th after they say he made advances on a friend two days before. according to the meshirc the ma resisted. vanegas allegedly performed sex acts on another friend, this is in 2014 and 2015 when that friend was passed out drunk. the merc reports the victim became suicidal after vanegas told him about the incident. vanegas remains at the elmwood men's jail in milpitas on $210,000 bond. san jose state police believe that there coul

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell has been live at chp headquarters gathering new information overnight. now, we're learning more about how officers made this big discovery, right, bob? >> reporter: we are. good morning to you, laura and scott. this started as a traffic stop over the weekend, chp officers from this location tried to pull over a driver of a honda crv, this is early sunday morning, there was a short pursuit before officers were eventually able to arrest this man. his name is jeremy guy and inside his vehicle officers say they found ingredients to use to make explosives. flash forward to yesterday, over 24 hours later, chp obtained a search warrant to search the hotel room that guy shared with his father. this was the scene last night over that hotel, it's the homewood suites on the 1700 block of the embarcadero in oakland where officers evacuated part of the hotel for a few hours while they searched that room. it's not clear what if anything law enforcement found inside that room, but we do know that they arrested the father as well. his name is ronald guy. both he and hi

. >> bob redell is live at san jose police headquarters. this doesn't sound like it was just an accident. >> reporter: no, definitely intentional. that's what san jose police have indicated by arresting this man who threw a rock at this woman who we believe works at the valley transportation authority. as you can see in this video from overnight officers escorted this woman away from the scene to an ambulance as she kept pressure on her head wound. take a look at the rock that this man threw at her. it looks like a large river rock, the kind that's used in landscaping. what you can't see in the radio are the droplets of blood on the ground around it. you can see officers leading him away from the scene in handcuffs. this happened around 9:30 on second and julian in san jose. the woman who we were was a vta supervisor was driving when the man threw at rock at her van. when she got out to look for damage he threw another rock and hit her in the head. the suspect did try to run away but police did catch him. it's not clear what led up to the a

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of san mateo county sheriff's office. this in redwood city with what we know about those inmates. bob, how long have they been missing? >> reporter: marcus, it wasn't even been 12 hours yet. the san mateo county sheriff's office indicates that the two young men left the facility, they are considered to be, quote, walk a ways, this is around 9:45 last night. we did reach out to the sheriff's office overnight but they have refused to give us an update on the search for these two young men. we put this map together for you so you can get a sense of where this camp is located. it's called the glenwood camp correctional facility, located along log cabin ranch road in la honda up in the hills. it's an area that's mountainous and rugged. the san mateo county office of education runs the camp. it's described as a minimum security residential facility for boys who function below grade level in school because they are not always attending class and that they lack the necessary skills. now, here is the description that the sheriff's

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live at chp headquarters in castro valley in morning to explain how chp officers came across those guys in the first place. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the chp tells us this started with a traffic stop over the weekend. officers from this location here in castro valley were trying to pull over the driver of a honda crv, this was early sunday morning. the driver would not comply, there was a short pursuit, officers were eventually able to catch him and arrest him. this man's name is jeremy guy and inside his vehicle officers say that they found the ingredients to make explosives. flash forward to yesterday, 24 hours later the officers obtained a search warrant to search the hotel room that guy shared with his father. this was the scene last night over that hotel. it was the homewood suites on the 1700 block of the embarcadero in oakland where officers evacuated part of that hotel for a few hours while they searched that room. it's not clear what, if anything, they found inside, but we do know that they arrested the father as well, his
