brian flores joins us live with more on the meeting. gch, brian. >> reporter: good afternoon.he mayor and along with chief joanne hayes-white met with firefighters. they agree that the living conditions right now for these firefighters here on t.i. is not ideal. the mayor says getting the firefighters a legit fire station is a top priority. now, our ktvu camera was there when mayor ed lee toured the makeshift living conditions for the 11 firefighters here on t.i. you will recall back in march, the crew was evacuated from station 48 because of severe mold found inside the building. since then, these firefighters have been living at a training facility a few blocks down the street from station 48 where they've converted three classrooms into living quarters and the fire trucks sit outside uncovered from the elements. the goal, to put up the firefighters in a more long- term but temporary stable modular fire station that can last for ten years until the redevelopment of the island can allow for a more permanent fire station. the firefighter we spoke to said this brought up more m

and brian flores joins us live from the most recent incident that claimed the life of a man on sloat boulevard. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: we spoke to the family of the man who has lived in this neighborhood for more than 50 years. he was hit and killed by a driver this morning, crossing the street on 43rd and sloat right across the street from the san francisco zoo. now, the san francisco medical examiner's office has identified the man who was hit and killed at 87-year-old lewis van velden. his family said he was crossing the street trying to catch the bus like he's been doing for years. when before 7:00 this morning, he was hit by a driver. that driver stopped and is cooperating with police. but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. police say it was not raining at the time. that was not a factor. but they are looking at other factors like how dark it may have been. >> we think she was probably doing the speed limit. we think the factor was the light. it was around dusk. it was just getting daylight and down by the beach, sometimes it can be a little darker just becaus

brian flores has been at the scene all morning and joins us with more information. good afternoon. >> reporter: hi, good afternoon. police opened up this block of the -- the 500 block of natomaa and 7th a few hours as they completed the initial part of this investigation. one person is dead. another person is cinging to her life -- clinging to her life. this all happened after 5:00 in the apartment unit off natoma police responded after several residents heard gunshots coming from the apartment. san francisco police say the adult man and his female companion got into a confrontation. the man pulled out a gun, shot the woman in the upper body and turned the gun on himself. when police arrived, the man who has yet to be identified was dead and the woman was clinging to her life. she was taken to the hospital. at last check, she was life- threatening injuries. >> it appears that we have two shooting victims. we have a female victim that was shot in the upper body. transported to san francisco general hospital. she has life-threatening injuries. the male is the suspect.

brian flores explains the struggles firefighters faced in putting this out. >> reporter: this bright orange glow could be seen for miles early in the morning as several pallets, old cars, equipment and part of a barn went up in flames. >> when we arrived at scene, there were several thousand pallets on fire and the barn was -- the large barn behind mean was immediately threatened. >> reporter: the fire started just before 5:00 this morning on what is described as a pallet yard and ranch. on the 2700 block of ferguson road in gill roye. several fire crews were called in from san jose, south santa clara, gilroy, morgan hill and even as far as hollister to battle the blaze. >> the cause is under investigation. we've got our fire personnel at scene right now. we've got a mix of agriculture and residential uses at this property so just because of the size of the fire, the investigation is will take quite some time. >> reporter: the flames reached 200 feet high according to firefighters. about 10,000 square feet burned. about 10 to 20 people who lived at a residential unit were vacketted.
