tj english has a new book about bulger titled where the where the bodies were buried: whitey bulger andd that made him." good morning. >> good morning. >> you saw this film last night. what did you think. >> two things. you can analyze it as entertainment or as some accurate depiction of the bulger story. i think as entertainment it is a good story. people will find it compelling and interesting. as the picture of the bulger story i think it skims the surface. the bulger story is a very complicated story. maybe too complicated for a two hour movie. and i found the movie to be rather superficial in that regard. >> what what was the biggest detail you think it misses? >> the biggest detail about bulger is that corrupt relationship he had with the fbi and the criminal justice system. was a series of relationships that were in existence in the new england jurisdiction before whitey bulger even came on the scene. that this was a tradition of law men interacting with gangsters to make criminal cases and that bulger actually inherited this rather than created it himself. and so to me the histo

bulger's partner had been a top informant long before bulger was., who cooperated with the government. he was sort of a precursor to bulger in some ways. he took the stand in a capital murder case and fingered four innocent people for a crime they didn't commit. and the government knew it. it was known all the way up to j. edgar hoover. this became the dirty secret of that jurisdiction for many generations after that. we wouldn't know about that until the '90s when bulger went on the run and a lot of this dirty history came out. so this tradition of using gangsters in the way that bulger was used was established in the era before bulger and it reached deep into the system, beyond the fbi, into the prosecutor's office, all the way to the department of justice in washington, d.c. >> how did he figure out he could make this work or bend, as you say this precedent toward the criminal enterprise he wanted to run, while basically the feds were protecting him? >> many of the same fbi agents who handled joe barboza in the '60s and early '70s passed the torc

this trial was playing out, the conclusion of whitey bulger just as you guys were preparing the film. think that scott cooper the director did a great job, delivering this, you know, as you said ripped from the headlines story. >> we were talking about the intersection of the fbi and whitey bulger and you play the fbi special agent in charge. sometimes that intersection was a criminal relationship. can you explain that? >> i think the fbi had a real agenda, kind of based on partly on things like the godfather to go after the italian mafia when we thought about the mafia that's what we think, organized crime. this was a guyçr who was operag kind of in the irish mob and so the fbi made a deal with whitey to kind of look the other way if he would give them information on the italians. and i play a character who is -- he's kind of a combination, one of the few characters in the movie whose not an actual guy, a combination of a lot of guys that were head of the fbi field office at the time, and he sort of the voice of reason in a way in terms of the fbi. and this loose canon played by joe
