joining me now to discuss the north carolina senate race and the war in north carolina is dallas woodhouseonservative president of carolina rising and former director of americans for prosperity and joined by a former democratic political consultant. welcome to both of you. i want to start the discussion by putting two poll numbers up here. we showed you the solid average. this week public policy polling put out the favorable and unfavorable ratings. if you look at kay hagan not that good. 43% favorable. 48% not favorable. look at tom tillis 34, 48 unfavorable. dallas, i will start with you. to me that looks like the difference in the race. i see her lead in the polling average that we saw. i saw everything we described happening in north carolina and i say it looks to me like there were voters in north carolina having a negative reaction to two years of republican rule in raleigh. >> i mean, we certainly had a very substancive debate in north carolina. we are having a good debate in north carolina. at least in north carolina we are not having the ridiculous debate like they are in arkansa

sam ervin was born in morganton, north carolina in 1896. he called that little town that lies in the shadows of the blue ridge mountains his home until his death in 1985. he served with distinction in world war i. he attended the university of north carolina at chapel hill and later harvard university law school, which he went through backwards, but that is a story for later. he practiced law in morganton and became a traveling superior court justice and later an associate member of the north carolina supreme court. he probably would have been happy serving on that court for the rest of his life. but in may of 1954, just six days before the supreme court announced its decision in the brown ruling, our senator died suddenly sitting at his desk in the senate office building. at this critical juncture in north carolina and american history, the state's governor appointed sam ervin to the united states senate. he arrived just in time to lead the south's opposition to the brown decision. he arrived just in time to help bring down senator joe mcc

she is with us in north carolina . he is with us in chicago.teven drizin, how did this case happen? talk about the case of brown and mccollum, and after 30 years, it was discovered that the dna actually belong to another man. >> the case happened, as in many cases up false confessions, and began with a brutal, horrific crime, often the murder and rape of a small child. police officers are desperate to solve that case. who areo in on suspects innocent, but for whatever reason, believe they are guilty. in this case, the only reason they suspected henry mccollum is because the local 17-year-old girl had said she did not like the way he stared at women in the community. once they focused on mccollum, they brought him in and grilled him relentlessly for hours. they threatened him with the death penalty and promised him he would go home. a written detailed statement for him to sign. at that point in time, as he said, i pretty much what of sign anything in order to go home. the fact this confession was unreliable was apparent when the very face of thi

but i think it was genuine as they entered north carolina. these high expectations are overstated, but perhaps, at the time, they were understandable. north carolina boasted the south's most active progressive organization, it drew support from a variety of sources. in the early days of the campaign, college students, in particular, rallied wallace's cause. even before the formation of the progressive party, a group at the university of north carolina had established a wallace presidential committee. i actually had the opportunity to talk with a few of them when i was doing the research, much older now, as i was doing my research at chapel hill. in february, organizers brought together over 130 students from across the state for a two-day rally in chapel hill. on august 3, the party defied expectations, and a good deal of white hostility, by successfully concluding a petition drive that got wallace on the ballot. they collected almost 30,000 signatures. in the process, canvassers registered blacks to vote in at least six counties where no afr
