so let me ask you about writing about charleston now. the south has changed, as you said, has writing about it changed about the way you view it changed? is this novel that's in progress right now changed? >> i'm a person who loved this town. the killing of nine parishioners in charleston where young white kid goes in with a gun and i think what was so shocking as he sat down and listen to the service. the services about god. nine people are shot and i think for the first time, south carolina could grieve in one voice. white, black, everybody can everybody can grieve together in the same heart. the aching inability to make sense out of it, to make religious or spiritual sense was one of the most amazing thing they've ever been through. >> i want to ask you a little bit more about the new novel novel because people ask me about it and are excited about it. i went about it from a different angle about your writing prospects. that's something that i've thought a lot about. i think it interested many of us as riders because it became kind of
