last night, i happened to be reading a little bit of the history of chinatown. literally hundreds of san franciscos were attacking -- san franciscans were attacking chinese residents in chinatown. and at that time, there were a handful of san franciscans that stood up and stood up for the chinese community, and i just want to say how proud i am of the san francisco community, saying no to the hate. we're at a time, 145 years later, at this asian ceremony, we have our first asian sheriff, sitting next to our first asian public defender, sitting next to asian supervisors, supported by our mayor, our district attorney, our commissioners, and so many of you from the community, whether you're our commissioners, whether you're from the chamber, whether you're from the six companies or whether you're a nonprofit that's stood with us, i just want to say thank you. and during the year of the tiger, i say thank you as we come roaring back. and with that, it is my pleasure to welcome not just our first asian public defender, but the first asian public defender in the count

they have been in union square, chinatown, fishermen's wharf.come through. i just started deploying them in the castro on friday and saturday night. they have been a huge success of their. while we work to higher officers, there is plenty of retired officers who want to come in and contribute. it has been a good program so far. the last thing i will say about staffing before i get into my final thoughts is we have seen that we have deployed a lot of officers. we know what happened back in november when there was some looting that took place. our thought is that we need to have enough officers out in the union square area to make sure that when our tourists and visitors and residents are coming through there to shop that they deal with safety, similar to what you see in new york city where there is an officer on every corner. we will continue to maintain staffing in order to protect all that come through those areas. that has been successful and we have scaled down a little bit, but we have moved forward on that. the last thing i will say before

it's like this really big, momentous events for the chinatown and everything. a lot of people love to watch. it's amazing and it really able to showcase the wonderful treasures of our culture that we have here in chinatown. oh, my god, look what we made like. it's so beautiful. stephanie mufson and her crew built the floats that are in the parade. more than two months of hard work finally wrapped up friday afternoon. many reflect the year of the tiger. there's a lot of moving elements he's going to greet the crowd looking left to right emerging from the water, and then there's some moving pieces at the back. the floats are made with lots of glitter, wood and foam. mufson says there were supply chain issues. some were made with foam recycled from old floats. but there is no shortage of creativity. one float featured a bowl of noodles, a symbol of long life and tangerines. for good luck. the return of the parade is the celebration of community. we're remembering how important it is to just gather as a community to share moments of art and culture and really conne

we're gonna try way to bring tourism back to you the chinatown businesses the chinatown area becauses been hit hard economically, especially for the past two years local shops restaurants. some of them haven't really made it and some of them are just hanging on by a thread and so this means a lot to us in in different ways as a as a lunar new year celebration. it is a celebration of the year the tiger it basically it is a stands for boldness and resiliency and new beginnings. a lot of people do want to come out to the parade. do you have any tips on the best places to watch in person sapd or the local law enforcement will start closing roads around 3 pm. so if you're planning to drive in the city at the last moment, i probably would recommend against that just in case just so that you don't get locked up in in traffic with one of the street closures and things like that. i would say get there early pick a place to watch any place on the parade route is probably the best maybe closest to union square so you can check out those fireworks as well at the end. there have been some concern

it's like this really big, momentous events for the chinatown and everything. a lot of people love to watch. it's amazing and it really able to showcase the wonderful treasures of our culture that we have here in chinatown. oh, my god, look what we made like. it's so beautiful. stephanie mufson and her crew built the floats that are in the parade. more than two months of hard work finally wrapped up friday afternoon. many reflect the year of the tiger. there's a lot of moving elements he's going to greet the crowd looking left to right emerging from the water, and then there's some moving pieces at the back. the floats are made with lots of glitter, wood and foam. mufson says there were supply chain issues. some were made with foam recycled from old floats. yeah but there's no shortage of creativity. one float featured a bowl of noodles , a symbol of long life and tangerines for good luck. the return of the parade is a celebration of community. we're remembering how important it is to just gather as a community to share moments of art and culture and really con
