we are learning the chp is investigating yet another incident. the 17th along the i-80 corridor. alex savidge is live with what authorities are saying about this latest case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. fortunately nobody was hurt in the latest car to car shooting in the east bay. authorities are concerned. they are trying to track down the folks involved in the latest shooting here. it happened 8:30 sunday night. authorities say what happened is that a minivan pulled up alongside a taxi carrying two passengers at the time. someone in that minivan opened fire on the taxi hitting the cab. fortunately no one inside the cab was hit by the gunfire. taxi driver pulled off the freeway into a parking lot. that's where the two passengers in the cab ran off before authorities could get to that scene. scene. this was the 17th car-to-car shooting along the i-80 corridor since late last year. authorities believe the victims are targeted as part of an on- going gang feud in and around the richmond area. it has many drivers on edge. >> i'm surprised we have not done anything. i do

and the chp is here and they have the two left lanes closed for the investigation into the final crash that happened here. and it involved that big rig. that truck slammed into the back of a mazda sedan this morning. and the driver of the mazda was dead at the scene. i want to show you video from earlier on. we'll show you what the scene looked like. it's unclear why the driver of the big rig was unable to stop and slammed into the car. and we know according to chp investigators that at the time of the accident, traffic was slowing down because there were lanes closed up ahead because of two earlier accidents in this same area. >> we were slowly bringing vehicles in to try to open up the lanes to expedite the flow of traffic. and we believe this occurred from that. >> so it was a chain reaction situation according to the chp officer we spoke with this morning. the series of accidents, three accidents. it started with a serious crash around 1:30 this morning when an ambulance slammed into the back of a cement truck and the cement truck was stopped on the freeway. the 2 emts in the front

let's take a look, though, at what the chp had to contend with this morning. here's a look at footage that was shot by chopper 5. there you can see not only the big rig, but the large freeway sign. the overhead sign that was anchored in the center divider, that's one of the things that got knocked down and had to be picked up with a crane. the chp tells us how this accident occurred when we spoke with them earlier this morning. >> so we got a call of a vehicle stalled here on the freeway southbound 880 just south of "a" street. and we heard a couple of vehicles collided into that vehicle. it was a four-vehicle collision with possibility of a hazmat spill from the big rig. >> reporter: while they did manage to get the lanes reopened, they have only pulled this trailer over to the shoulder and the big job of unloading it before it can be righted is still under way. i spoke with the chp just moments ago. they expect to have it cleared up in a couple of hours. and guys, here's the good news. because it's now at the "a" street on-ramp and no longer on the freeway,

chp officers recorded video showing them in a very slow pursuit. leslie brinkley is live with more about the chihuahua chase. >> reporter: in a way those officers were saying it felled more like ahigh-speed puppy pursuit on the bay bridge. had a somewhat happy ending, started at 7:00 in an upramp off of treasure island. someone phoned in a report of a black chihuahua running west. a chp motorcycle officer joined in the chase as other units ran a traffic break. >> took awhile. he was fast, running, and we set up several road blocks, but he just ran right around them. eventually we were able to corral him, box him in. i used my jacket to get -- distract him and then the motor officer came up and took him into custody. >> reporter: the officers chased the chihuahua for five minutes on foot, saying he would have kept on running if they hadn't caught him. he is stressed out but safe at the san francisco animal care and control. no one has extend forward to claim the little guy yet. he has been nicknamed ponch after a character on the tv show chps and ha

now the chp taking extra steps to try and stop the violence. since november, chp has investigated 16 freeway shootings in contra costa and alameda counties. ten of them on i-80. now, three of those shootings are being investigated as homicides. the chp says all shootings, all of those shootings are gang related and are not random. in march, investigators began targeting known gang members. the chp has also increased its patrols along the i-80 corridor. last week officers arrested one gang member in connection with the shooting on highway 4. >>> developing news that will affect you this weekend some changes going on by the bay bridge. demolition continuing on another truck. a 500-foot truss. how is that going to affect drivers and their commute? we'll find out right now from chuck coppola who is joining us from the bay bridge. >> good morning, sam and laura. it shouldn't affect your morning commute or evening commute. we are talking about the boxy sections of the old bay bridge east of treasure island. behind me, the new bay bridge and the boxy

tonight, the chp tells us that multiple arrests are expected soon.ck coppola joins us along i-80 in the east bay with the details. >> reporter: the assistant chief of the golden gate division of the california highway patrol says he is confident that arrests are close. and with district attorney input, the cases are solid. this is coming since january. 18 shootings. mostly along interstate 80 in the east bay. the latest this week, happening along highway 4 near pittsburg. but this morning, after a meeting of 18 agencies, sharing information, the assistant chief of the golden gate division tells me arrests are close. and that the cases will stand up in court. very encouraging news for worried drivers. >> you just hope that it doesn't happen to you. >> after you've lived in this area for 50 years, this is nothing abnormal. this is normal. >> reporter: does it bother you that this is normal? >> i don't know, it guess -- if you're brought up in another country where there's a war. to them, that's normal. to us, this is our war. the gang violence. >> repo
