consumer investigator chris chmura shows us how easy it is. >> reporter: if you are not ready to file your 1040 tax return, it's okay. there is no reason to panic. the irs will let you file for an automatic extension. let's look at how. the good news is everyone can file electronically using tax software or at irs.gov. look for the link that says free file. you are basically filling out form 4868. it's really simple. just nine questions. they don't even ask why you are going it miss the deadline. submit it and that's it. make sure you file it before this year's deadline, april 18. the irs says they will contact you only if your request is denied. otherwise, filing this form gives you to october 15 to file a return. easy. but getting an extension to file your return is not an extension to pay. the irs says you must estimate your tax liability on form 4868 and should also pay any amount due by april 18. you can pay online at irs.gov/payments. if you don't pay on time, you could face interest or a late payment penalty up to 25%. if you can't pay right away, the irs says you might be able
