christie smith just got to the scene. she is gathering information now. firefighters did have to call for additional backup on this as the fire was growing. we'll continue to follow this and check win christie as soon as we can. >> now to a developing story, everybody curious about the situation with the malaysian airlines jet. crews are home after a second day of searching for debris. searchers have not found the two objects that were spotted in these satellite photos earlier this week. in all, five planes are sent to look for the objects, and australia is saying that the search will be extended another day. let's take a look at the massive size of this search area. it's very remote part of the indian ocean, about a 4-hour flight from australia's southwestern coast. malaysian flight 370 disappeared nearly two weeks ago now with 239 people on board. >> 6:01. russian president vladamir putin says his country will not retal dwrit u.s. sanctions. russian stocks taking a tumble a day after the u.s. ordered economic sanctions against two dozen people from Ñiput

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live at the scene where b.a.r.t. riders are still showing up expecting to catch a ride, christie. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. you can tell who they are. they have a puzzled look on their face. i think some of them are getting the message at this hour because the parking lot is really quite empty this morning. we're not seeing many cars parking there at all. when people do show up, though, i want to show you what they see when they walk up to the gate and what they do see is a sign that says, "no train service" at the station, make your way to the bayfair b.a.r.t. station. they're getting that message firsthand from a hard-working station agent that's been here in the parking lot chasing cars down, letting them know what's go on, there's no service from the south hayward, freemont or union city. this because of a trespasser hit and killed on the tracks apparently quite a bit of evidence scattered all over. it's taking a while to get back up and running. i did speak up with one man who had no idea what was g

christie smith has been live at the scene all morning. hristie, investigators, are they saying the fires are linked? >> reporter: at this point they say there is no reason to believe that but i did speak with neighbors who say they can't believe that they were just rocked out of sleep for a fire here, that calmed down, they were able to go back into their apartment and then hours later another fire broke out in a building behind the first apartment in a carport. neighbors say they heard horns going off and smell what had they thought was an electrical fire. nine cars damaged or destroyed. i spoke with dana who got his car out, drove right past those flames. >> looked out the window and this whole shed is in flames. so that was just stunning to me. like five hours ago the apartment across was in flames. so i'm still shocked because i'm new to california. >> reporter: on that same block seventh and c earlier about 11:00 a fire broke out in an upstairs apartment. a man, woman and 3-year-old inside, the flames blocked the door. so basically th

christie smith is live near the crime scene. christie this started at a nearby fast food restaurant. >> yes, it was a worker there that tipped off police that something might be wrong which led everyone to this intersection. fremont police called it a horrific scene. the mini cooper is still on the street. the motorcycle, you can see there how far it flew. police telling us they were lucky that a fast food employee started the driver saying what they say was intoxicated. that led them to the intersection where they say he blew through a red light and hit a man on a motorcycle. at first they didn't even see the victim on the ground until a passerby waved them over later. after the collision, the driver kept on going. >> it took a little while to catch up to that vehicle. once they did, again they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on that vehicle. >> they arrested that man in a field a short time later. the same man who investigators say he tried to pay for his food with a health care card at a taco bell overnight. he left his wa

christie smith live in stack sack. lawmakers expected to ask for his resignation. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, scott. that's right. and u.s. senators boxer and feinstein are now joining the chorus of lawmakers in sacramento that are demanding that state senator leland yee go ahead and step down, resign from his post. now in a couple hours there is going to be a vote this morning on the senate floor. what they are going to be doing is asking that he resign, if not, the president of the senate says that they are going to go ahead and vote to suspend him. shortly after yee's arrest colleagues moved to remove him from all committee positions here in sacramento. senator yee facing a number of serious, stunning federal charges ranging from bribery to weapons trafficking. wednesday morning there were a series of raids across the bay area, even here in sacramento. yee's attorney, though, says that he would be pleading not guilty and he shared that yee wrote a letter, dropping out of the race for secretary of state. >

christie smith is live in sacramento for us right now. very strong words from the leader. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, that's right. the vote came down 28-1 a few minutes ago. democratic leaders wanted senator leland yee to step down. there was debate over how far they should go. there was also a question whether he should be suspended with or without pay. i heard this morning, and he told me very early that senator leland yee would not resign or ask for a leave of absence, so his next move was up to those here in sacramento. one republican lawmaker says that suspension didn't go far enough. he should not be around. he wanted him gone for good. there is calls for two other democratic senators to step down too. both now are on leave. almost immediately after his arrest he was removed from all committee positions after that stunning arrest for weapons, trafficking. several locations were raided including yee's home. across the board they wanted him sidelined. >> a impermanent suspension puts this house on formal record that we une

christie smith is live at the park where a restroom was damaged. christie, police looking for an arsonist? >> reporter: they are. these three fires, they believe were deliberately set and set from the outside of the building. we did just go and check out the bathroom. didn't see as much damage there but we moved down the street to warm springs elementary. the reason we did that this is where fire investigators are focusing their attention. this is the snack shack by the baseball field at warm springs elementary. what they are doing is looking to see if there was accelerant left that the location or the other two locations, all essentially on the same street, may be a half mile apart including james leech elementary school. firefighters just told me that there was a ymca portable that was on fire overnight, a person called 911. there was also an alarm sounding from the school. another call came in at warm springs elementary, a snack shack was burning, the one we just showed you live and also a tree caught fire. then another call came in, and this cam

"today in the bay's" christie smith live by the crash scene with an update on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, busy van ness is back open. six lanes shut down overnight because of the collision that witnesses say they couldn't believe. i did just get off the phone with san francisco police and they say everyone involved in the collision has been accounted for, but the question now is trying to figure out exactly which of the people they are talking with is the driver. i wanted to show you what's left behind here, and that is a signal light on the ground. that's where one of the vehicles involved ended up. this happened around 1:00 in the morning at van ness and geary. it it basically shut the street down for hours while the investigation went on. and as paramedics arrived. witnesses say, a smaller car hit an suv and that suv rolled several times. described as flying through the air. inside that smaller car, the witness says that two women and a man got out, didn't stop, didn't stick around, but started to run away from the scene. >> so that's when

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live with an update on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. van ness is back open at geary, after shut down for quite some time after a collision that witnesses say they really couldn't believe what they were seeing. this morning, what's left of that is a traffic signal laying in the center median there. what witnesses saw is one car roll over, they say, and a second car with injured people, they got out and actually ran from the scene. this happened around 1:00 this morning at van ness near geary and shut down the busy streets for quite some time while investigators and paramedics arrived. witnesses say a smaller car hit a van or suv and the car rolled over several times, the larger one. it was described as flying in the air. inside the witness says that he saw two women and a man get out, they didn't stick around at all, they actually just started running away. >> so that's what i saw, the girl has blood on her face, and basically she's -- she was really panicked. some girls -- the girl standin

christie smith is live in fremont. you're hearing one of the buildings on campus won't be in use today. >> reporter: yes. good morning to you. that's right. we're talking about the portable building at james leech elementary which is up the road from where we're standing. we're behind warm springs elementary school. this is actually an outbuilding behind the baseball field that suffered some of the worst damage. what investigators are telling us is with all of these three fires the 911 calls came in only about a minute apart. investigators believe that this building, the smoke may have drifted down the street from this one and started some of the calls coming in. james leech elementary alarms started going off around 2:42 this morning at a portable classroom. firefighters tell me that it started on the outside and they had to cut one of the support beams on the building because of the fire and it's used by the ymca. normally that building won't be in use today. a sergeant with fremont police responding actually noticed

reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> the state is asking people to stop watering lawns and outdoor plants. during a news conference the department of water resources will urge people to stop outdoor watering because of rain. the storms that washed over california theft ground saturated gut nothing to alleviate the water crisis so the natural resources agency says that california would need a storm every other day all the way through may to bring us even close to normal. that's something to keep in mind. the state's water resources control board was expected to slash water delivery to farmers tomorrow, but it is holding off after a letter from senators boxer and dianne feinstein. it asks the board for a two-week delay saying there is enough rain to allow extra time to make the final decision. stopping water delivery from the river delta would basically shut down the california water system. >> san jose firefighters are doing what they can to help out with the drought as well. the fire administration will soon consider steps to cut back water

christie smith joins us live from san carlos. details how some could be jolted out of bed this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. happy friday. i got off the phone with a pg&e representative and she told me it will be loud, very loud, like a jet engine, could go on for an hour, maybe 90 minutes. go ahead and get your earplugs ready. this is because of a natural gas line, it's one that they are working on. looks like a pipe out of the ground at old county and commercial road here in san carlos. what they need to do is vent that natural gas line, and this is for repair work that connects to a line in redwood city where you'll see most of the activity this morning. the good news is that initially they said this might start at 2, 3, now they are telling us it's 7:00 a.m. start time so. at the very least it's not in the middle of the night. the reason for the delays they tell me there's a lot of prep work, a number of lines connect here so they want to be very careful dealing with this natural gas. that noise expected t

let's start with christie smith live outside of yee's home. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. state senator leland yee is waking up at his home in the sunset district this morning, what he's going to find there are a row of news reporters here waiting for him. last night he kim home and didn't have much to say about his mountain of legal troubles including all of the accusations against him, one that he accepted money for political favors, also other accusations of speaking with undercover fbi agents that he had access to illegal weapons from around the world. he actually looked tired as he came back home with his attorney. the state senator had a long list of federal charges filed against him. he appeared in court yesterday as raids went on at several bay area locations including his home here in the sunset district. yee who introduced anti-gun legislation is accused that he had weapons contacts around the world. his neighbors are stunned. >> very shocking like you know, i don't expect politicians to act this way.

christie smith is live at san francisco general hospital. police are still looking for suspects. >> reporter: they are. go morning to you. it's kind of amazing, seven people shot, all at the same time and all of them are expected to survive. their injuries mainly to extremities, arms and legs. police believe that this may have started with a fight in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood just before 9:00 last night. that street fight near turk and taylor, somehow escalated and someone opened fire. witnesses report hearing up to 18 shots fired. police as you said, still looking for the shooter. haven't released suspect information. they are trying to locate witnesses still but cameras may be the key. >> just as a matter of course we follow up and canvas for witnesses and video sources so we're following up on that. >> reporter: san francisco police have not released information on a motive or what this fight was about or even what relationship these seven people may have had with each other. again, they are still asking witnesses who may ha

christie smith, you talk todd a lot of frustrated commuters this morning. >> yes, good morning. service is back up, but what a rough way to start the morning commute. three bart stations shut down this morning. i spoke with a spokesman that said they're going to look at the process and see what they can do to speed up things and get the tracks opened up quicker following an investigation like last night's. the gates finally rolled up more than eight hours after a trespasser was killed on the tracks. they arrived early to. shut out. a sign at 4:00 this morning directing commuters to find another way to get to the station on their own. a station agent did her best trying to spread the world. b.a.r.t. says the police department wanted to wait until it was a little brighter in the morning to look for evidence spread in both directions to make sure they had everything. the transit ran parallel service, so commuters just had to find an alternate. >> will you be late? >> no, i would have been if i could not find a ride, but i did so i will be on time. >> you didn't know until you got h

christie smith is live at san francisco general with what police are saying about the shooting. good morning to you, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, peggy. it's amazing that seven people were shot and none of their injuries are life threatening. all of them taken to sf general hospital with injuries to their arms, legs, extremities. what police are telling us is that this started as a fight between several people in the tenderloin district last night, and at some point that fight escalated, someone pulled out a gun and opened fire. one witness described a chaotic scene having heard 18 shots possibly more. the intersection was shut down at turk and taylor for some time. police tried to investigate and question potential witnesses. >> just as a matter of course we follow up and canvas for witnesses and external video sources. >> reporter: san francisco police have not yet released suspect information or what the relationship was between those seven people who were shot. of course they are asking more witnesses who may have seen anything to contact san francisco police.

christie smith is live in san jose where a well known camp called the jungle has been for years. how are they polluting exactly? >> reporter: good morning to you. well, it's essentially what they are leaving behind and this is the first time that state wildlife officials have gone after a california city essentially accusing san jose of allowing homeless encampments to linger and become a pollution threat to local waterways according to the merc. this is a move by the department of fish and wildlife. it claims the city is not cleaning up encampments along coyote creek. the focus seems to be on the next cleanup and not ending camping along the creek. the complaint means state regulators will determine if trash and human swaeft causing damage similar to dumping chemicals in the water. we caught wake-up a homeless outreach group in an area called the jungle where a cleanup was going on. the city says its goal has been to get people out of the encampments. >> the city is taking its time in making sure we have the best plan possible. our goal is to house as many homeless residents as

today in the bay's christie smith is joining us live by yee's home. he's been laying low. >> reporter: yes, he has. leland yee is charged with seven federal felonies, and many feel is straight out of hollywood. many of the charges have to do with public corruption. we did speak with one legal expert who said that sometimes these type of charges can be very difficult to prove. that there's actually nothing illegal about giving money to politician's campaign expecting to influence that person. that it's also not illegal for a politician to take into account the wishes of a contributor. there are also accusations of coordinating a cash for guns scheme but that legal expert says the problem is when there is a blatant and clear exchange of money for political favors. >> the latin phrase is quid pro quo. they have to prove that the money was given in exchange for an explicit promise by the public official to do certain official acts. >> reporter: he used the case of former san jose mayor ron gonzalez as an example. he was indicted on bribery but a judge lat

christie smith joins us live with details on the proposed pod car transit system. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is much different than b.a.r.t., different than light rail, things we're used to. we're talking about a two-person pod car system that would basically move above the people on the street to help alleviate traffic congestion in places like the downtown area and other hot spots. skytran is the mountain view-based company that's developing a personal rapid transit system. sort of a small pod car using magnetic levitation. it's looking at the city here in mountain view to help back its demo project at the nasa aims research center that could rink the downtown transit with the google future campus and the ellis street station. the city considering talks with the u.s. transportation secretary and local companies about a possible grant fund for cars safely above the ground. >> they will be above traffic so they don't interfere with traffic. you can't get run over by a pod because it's elevated. >> reporter: that was from an interview we di

christie smith live in san francisco sun set district with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. senator leland yee has returned home. there are reporters outside of his home. when he did return home he didn't have a lot to say but he did speak quite a bit to undercover agents about illegal campaign contributions and weapons. the state senator made no comment about the federal charges or the 137-page affidavit that was filed. apparently in federal court he didn't say much but did speak a little to his attorney as searches went on at a number of locations including his home. he was arrested on corruption and arms dealing released on $500,000 bail. his attorney says it's a long and complicated case. >> we will always as in every case enter not guilty pleas, and then the case takes on a life of its own with discovery being provided, motions being made. >> reporter: 25 other defendants were also named including 54-year-old raymond the head of the organization, their offices in china town were part of the raid that went on. chow was the

christie smith is there with the latest. >> good morning to you. senator yee appeared rather calm when he went into federal court this morning with his attorney by his side. he stopped and smiled at all the reporters. his demeanor didn't give away all the legal troubles that he's having. he's facing seven federal counts. but outside after the proceedings, his attorney said that he feels that the fbi went after yee and added the gun charges, rather late in this long investigation. we were actually the only camera outside of senator leland yee's home in san francisco when he left for court this morning, but didn't answer any questions about the charges against him involving political corruption and the promise of political favors and plans to arrange illegal weapons deals. yee's hearing today was actually about securing his $500,000 bond with real properties, so he did not enter a plea today. his attorney did say that they might look at entrapment as a defense once they have a look at all the evidence. his attorney had this to say about all the charg
