we told you about the chance of rain. >> happy monday, christina. across the san mateo bridge, for example. on the map no problems for this connector and the east bay and the peninsula. and little slowing shows up on our sensors but there's no activity there as far as any lanes blocked. things should clear in the next couple of minutes. westbound 580 and an easy drive pretty much at the speed limit towards that dublin interchange. these east shore freeways look at their speeds and looking at a really nice, easy, pleasant drive. towards the bay bridge and the maze and we'll show you a live shot for san rafael southbound no problems between san rafael and the golden gate bridge. you guys have a change coming up for the golden gate bridge. >> we do. >> starting this morning if you cross the golden gate bridge it will cost you another dollar. drivers with fast track will be charged $6. without fast track will cost you $7. it will go up by a quarter every year until it reaches $8. the increase is to prevent a $142 million budget shortfall. >>> still ahea

>> i think you're right, christina.he game-time traffic is usually an issue afterwards but today 1:35 in the afternoon will mix with all the mid-day traffic and business traffic and folks just trying to get out there. so a lot of folks like that over here in the south bay, a little bit lighter because spring break has rotated throughout the month and 85 and 87 start to show more slowing. capital expressway up to 680 and continue with the build and the slowing and on-ramp, sound like the metering light was taken out by the earlier crash and the freeway itself, a typical slow down as you approach the international airport. southbound 680 through pleasanton. speeds coming down towards the 45-mile-per-hour mark at their worst but overall at the 50s and that's better news. slowing coming into livermore and lead into dublin westbound 580 actually moving pretty smoothly and just got reported west 580 at 238. the split there's a crash and it sounds like some fluid is leaking from at least one of the vehicles involved. the clean

"today in the bay" chase cain live in san jose to explain. good morning, chase. >> good morning. when christina loren is talking about rain and maybe thunderstorms the first thing that pops into your mind is probably not the word drought but we are in bad shape here in california. and, in fact, bringing some critters, rodents, pests out from hiding to find water. in fact, just on the other side of montgomery hill park at evergreen college, someone spotted a four-foot rattlesnake and in san francisco, people are dealing with rats. they say that they are seeing a lot more of them than usual and, again, it's because those rats are looking for water. hopefully they should be able to find that today. but, again, the underlying problem here is the severe drought. in fact, some paleo climentologists believe california is in the middle of its worst drought in some five centuries.

christina? >> yes, that's kind of the problem. i think for regular users that's what makes it such a difficult bug to deal with because we don't have a lot of control over it. the bottom line is that every server has to update itself on its end to be safe. every application, every web server, every device talking about a smart phone, router, has to be updated. unfortunately there is just not a way to push those updates out because they are being maintained by various companies. because various companies maintain them when the disclosure happens some companies were given advance warning and were able to patch things. some were able to do what they could to patch things before the vulnerability became public. but when you talk about a code that is used on 66% of the web, unfortunately, we don't have the mechanism to push and update. it would be great if we did, but we don't. >> what does this piano to me? are there different systems in place for different kinds of vendors? are banks using the same kind of secure software protections

christina has been watching those. a lot of candy to hide this weekend. >> you know, that easter bunny will get out there early because, you know, him and mother nature, they talk. they know what is going on and it is going to be warm out there. temperatures this morning, mostly starting out in the mid-50s. it's comfortable. today we're talking about the low 70s and then by easter sunday, closer to 80 degrees. mid-80s on the way to the tri-valley. pretty comfortable at the coast and microclimates are going to play a role in your weekend weather. i'll show you that in just a moment. for today you made it to friday, it's good friday and temperatures could not be better. we're right on track with seasonal averages and just a touch above in some cities. but 63 degrees, kind of a cool day in san francisco, 70s else where and especially areas in the south bay. really warm day today. what about 72 degrees by tomorrow and on sunday up to 80 degrees. chocolate melts, as we were talking about earlier this week at 69, 70 degrees.

i think what's important is christina renna. esh said some things that i think i have prosecutors absolutely intrigued. she talked about a town being mayorless. several towns perhaps based on voting data. she apparently indicated there was a role the campaign had in certain decisions that were happening in the governor's office. what they would like to do is see not only what more she could tell them to follow those areas, but see very aggressive questioning of christina renna could take it even farther than the direction that was managed by the attorneys appointed by chris christie. >> just to take it up to the -- this idea of having these kinds of communications between the campaign, the christie re-election campaign and his office, even though it doesn't directly implicate christie in bridgegate itself, it does paint a picture of a campaign operation that was certainly infiltrating the political, the day to day operations of his office. >> with any governor running for reelection it's going to have this kind of interaction. t

i know that answer, but i want to hear your take, christina.i think one thing that is a misconception for the general public it's easy to forecast climate. that is nearly impossible to do. what i can tell you is forecasting weather on the short term is a lot easier than forecasting three months out. or the following year out. >> yeah. >> if an el nino does happen, it doesn't mean for certain we're going to get ample rainfall, and higher than average rainfall year. it's one of those things that could work out in our favor, we cross our fingers and pray that it does, but we just have to wait and see. >> i think that caution is great, back in '76 and '77, we had the historic drought in the bay area. it was also an el nino year. just because we're hearing about an el nino, doesn't mean we'll get a pile of rain next year. >> in this fire season, we're not getting the rain. >> what are the chances this is going to be maybe some sort of mult multi-drought sounding sensational? we may not know that, what are your thoughts on this, you guys? >> i think

nbc bay area's christina loran explains why snowfall is more important than rainfall when it comes to getting us out of the drought. >> reporter: the ski season started with uninviting conditions due to meager snows in december and january. overall snowpack is still way below average. >> we're concerned about fire  danger in the summer. we're as pragmatic as anybody. we're still able to ski. >> reporter: thanks to technological strides in snow making, tahoe ski resorts have been able to steadily make and preserve snow keeping large crowds content and most ski runs open. >> we have a whole month of skiing left at the mountains. >> reporter:ut aside from the ski resorts you might be surprised to learn that snowpack is absolutely critical to the bay area's water supply. the snow you see here supplies roughly one third of the water supply. hetch hetchy is the primary source of water for four bay area counties. >> it is our reservoir up there in the mountain ranges. >> reporter: it's the mountains that hold the key to our long-term water future. >> we're going to check back in with chris

>> we have the warning for folks, christina. we know after the rain and during the rain but right now we're looking at the aftermath, live look at 101, i want to show you the roadway. look at the bright sign by ikea highlighting one of the puddles. it's getting a break from the rain. on the right side you see the east bay and it's showing a lot more green where our weather systems indicate you have wet roads. drying off as we speak. lower the speeds because it's slick in many spots. we'll zoom in north of the san mateo bridge. traffic is flowing through pacifica. watch for fog and along the great highway where it's closed because of the sand during windy times, there is flooding reported so keep that in mind. looking to the tri-valley and the castro valley where the green indicates wet transition. the north bay, the rain kicking in. we see puddling and ponding, the blue there, napa, vacaville, watch for that. live at our bay bridge. a smooth flow. our camera is pretty steady but we'll watch for the winds to affect our cameras. >

we have more with andy bowen at the woods hole oceanographic institute and christina symons. before we get to the depths, there is a particular map i have been watching on cnn for the last several days. could you put that up on the screen now? it shows the triangulation of where the pings have been located. christina, if the distance is somewhere between 13 and 17 miles, why is the search area between massachusetts and connecticut combined? >> there is always a bit of error as to where is the sound actually coming from. if you are standing still and you hear something from the sea floor, is it in front of you or behind you. this is why they need multiple ships to hear the sounds from different locations. i suspect the margins of error depicts that. >> andy, my knowledge is limited to the days where we were a kid and jumped in the pool and hold our nose and try to talk to one another. sound is a large part of this. >> it is, michael. the analogy that christina used, if you heard a gunshot or clap or some loud sound and in the mountains for example, it is difficult to localize

wind this morning, christina, and a few raindrops. >> we certainly did.you this live picture of san rafael where you can actually see the cloud moving with the naked eye this morning. take a look at how fast we have movement in the upper levels of the atmosphere. this is a storm system pulling out and pulling out quickly. we're clearing out so nicely at the immediate coast but still all clouded up overcast sky in san jose. at least for the time being. however, a little breezy out there and the wind is starting to relax a touch. it's going to remain breezy for the next couple hours. we're talking about clear conditions throughout your inland valleys and meanwhile those clouds will kind of cling to the coastline and up to the mountains, as well. we'll see those clouds kind of clinging to your mountainsides and that's where you have the moisture. completely clear conditions for the greater bay area and the rain returns as we head through late week which is great news for those of you suffering from the allergies of the season. whenever we get the rain lays d
