claudine wong is live in oakland with the details on that and also on a man who was shot and the continuing police investigation. claudine. >> reporter: we are at oakland police headquarters where investigators are trying to figure out who is responsible for this latest homicide. this comes after police try to crack down on violence >> this was the scene overnight. repeated gunfire shook that -- we don't know what the victims were doing there. or if they were targeted. but the shooting which happened just after 11:30 last night left a woman dead and a man fighting for his life. the shooting happened in east oakland. and while police say that particular area is usually quiet in terms of calls, the city also says last year 60% of homicides were on the east side. that is why they launched operation cease fire there last year. a program they are launching ones again this year. if the name sounds familiar, it may be because it's a program that has been successful in other cities like boston and chicago and because it's been tried more than once here in oakland. the program was brought to the cit

in hayward, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> two suspected lake county marijuana growers accuseding a teenaged sex slave have pleaded not guilty to federal drug charges. a 30-year-old and 20-year-old entered their pleas this morning in federal court in san francisco. according to court documents, prosecutors obtained a recorded confession from baletta. the documents say the 15-year- old southern california girl was sexually abused by the men and kept in a 4-foot by 2-foot box. she was also forced to help process marijuana. both men face life in prison if convicted. >>> a san francisco sheriff's deputy charged with bank robbery was back in court. he's accused of ronning a bank of america -- robbing a bank of america branch. this week, he was also arrested on a charge of felony grand theft of a firearm. the district attorney's office told us today they will file a motion next month to have the two cases consolidated. prosecutors say they believe the two matters are related but would not give details. >>> solano county has confirmed the first human case of west nile virus. a fairfie

claudine wong explains how the violence unfolded in this report. >> reporter: investigators today are still trying to figure out what led to this deadly shooting in antioch just after 7:45 last night. the back window of this car shattered by the bullets that left one man dead and another critically injured. >> everybody was staring. there were cars parked around. the police were trying to detour everybody around to delta fair and it was -- was a pretty crazy scene. >> reporter: that is what only one of two crime scenes. this scene is about a half-mile away. that's where police shay the shots were fired as the two victims were in their car driving down the road. police believe someone in a cold-colored four-door sedan started shooting. both victims were hit. the driver kept going until he got to somersville road where police found them. one victim, a man from richmond, was pronounced dead at the scene. the other man, from vallejo, was listed in critical condition. police would not release other information. streets were shut down as police collected evidence and conducted inview -- int

claudine wong has been monitoring the fire from our newsroom.orter: we are getting word the firefighters are getting briefed at base camp. we do have new information for you about how big the fire is right now from a map post. i want to show you that map that was put up. a little tough to see. there is a red line that circles the area where the fire is. it gives us an idea of how big the fire has gotten. what is really important to take a look at is at the top of that map. there you can see the date and 105,620 acres. that is the total area. keep in mind yesterday that was about 54,000 and then bumped it up a to 63,000. now that number telling us the situation is worse. here's what we are waiting for. we are waiting for more information about containment. at last check it was only 1% contained. it was down from 5%. we did know there were a couple thousand homes threatening and structures. we do not know if that number has also grown because of course when the acreage grows other things are in the fires path. we know the conditions have been very

claudine wong, channel 2 news. >> the bay bridge is on the fast track to opening. we'll know when it will officially open to traffic. we're looking at it, now, from the traffic cameras. the traffic is moving along, it's lit up quite nicely. the opening date will be announced in oakland, that will be on labor day weekend. they need the ideal conditions, they'll shut down the bridge five full days to realign the lanes and demolish part of the old structure. >> it doesn't matter. there are some places where the weather matters a great deal, it matters here because of the paving work. you need the right temperatures at the right times. >> the cost of the bridge is $6.4 billion and that's 4.5 higher than the original estimates. the entire span will shut down for five days beginning on wednesday august 28th. construction work would take place during the holiday weekend with the bridge opening in time with the morning commute on tuesday, september 3rd. >> they're searching for a man who robbed a person at a high school and pistol whipped the girl. a boy who tried to help

ktvu's claudine wong has been out there since 4:30. what are the police saying now, claudine? >> reporter: well, it appears, dave, that the two victims were simply driving on the street when the shots were fired. if you take a look behind me. this is delta fair road. you can see glass on the roadway. they've opened the roadway. and the number of cars, it gives you an indication of how busy it is here. it was busy last night at 7:45, when all of this happened. i want to show you what happened out here when police were gathering evidence. this roadway was shut down until about 90 minutes ago. again, this is where police say the shooting happened. it appears at this point, that these two men were driving down the street when another car drove up and the person or persons inside started shooting. the victims didn't stop, though, even both of them were hit by budget, -- by bullets. the. suspects drove away near somersville and that's where the officers found them. one man is dead. the other is in in the hospital in critical condition. police are still trying to notify the victims'

ktvu's claudine wong tells us about the new evacuations ordered in the face of the growing fire. >> let's give you a look at the fire area, to the west pine lake and there they are trying to save structures and homes. here is highway 120 it makes its way through the fire zone, it is still shut down near groveland. on the east side yosemite national park, the fire has made its way past the boundaries and is two miles from the reservoir. conditions are shaping up for another difficult day, more were told to leave overnight. >> you could see the redness where it was burning and then about 10:15 last night the deputy came by and told us we should leave. >> he spent the night in the park, daybreak brought the news that firefighters lost ground and the fire gained it. more firefighters are on the ground today but veteran says crews are getting beat up and what is happening on the line is unheard of. >> our second year of drought. our fuels are tender dry and i just think that everything is aligning with the weather and what is going on in california that i don't know if the weather is changing

. >>> i'm claudine wong in for tori campbell. >>> a grandmother is in critical condition at this hour after a house fire in san jose. that fire started just before 9:00 this morning at a home. janine de la vega is there live and spoke with the family members who were inside the house. janine? >> reporter: claudine, family members are very upset about what happened and they are emotional drained. i spoke with the grande son inside the house -- grandson inside the house. he said the smoke filled up so quickly, he couldn't see in front of him. he managed to escape. crews are watching for hot spots. when firefighters arrived to the home on commodore drive off jackson avenue, they saw a column of smoke and heavy flames. they received a 911 call from people inside at 8:40. who told them they had smoke up to their knees and two men were able to escape. but a woman in her 70s, the grandmother, she was trapped inside. >> firefighters entered the back side of the structure where the fire was and they were able to pull out one of the residents from the burning structure. that person is in critic

claudine wong is out there right now at opd headquarters. what is the latest on what happened? >> reporter: we went by the scene just about an hour and a half ago. it had been cleared. police now back at headquarters. we're here now. we've been talk together folks here. the investigation shifting from the gathering of evidence to putting all the pieces together. i want to take you to the scene so you can see what it looked like earlier this morning as police were gathering evidence. this is the 800 block of 100th avenue. here's what we know. the two victims were both in their 20s. both in a parked car around 11:30 last night when the shooters came up to the car and started firing. it's unclear if they walked up or drove up. the woman died at the scene. pronounced dead there when police arrived. the man survived but police say he is fighting for his life. he at last word was in critical but unstable condition and was in surgery in the last couple of hours. it's not clear how he was doing and at this point the motive is still unclear. this comes one day after oakland police annou
