both were killed by this csx train. according to each girl's twitter account, the teenagers were sitting on the train bridge over main street when the accident happened. we spoke to members of both families who were obviously too distraught to talk. they asked us to respect their privacy, and we di.d the two teens were friends for awhile. both were good students with great families. both girls participated in a dance program at the school and were well liked and well known. just an unfortunate tragedy as they get ready to start their school year in the coming week or so. now both girls were alum night at mt. heb been class -- hebron class 2010. they will have counselors on hand. >> what do you think about this being a hang out. it's been a long tradition with kids running up and down the tracks, even with posted signs to stay off. >> reporter: it's a popular hangout spot, to hang out on top of the ellicott city sign. we hear it's a popular hangout. >> all right. we'll talk to ken ulman who is the howard county executive

a csx train derailed in main street in ellicott city. two people are dead. ken almann joins us on the phone. good morning to you. >> tell us first. we have reports of people having died as a result of this derailment. bring us up to speed first on the deaths in this incident. >> yes. there are two victims. police investigation is continuing. there are two victims who are up on the train bridge. we are now waiting for additional csx cranes to move train cars that flipped over on to automobiles to be able to pull those off to search the automobiles for any additional victims. >> so this train derailed and hit other vehicles, is that right? >> well, there's a county-owned parking lot that many folks use to go to bars and restaurants in the historic main street nell cot city. this is about midnight on a monday night. so there were a number of vehicles in that parking lot. when the train derailed, about 21 train cars derailed off the tracks right in the heart historic main street ellicott city. they flipped on to this parking lot adjacent to the rail bridge and c

csx train. it was carrying coal. 21 of the cars derailed. we have a nearby parking lot, too, that apparently was impacted here when some of that coal fell on to cars that were parked there. again, we have two confirmed fatalities. a short time ago we got an update from police and they told us about some reports that they got just shortly prior to this accident. >> we have learned through information from friends and family members that there may have been two teenagers who were on the bridge in this area shortly before the incident. at this point, it is unconfirmed if those two people are the victims. so right now we're working to get them extracted and confirm their identities before we release that for sure. >> reporter: so still a lot of work to be done on this investigation. no identities on the two that were killed. i'm joined by howard county executive ken alman. talk about what we have learned. >> since i got the call at midnight, about 12:30, 80 cars carrying coal. 21 of them derailed. this is in the heart of historic main street, el

csx crews continue to work at this hour. basically bulldozing coal and repling sections of a train track brought in. four sections each. the ntsb calling this operation to a well orchestrated, industrial ballet. they have to deal with each car one piece at a time and make sure not to damage all the civil war history. so far, the ntsb tells us 18 of 21 cars have been removed. locomotives have since been released back to csx. they say the investigation as far as what happened it will take quite some time. >> there is focus on every aspect. we are still looking at signal systems and operations. we are looking at the track, absolutely. we are still looking at the mechanical aspects, equipment, downloaded information. it takes quite a bit of time bending the accident happens in a matter of seconds but the investigation is very lengthy and thoreau. >> the ntsb says it still could not say whether the two women killed in the train derailment had anything to do with the actual train derailment. main street is expected to be reopened

at 9,000 feet long and weighing 5,000 tons, this mile long csx test train was brought in to check the infrastructure of the rails. experts watched as it made its way through historic ellicott city. >> after that happens they will remove the cold out of the lower lot where the train cars fell that busted the retaining wall. then when another -- run another train through to make sure the retaining wall is down. we will watch to make sure we're comfortable that this train is safe to open these tracks again. >> progress continues to me but there is work that needs to be done. >> dozens of dump trucks are coming in to get the coal of town. that is where we need to keep the streets closed. they got a lot of fixing up of our infrastructure to do as well. >> thursday morning, crews moved out the last of the 21 overturned cars left from the wreck. they packed up and hauled away many of the heavy equipment used to remove a damaged cars. down the road from the bridge, a makeshift memorial for the two 19-year-old college students whose lives were cut short from the derailment. residents and store

it's a test run to see if the csx track that runs through the heart of ellicott can handle the load. an 80 car train of new autos went through without a hitch. now it's continuing the clean up. coal stains everything, the curbs black, the roads, and it's piled up on the side of the track. >> it's chewed up the roads, lot of sidewalks and curb and gutter damage and damage to the traffic light. we fled to make sure its left as good if not better than before they crashed the train. >> reporter: this is the first look at the bridge itself, engineers were afraid that it was damaged but it was found to be sound. underneath its dammed off and giant vacuums sucking up contaminated water. they were relatively lucky. only about a half of one coal car fell close to the water and about a hundred pounds went into the creek. the coal is low sulfur so any damage is expected to be light. the other issue is coal dust. >> only real concern in this incident is with the first responders. there is no -- serious, serious risk for residents obviously, they were fairly faraway from the incident. >> reporter

they're trying to clear the tracks after 21 cars of an 80 car csx train carrying 9,000 pounds of coal derailed shortly after midnight. both the cleanup and investigation are under way. two confirmed fatalities here, the victims have been identified as elizabeth nass and rose meyer, both 19 years old. csx releasing a statement that says in part we're offering our sincere condolences to the families, the company supporting the investigation of the site under the direction of the national transportation safety board. as for the ntsb itself, investigators say there was a video camera on board. they are going to take a close look at that to see exactly how the derailment happened. the train was travel iing approximately 25,0 miles at the time and will look directly at signals and track conditions and communications. the cleanup will take several days in the area. you can see part of the operation to just clear the tracks, if you will. the investigation could take months. the other issue, verizon telling us they have had some impact in the area as far as service, mostly minor and mostly lon
