it's a test run to see if the csx track that runs through the heart of ellicott can handle the load. an 80 car train of new autos went through without a hitch. now it's continuing the clean up. coal stains everything, the curbs black, the roads, and it's piled up on the side of the track. >> it's chewed up the roads, lot of sidewalks and curb and gutter damage and damage to the traffic light. we fled to make sure its left as good if not better than before they crashed the train. >> reporter: this is the first look at the bridge itself, engineers were afraid that it was damaged but it was found to be sound. underneath its dammed off and giant vacuums sucking up contaminated water. they were relatively lucky. only about a half of one coal car fell close to the water and about a hundred pounds went into the creek. the coal is low sulfur so any damage is expected to be light. the other issue is coal dust. >> only real concern in this incident is with the first responders. there is no -- serious, serious risk for residents obviously, they were fairly faraway from the incident. >> reporter

they're trying to clear the tracks after 21 cars of an 80 car csx train carrying 9,000 pounds of coal derailed shortly after midnight. both the cleanup and investigation are under way. two confirmed fatalities here, the victims have been identified as elizabeth nass and rose meyer, both 19 years old. csx releasing a statement that says in part we're offering our sincere condolences to the families, the company supporting the investigation of the site under the direction of the national transportation safety board. as for the ntsb itself, investigators say there was a video camera on board. they are going to take a close look at that to see exactly how the derailment happened. the train was travel iing approximately 25,0 miles at the time and will look directly at signals and track conditions and communications. the cleanup will take several days in the area. you can see part of the operation to just clear the tracks, if you will. the investigation could take months. the other issue, verizon telling us they have had some impact in the area as far as service, mostly minor and mostly lon
