hey, dell winning streak at eight. first, it's time for after-hours action in dell. tim goldman, our surprise guest again. >> rich santelli, good evening to you. you know, if i'm a surprise guest, dell's numbers are certainly a surprise amongst themselves. the company really just taking everybody off guard, releasing these numbers a couple of minutes before the closing bell. to say we were scrambling is an understatement. nonetheless, the company did beat the street. that 24 cents includes four cents of surprising expenses. so really the apples to apples here is 28 cents. >> so it was bottom line then or top line, buddy? >> it's bottom and top line. that is the one-two punch that analysts were hoping for. it's one thing to look at at improvement in the top line, but if that's from netbooks, then, you know, who really cares? but the real news here is the fact that dell did report improving top-line performance and they were able to translate that to the bottom line. so cost-cutting, improving business. gross margins, 18.7%, even in the face of the netbook sales. this

dell is up. dell was up 5% the last time i saw you. than expected results. after the closing bell yesterday, a number of firms coming out raising the price target there as dell sees some improvement in the overall business. and then there's the intel news which broke this morning raising the revenue forecast for the third quarter from $9 billion from 8.55. definitely given a lift to all of the big cap technology stocks this morning. intel itself is up 4 1/2%. it's lifted apple, microsoft, research in motion, and google, all the big names are to the plus side. it's set up to a. good day. now with intel news on top of that you're looking at a pretty good day for technology. as i said, we're already up better than 1% across the board for the nasdaq. marvel is helping as well, certainly from a chipper expectative. it's up 7 1/2% today. earnings beat the forecast ahead of expectations as well. infosys is lower this morning on a downgrade at morgan stanley. the overall market has pulled higher and it's gone into positive territory. bebe stor

and here's what the analyst said and why i think it's pretty significant not only for dell but for the technology sector in general. he says, "we are now more optimistic on the pc demand outlook and believe the downward mix shift has played out for the most part." interesting commentary there from broad-point amtech. the stock is up as i said about 2 1/2% today. other big moves in stocks today in terms of large cap tech, take a look at oracle. the stock is up better than 1% and it's now trading at nearly a 52-week high. apple, meantime, got the upgrade to its leopard operating system will be available on friday. it's a fractional move to the down side today for apple. but nonetheless an interesting story that people will be following. sears holdings, though, man, this just is a story that continues to eat up this stock price. down 2 1/2%. a negative mention in "barron's" over the weekend. it says cutting costs may not generate enough cash flow to mount a turnaround, a turnaround that was very much in focus, at least the prots prospects of one this past week, when sears holdings was out

we're not a manufacturing facility for dell. we're the world headquarters. so this is where corporate office,. and the benefit for round rock has been we cut a deal with dell back in the early '90s, and we agreed to sell some of the sales tax that they generate. so now for the city of round rock, that's upwards of $20 million a year of sales tax that we collect simply from dell. but the manufacturing doesn't really affect us. >> okay. you know, just to follow up on that, mayor mcgraw, you mentioned lower taxes. if you look at your property taxes, they are one of the lowest in the nation, but your sales tax is up there at 8.25%. is it your experience that you can tax people on the sales taxes but you really can't go after them when it comes to property taxes? >> well, you have to have the right combination. our citizens have actually voted to increase taxes a couple times. one of the most successful ones is the citizens actually voted a .5 cent sales tax increase in the '90s strictly for road improvemen improvements. and we've been able to leverage that sales
