detroit is a great city.the sense that there will be a comeback and the comeback will be breathtaking. >> poppy harlow joining us from new york. poppy, first of all, kudos to you for all the time you spend in detroit and reporting from there. >> it's my second home. look, i think detroit has been ignored. i think people need to pay more attention to how do you fix detroit? so we like to go back there. >> look, you showed us two possible solutions to this crisis. maybe give us some real sense of how serious a problem this is. >> it's a huge problem. i sort of found out about this a year ago, and i was trying to find the right time to do this story, and it was perfect for etocracy week. but the problem is massive. in detroit they have a 50% higher obesity rate than the rest of the country, a 70% higher diabetes rate in the country. they are more likely to get seriously ill or even die prematurely because of their lack of access to healthy food. you saw in just part of our hunt, we spent hours looking for health

people in detroit are hopeful, optimists. they believe that detroit is a great city.downturn, there's always a sense there will be a comeback, and the comeback will be breathtaking. >> unbelievable. poppy harlow joins us now from new york. poppy, it's hard to fathom for many people, when you don't live in an area like that, when you see a supermarket every couple of blocks, you showed us two possible solutions to the food crisis. just how serious is this problem in detroit? >> reporter: i mean, i think, you know, you said it at the outset, the fact they have 50% higher obesity, 70% higher diabetes. detroit can't get a break. they have a broken education system. they have a true jobs crisis on their hand, worse than most places in this country, and the reality for 500,000 people living in detroit, don, is if they want anything remotely healthy, they have to drive twice as far or take the bus twice as far just to try to find a grocery store. there was actually a study that came out that's pretty unbelievable. it was done two years ago. and it said the reality is people

>> like most -- not like most, but like a lot of people, african-americans lived in chicago, detroit,k, summertime your parents sent you down south. so many summers it was split up. it was spent half with my father's mother which is in snow, alabama and the other was spent in atlanta, georgia with my mother's mother, and she's the one that put me through morehouse and the nyu graduate film school. she lived to be 100 years old and she's an art teacher. she taught art for 50 years and the south and for 58 she never had one white student because of segregation, and a lot of white students missed out on a great teacher. anyway, she saved her social security checks for 50 years and used that money to send her grandchildren to college. so since i was the oldest i had first dibs. >> when you read about spike lee often in the media, it is said the lead tag line controversial. do you accept that and do you buy that? >> i think that people are very lazy today. journalists, so instead of trying to be creative or do their job, it's easy to use a one-word label to define one person. how can you u

to feel like he is from the tougher parts of detroit.poke to 1 white guy who had helped start the crips gang in detroit. there is this blending of culture and stuff in there. tavis: your story about having gone to prison in jackson, you invest yourself pretty heavily in researching for the roles that you play? >> it depends on what it is and where you go for your reference points can really just a pen. in this case, i cannot think of anything better than asking guys who have gone through the process of being reviewed for parole themselves what it was like, and understand the process better and what it did to them emotionally and psychologically, to know they were coming up to this moment of being judged. it's very intense, and i really cannot think of anybody to ask, other than people who were going through it. tavis: was there a threat that you found consistent among the guys you talk to about how they process that moment? >> it definitely caused people anxiety, which was the thing i honed in on. this story is so much about a person who
