i'm eric thomas, moderating today's special roundtable show. now, more than 1,000 african-american students were recently honored by san francisco unified school district for having great grades. it was a part of this year's black history month celebrations. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez introduced us to some of these students. >> raven alyas is among 1,400 african-american students making the honor roll at one of the many public schools in san francisco. today, she will be acknowledged by the san francisco alliance of black school educators. >> i think it's important for us to acknowledge the people who are doing well, because then it encourages kids who aren't. >> students must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher to be recognized. maintaining that gpa helps students compete with others who are on track for college. >> it's very important that our students are exposed to and receive the messaging that you can do this and you can compete just like everyone else. >> linda jordan is the african-american post-secondary pathway manager, h

. >> news anchor eric thomas was there and joins us live now. eric? >> reporter: indeed. that video was leaked after it was shown by the oakland police department. the investigating igt agency to the family of the man shot and killed. the chief walked us through step by step using stills like this of what he says happened at that scene on january 3rd and that circle there, you see that, the yellow circle, he says that is a gun that was being held or wrestled for by the suspect, tindle. he walked out, the chief did to discuss the interpretation. the people who released the video yesterday says it shows that tindle was shot in the back while he was helpless. the chief said the officer responding to that -- >> upon getting shot -- >> saw what he believed to be a gun and he warned or at least said several times, put your hands in the air before the shots were fired. let's hear what the chief said to us a few minutes ago. >> it is a tragic loss for the family members and this is not to minimize in any way, shape or form what they may be going through or may be experiencing or

i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. right away let's get to abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian. what are you learning? >> reporter: oakland's mayor libby schaaf issued this warning late tonight stating multiple credible sources have told her i.c.e. could start operations within the next 24 hours. you may recall earlier this month homeland security raided 77 businesses in san francisco, san jose, and sacramento looking for illegal workers. agents demanded proof that employees were legally allowed to work in the united states. in her statement schaaf reiterated that oakland police would not participate in i.c.e. activities. she said, "we want residents to prepare, not panic. we understand i.c.e. has used activity rumors in the past as tactic to create fear. our intent is for our community to go about their daily lives without fear but resiliency and awareness. i know that oakland is a city of law-abiding immigrants and families who deserve willto live free from the constant threat of arrest and deportation." we did re

i'm eric thomas. >> those powerful winds next over a fence and left two people injured in san francisco. >> abc 7 news reporter kate larson is live at the scene with the details. kate. >> well, we're in 23rd and san jose. i'm going to step out of the way right now because you can see workers here at this building development where a fence fell on two people walking across the street. we're going to go ahead and take a look at video because we were on scene as workers were trying to clean up the fence. it was a chain link fence with a green privacy tarp behind it and then police told me that there was also some plywood along with some plastic barriers and around 2:15 this afternoon the wind knocked them over as a man and a woman were crossing the street. the fence fell on them and, unfortunately, both of them were injured. the man is 68-year-old man has serious traumatic brain injuries. we don't know how he's being treated. we're waiting for more information on that, and the woman who he was with has some minor injuries. there was a security guard, a woman on scene who tried to help him
