reporter: erika here's what we , know. police had both joshua hart and brittany smith in custody just a few days before the murder for stealing a car. before the murder. last week 95-year-old thomas harty found dead in his home, his 75-year-old wife joanna fisher seriously injured. police tell us, as far as they know, the two arrested, who are both from athol, have of no connection to the couple, though they do know east river road well. smith's grandmother lives here, in fact, the car they stole just a few days before the murder belonged to her. we spoke with joanna fisher's son, a retired state trooper. he says he is thankful for all hart and smith are facing several charges, including -- >> we are happy to see the arrest may. we are sorry it went down the way it did. we would have given them the car or any money if they just asked. reporter: hart and smith are facing several charges, including murder, attempted murder, and home invasion. the big question remains why? we hope to learn more at the arraignemt. the two are
