let's discuss what's going on with erin burnett. she's the anchor of erin burnett out front.alking to ceos across the country. what did they say? >> we have a strike team, wolf, of about 20 ceos, some of them entrepreneurs, banks, small companies and some of the biggest industrial companies in the country and they all talked about the jobs number this morning. in terms of their own hiring and this is the interesting thing right now, the 17 have responded so far and 14 of them are hiring right now, three of them are not. so when you actually look, these are big companies, ford, dupont, cisco systems are among the companies hiring. that's positive news, but they do seem, more and more of them a little bit of a stalling in the economy. allen coleman, and she's hiring and doesn't think it feeds more stimulus. i am hiring and this will clearly be a slower recovery, so this will be more negative. this is what happened last summer. you were yoo was the big culprit there and that has a huge effect on u.s. jobs and that could be what we're seeing again. the question is is this just on

cnn's erin burnett is joining us. she's going out front on this story. ng to have to translate what ben bernanke said today to our viewers in plain english because she was speaking in a certain, shall we say, federal reserve language. >> yes, he was. look, bottom line in terms of where the economy is is the fed does not think the u.s. economy is grow as quickly as it thought a few months ago and doesn't think the u.s. economy can create as many jobs. a downgrade in the outlook for growth in the economy. but not enough of a downgrade for the fed and ben bernanke to say, look, we're so afraid that we're going to do some sort of another massive quantitative easing program. what they did, wolf, was extend the program already in place, which has the same goal ben bernanke's been trying to push through all of these creative programs in the last few years, which are lower long-term interest rates. the problem with this is he's already succeeded. i am just looking over here 30-year fixed rate mortgage in this country 3.63%. i mean, it's pretty hard to get rates a

let's go to erin burnett. he painted a dark dismal picture. here is my question for you. on. if it's really that bad, there are steps you could have taken today, and taken today and you didn't take them, right? >> that's right, brooke. there are still more bullets left in the fed's arsenal as we'd like to say. there are still more things that they can do. but i think one way to look at this is to say, look, he did say growth is coming back very gradually. we parse every word of these statements. the last time the fed came out with its statement, it was only gradually. as you say, every ajektive he could have put in there, they put in there. a big bang sort of another round of what we call quantitative easing, he didn't go that far. and i think that's a good thing in the sense that, a, he wants to leave it in case he really needs it, but also even though things are getting worse, he doesn't think that we're at that dire of a strait. so in a sense it's kind of a vote of confidence that things aren't that bad. >> that's the micro. i want to sort of look out macro sort of 20,

cnn anchor, erin burnett, has been following the story. she's joining me now with the report. are you learning? >> it's interesting, obviously these cuts are severe and going to require so many layoffs from the defense area, joe, that by federal law the defense contractors will have to notify people 60 days in advance. of course that means notifying them right before election day. so there is a lot of incentive on both sides of the aisle to delay some of this sequester. there's been a lot of purporting out there that perhaps there's a deal being talked about that maybe in congress they would go ahead and basically kick the can down the road, have the sequester not take effect until early next year, maybe march. we've spent time talking to staffers on the hill. basically it seems there are talks going on right now that would essentially push this out a little bit. but, joe, i think the real problem with that is going to be republicans say, oh, yeah, we're talking about this. we're going to extend the bush tax cuts and get rid of the sequester. democrats going, wait a minute. yo
