it was during your program, state of the union, trump tweeted out why is george pataki allowed on the debate stage? i know you didn't make up the rules, didn't make up the criteria. what do you make of trump going after other candidates like this, challenging their legitimacy. our argument would be the more candidates the better, because then you hear more voices. >> first of all, george pataki is not on the main debate stage. he is on the undercard debate stage with the three other candidates that did not make the cutoff for the main debate. so that's -- he will be on the debate stage, that's true, but he won't be with donald trump. he is not at 0% in the polls. he is at i believe 1% in the polls or whatever the minimum is to make the debate stage. so that's not accurate in terms of qualifying to get on the stage. in all fairness to donald trump, george pataki is attacking donald trump and attacking his legitimacy. george pataki said that he is not going to vote for donald trump and donald trump won't be the nominee. so, in this instance, it appears more like donald trump is firing b

also interesting that george pataki tangled with santorum on the rule of law that santorum didn't seemo know or that bobby jindal didn't seem to know that justice kennedy was a reagan nominee and appointee to the supreme court clearly an error that jake tapper corrected him on. >> you're a good reporter. can you remember these republicans complaining when we had a 5-4 decision in bush versus gore in 2000? weren't too many heads shaking we can't have that in this country. these guys change their mind about the supreme court on the last decision. what did you make of lindsey graham talking about his predecessor having four kids after 67 and that was at least kicking in and helping social security. your thoughts. >> that was one of his good lines during the immigration section of the debate which i thought was a very good exchange and lindsey graham saying for demographic reasons going forward we need immigration. we need young workers coming in to support those baby boomers who are about to retire. >> let's watch that. >> i thought that was very good. i thought the other person who i tho

people said he was a republican who doesn't like george pataki.he's too conservative for the state. soldier but on the other hand, i was talking early winter coat on a farm you can get the best crop and hurricane comes along and you pick yourself up and go forward anyway. that's what we did. we picked ourselves up and said look, that's what he thinks, but here's what i complete the state and change things. ultimately, i made the case, thought the fight and win. that's what i hope to do. i was way behind in the polls against mario cuomo in a democratidemocratic state. i understand i am way behind in the polls in the republican side now but there are a lot of serious issues facing this country. i know i have the ability to resolve those issues, working as a conservative republican but with the democrats as well. i hope that people as the election gets closer takes a look inside pataki is the right guy aspect in that race the last week and have come last two weeks they began to turn in your favor. what happened transfer in just hard work ? >> guest:

this is a deliberate shot across the bow to donald trump, and asterisk, and lindsey graham, and george pataki, and for example, get out of the way, and let the real fight begin, and in telling donald trump and ben carson, i would argue, these sort of outsider candidates, that you are not leading the r party in the direction that we need to be led to donna's point, and we need to have a serious conversation that we need to have if we want to win this election, because talking about whether you would vote for a muslim for president is or whether carly fiorina is robotic is not the discussion that the republicans want to be having. >> and who do you think is going to be next as far as the dropout is concerned? >> well, if i were scott walker i would have said to bobby jindal and others, you first. and if you want to influence the direction of the party, i would have said is, i am dropping out of the race, and this is who i am behind so that the republicans could win, and if you want to influence where we are going, be bold, and get out there, and say and have influence in direction of the party.

and that's the way it should be in the state legislatures. >> in late 1993, early '94, george pataki challenges governor mario cuomo. what did you see in that race that ultimately led to your election? >> nobody thought i had a chance. i was an outcast in the senate because i had opposed my own party's accommodation of mario cuomo and his liberal policies, but i knew the people wanted to change the direction of the state. i understood new york's government was failing its people. we were dead last in jobs. we were, had the highest taxes, the worst credit rating. we had one of 11 of every man, woman and child in the state on welfare. this was failing. and we were the most dangerous state in america. so, i knew that if i could get my message out there that it was the government that was failing the people, not the people that were failing. that i could have a chance to beat mario cuomo. and that's, by the way, why i'm running for president. because i have that seam sense that the people understand that our government is failing us in washington. and they don't like the partisan imposit

>> well, let's remember that neither bobby jindal nor george pataki were on the main stage last timen the question was asked if they would raise their hands. >> why should that matter? >> well, i'm just saying they didn't do it in public. it matters in that it was a different standard. they didn't commit to doing that in public. the issue, though, is that if you want to get any attention right now, it almost has to be trump v. you. so what we have seen, i think, with pataki, with gendal, who are way down in the polls, is an attempt to get into the game. they want to be part of the trump versus somebody tell anovelo which we the media have been talking about for the last two months. frankly, i think donald trump, who knows tv very well, is very media savvy, was even, you know, more lethal towards these guys by not even dignifying their attacks with a response. he kind of waved them off and said i don't respond to anybody who doesn't have at least 1% in the polls. >> so jeffrey, you mentioned earlier in your discussion, you know donald trump. do you feel like he thought by signing that

george pataki is there on the tall side, or the left side of the stage. he ended up speaking a lot so that was probably good for him, more people heard george pataki's voice tonight than heard in the other parts of his not very impressive campaign. in terms of the guys in the middle, bobby jindal and rick santorum seemed frantic and urgent but they basically stuck to all the same stuff they always say on their campaign speeches, just more of a panicky tone of voice from those two tonight. south carolina lindsey graham, he had been criticized at the last debate for being morose, one republican observer told the "washington post" that in the last debate lindsey graham seemed like someone had "just killed his dog." tonight lindsey graham tried to turn that one around by being the jokester of the kids' table. >> i wasn't the best law student. by the end of this debate it will be the most time i've ever spent in any library.
