of course, trump appointed them in 2017 after appointing james comey. do you expect that to have any effect on agency morale? what is the day today in a situation like that? >> so, historically, -- the fbi has always seen itself as different than every other government agency, partially, because of this history that our directors typically bridge from one of ministries into the next, regardless of political party. that history, that assumption on the part of fbi employees was really shattered by the way that jim comey was treated by donald trump in his first administration. nevertheless, the president has the authority to terminate the fbi director anytime he wants, despite the 10 year term that the fbi director serves four. i am one of these people , i always try to take donald trump as his word, and he has said repeatedly, terrible things about chris ray. i think it is entirely likely that he will eliminate or fire chris wray if chris is still on the job when donald trump becomes president. i think it is unlikely that director wray will get to finish

independent leadership in in the fbi and that really that idea was shattered when donald trump fired james comey um, so the idea that he's now going to come in and likely fire the person he replaced, jim comey with is not surprising for donald trump, but it's quite surprising for the fbi. it's the sort of thing that really changes the nature of the organization and really changes the way that the employees think of themselves and their place in the washington kind of bureaucracy. and their independence. so now we think about who he's going to put in that job and that question of independence is crucial from my perspective. for instance mike rogers is someone who would make a logical and reasonable, uh, fbi director may not agree with him on everything, but he certainly has the background, the connection to the organization as a former fbi agent, he is someone deeply familiar with intelligence matters, has proven himself reliable and trustworthy in handling that kash patel is kind of the polar opposite. he is someone who has little to no experience in an organization or a leadership position of a

trump actually interviewed you after he fired the last fbi director, james comey, in 2017.t was that like? and what do you expect this process to be like well, i think the process this time around will be better organized because he's been through the process before. >> obviously, i would say it was a little bit disorganized previously with just a number of names coming frankly out of the blue. and then a couple weeks later, my name surfaced and and then, yes i followed up and talking with the then attorney general, jeff sessions, and then a week later, meeting with president trump and interviewing with him and and it was, um, let's just say very, very interesting time in the oval office there where i briefed prior presidents, dozens and dozens of times. and this was the most interesting time so i think what they're looking for is somebody who can not only protect the american people because obviously that's the fbi director's job. and leading the the men and women of the fbi to uphold and defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. and if the fbi dir

the substance of donald trump's plea to james comey to let it go, all of this politicking in the transitionmusk is at the center of this, he was in the room when trump spoke to zelenskyy and he was put on the phone with him, in this instance, how much was musk briefed on previous contact between the iranians and the americans, did he go into that meeting aware of what had been said beforehand and what the intelligence community would be looking out for? did he leave the iranians with any sense that there might be a change of future policy or not? what did the iranians take away from that meeting, there is a whole host of questions that i imagine anyone who is an analyst at the cia would love to put to mr. musk it also would have loved to brief him beforehand. just the very fact of this meeting elevates the iranians status, just as musk goes and finds him in new york and goes to have lunch with him, sort of legitimizes the iranian government, so there's a bunch of questions and i imagine that iranian opposition would have as well, but we don't know the answer and that is why this is so unort
