jeff hager spoke with forest rangers today who are still monitoring one such fire in joplin. >> reporter: rangers and firefighters stopped the fire which scorched 18-acres in joppa but their work is far from over. >> you'll see smoke, things like that. right now it's all interior. our rangers will be back daily checking to make sure there's nothing on the fire line that could stoke up and start the fire again oar are within the last 48 hours this fishings coupled with separate fires in recount recount -- anne arundel and cecil counties, rangers point to a similar fire that broke out in new jersey monday as further evidence people need to heed the national weather service's red flag warning and refrain from outdoor burning of any kind at least for now. fueled by 40-mile-an-hour winds, this fire spread to 1,000 acres. >> right now we're encouraging people not to do age outdoor burning at all. it's too dry and too windy. just be careful with other sources whether you're doing that outdoor cookout. make sure it's in a safe area that it's not over fuels that are easily going to ignite. >> rep

abc2's jeff hager has a caution from fire officials. >> reporter: the largest fire in harford county is contained but it's still burning. fire officials said people should still refrain from burning. they are returning daily to put out hot spots. they liken the red flag warning to tornado or hurricane warnings and encouraging people to hold off on their backyard barbecues at least for now. >> the biggest thing that will help us is rainfall. even if we get a little bit of rain, that's not going to curtail the conditions. it's still going to be dry. we need a good soaking rain that lasts over a day or two. >> reporter: the state fire supervise said the conditions in maryland are like throws in new jersey. a wildfire spread across 1,000 acres. each spring and fall maryland averages 500 wildfires that burn about 400 acres, so people should take this threat seriously. >> fire officials are also asking to us use extreme caution when discarding cigarettes, operating outdoor grills or anything else using an open flame. >>> if it couldn't be use at least it's a group of people you're happy to

jeff hager has the details. >> you can call it the gauntlet, that stretch that feeds into route 50 just before cars have to move right. you have a recipe for disaster. >> reporter: every time an officer pulls over they're risk their life. that was the case when the officer attempted to stop a car and it braked to a stop. the officer instructed the driver to move to the shoulder. the toyota celica came around that curve and slowed down when it saw the flashing lights but the car behind it did not. >> at that point the celica was struck from the rear. that vehicle struck the celica, that hit the officer who was attempting to avoid that collision. >> the ac cow a still struck another car and ended up in the guardrail. the officer later identified as corporal cameron mont suffered injuries to his lower extreme ties and were taken to the shock trauma center. this underscores the heightened danger of some of their most routine duties -- policing our roads. >> many officers are killed on roadways. this is indicative of how dangerous it is and then sustained serious injuries from a vehicle. >>
