andrea, back to you. >> jessica doyle reporting live from palmer park, maryland. as jessica said, officer morris is the first prince george's county police officer to die in the line of duty in more than two years. corporal thomas jensen died in march 2010, ten days after crashing his car. he was responding to a call when his patrol car hit a patch of ice in college park. jensen had served on the prince george's county force for more than five years. >>> we are continuing to follow breaking news this morning of that fatal train derailment in howard county, maryland this morning. the csx train was running by mulligan hill lane which is just south of main street in ellicott city when it derailed. this is what it looked like just a short time ago. these are pictures from the scene. two bystanders were killed. howard county executive ken ulman says 23 cars out of the 8 80-car train derailed spilling coal everywhere. cranes are there now starting to resome of those rail cars albeit slowly. we're going to stay on the story throughout the day and you can watch it on wusa

jessica doyle is live at police headquarters in palmer park with the latest on the story. good morning, jess. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. this is a huge loss for the prince george's county police department. they are mourning the loss of one of their own. he is officer adrian morris, just 23 years old, on the police force for just two years. the officer lost his life after a police chase yesterday. two prince george's county police officers were alerted to a car that may have been involved in an attempted car break-in at a gas station earlier in the day. they were investigating. they pursued the suspect in their cruiser. but then the police car went off the road on 95 south landing in a ditch. witnesses say the alleged suspect may have tried to run the police officers off the road. officer morris was ejected from the vehicle. he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. >> this job is not an easy job by any means. and it's dangerous in everything that we do just about. but these officers were dedicated to doing their duty and that's what they were doing

. >> jessica doyle is watching your money. what makes us unhay happy? >> people love to complain. >> there are a host of new scams out there. there are the tried and true things that get under our skin. we have got a lot of complaining. the consumer federation of america is out with its annual top ten complaints. this comes from 38 agencies nearly 290,000 complaints for 2011. >> the kinds of transactions that consumerseth make every day like problems with retail stores or problems involving enough money that it is worth complaining. >> reporter: here are the top five categories of consumer complaints. number one autos, customer shopping for cars or going in for repairs were sold lemons and were shown false advertising. number two, disputes over credit card billing and fees mortgage related fraud, predatory lending and abuse of debt collectors. number three we have home improvement and construction companies. that didn't finish the job or they performed shoddy work. those were followed by complaints about retail sales and utilities. word to the wise here

jessica doyle is watching your money. >> she is. wall street is doing well but the question is why because we've heard bad news all over the place. >> we're going to start by taking a look at the s&p 500 which is one of the broadest measures of wall street as opposed to the dow jones industrial average which is made up of just 30 blue chips. it's the s&p that has gotten so many people talking lately. it's rallied for the past six weeks. on tuesday it hit its highest level in four years. but this market is in a very precarious spot. on one side you've -- you have stocks rising because there's the belief that world governments are prepared to step in if economic conditions get too bad, including here in the u.s. and companies have been turning in profits that haven't been as bad as some had been expecting. certainly not the greatest reasons to be buying stock. at the same time we have trading volume that hasn't been this low since september 2007. simply speaking, there aren't as many people investing nowadays. financial experts are sa

. >> good morning, jessica doyle. >> good morning to you. investors are focused in on the job market. today we're going to find out how many americans applied for unemployment benefits. the anybodies are due out later -- the numbers are due out later this morning. we'll get the monthly unemployment report. economists expect to see a slight uptick in jobs but not enough to lower the unemployment rate at 8.2%. the federal reserve acknowledges job growth is weak but after a two-day meeting, policymakers took no new steps to boost the economy. wall street was hoping for new economic stimulus from the feds so stocks dipped after that announcement. checking the numbers the dow stands this morning at 12,971 after dropping more than 32 points. the nasdaq lost 19 and the s&p 500 was down by 4. >>> the new york stock exchange says it is investigating a series offer rig trades -- of irregular trades b. 140 stocks were hit with a wave of volatile trading when the markets opened. night capital group admits it had a, quote, technical issue that affected t

jessica doyle is off but we do have the headlines for you. will the fed change interest rates? wall street will be watching for that this week. the beige book comes out and that's when the federal report sums up the economic conditions across the country and the fed uses that information to set the interest rates. ben bernanke will speak at a conference in wyoming on friday. investors are going to look to see if he says anything about the feds stimulating the economy. >>> stock market flat tuesday. the dow dropped 22 points. nasdaq was up 4. s&p 500 was down one. >>> the obama administration finalized its new rules on the mileage standards for the auto industry. the regulations require cars and trucks to nearly double their fuel efficiency over the next 13 years. the new cars and trucks will have to average 54 miles per gallon. again, this is over 13 years. that's frup 28 miles a gal -- up from 28 miles a gallon last year. it will save families $1.7 trillion in fuel costs. >>> 4:43. the new smart meters for taxis must be installed in all district cabs. >> we'll have more on the

jessica doyle is off today. here are the headlines. wall street is waiting for the latest read on whether americans are feeling better about the economy. later this morning, the conference board releases its consumer confidence survey. it could signal whether shoppers will be comfortable spending more in the near term which would provide fuel to the economy. we'll also get the latest snapshot on the housing market. the s&p index will show the latest changes in the value of residential real estate. the survey has shown three strong gains in a row which could mean the housing market is finally on the mend. >>> looking at the trading numbers, the dow lost 33 points monday. the nasdaq added three. the s&p dropped less than a point. >>> apple was one of the day's big winners. its stock shot higher after the company won a legal dispute with samsung. now it's pushing to take that victory even further. apple filed court papers yesterday asking for a ban on sales of eight samsung products in the u.s. the list includes the galaxy x s4g sportphon

jessica doyle is off today but we're still watching your money and isaac is already having an impact. can expect to see a spike in gas prices over the next few days. oil refineries in the gulf are shutting down ahead of the storm. the gulf processes 44% of crude oil in the united states so a prolonged shutdown could have a huge impact. energy experts hope that's not the case. >> as long as there's no significant flooding that could do longer lasting damage, refineries could be back up and running again, too, probably over the course of one or not more than two weeks. >> this is where gas prices are this morning. in the d.c. metro area aaa says regular grade averages $3.74 a gallon, up 3 cents in a week and up 23 cents in a month. nationwide the average sits at $3.76 a gal long. >>> there may be a positive impact if isaac and the rain it could bring to the south and midwest. the storm will bring rain to areas hit hard by the drought this year. that would benefit winter crops like wheat. it could help keep grocery prices in check for all of us. >>> es 6.-- $6.38 right now. oprah's show
