ktvu's kraig debro is there now in people's park with the latest on what's going on. kraig. reporter: good morning, david. we see some movement um there. mucado, are you there? he is there. we're going to talk to you in just a minute. let me tell me what we're doing out here. he tells a local paper he's been out here since monday. that's exactly what u.c. berkeley police told me about an hour ago. he's used tree sitting as a form of civil disobedience, but i'm not talking to the kind that took place at memorial stadium. the man up there now told the daily cal that his name is muchado. we haven't talked to him yet except for a couple of seconds ago, you saw that. he says he's protesting the plight of the homeless people in berkeley. where you see homeless people there, they're sleeping on the sidewalk next to parking meters, sleeping bags, blankets, some less than that. the people tree sitting here have had different reasons for their protests. another opposed a plan to develop the park. meu chado is awake now. we'll see if we can talk to him and get his reaction later on on

kraig debro joins us now. he's in fairfield. t the last 30 minutes, kraig, you talked with family members. >> i did. the apartment is back down that way around the corner. you won't be able to see it. but i just spoke to the mother of the homicide victim on wednesday and -- i got details how a mother found her son dead on sunday night. i spoke to the cousin and they said -- they say that enis johnson junior, this is him right here, he was going to go to work at a wall -- walmart and his mother came home from her job in -- from -- about 11:00. she would usually go in and wake him up. when she went in there, she found him dead. he died from a result of the wounds. fairfield police say johnson's parents' mom called them at 11:15 on wednesday night and when police arrived wednesday night, they found johnson dead. he was killed by gunshots. we spoke to a downstairs neighbor. they say he knew nothing. >> it was not random. i guess he knew the person. i don't know if that's true or not. >> the management at the apartment complex also le

kraig debro has more on this financial crisis, craig?n the city manager was here in downtown san jose, she had something to say to city council members but this was a problem they faced earlier this year and it had to do with balancing the budget, tax increases or do something to their pensions to massage that or get the costs down. according to the city manager they are considering closing all the branch libraries even laying off some park rangers. you may recall earlier this year they have 10 unions to agree to a course the board pay cuts and not only that, up to 500 people were laid off or their jobs were not replaced when people retired. they are not facing that dire situation this fall, however when they started planning their 2012 / 2013 fiscal year, they are delaying the opening of four other libraries and there is even talk of laying off some crossing guards at schools. we want to go to school and get reaction from one of those guards. reporting live kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. >>> managers of the golden gate bridge recreati

ktvu's kraig debro joins us live from oakland, where, kraig, you've learned that two burned bodies found in an apartment may be victims of murder. >> reporter: yeah. that's what police are looking at right now. i want to take you up to the building. it's at coolidge, about half a mile west of the 580 freeway. the man who owns a business downstairs, just went upstairs. he didn't want to talk. this all happened around 1:00 a.m. on sunday morning. police got here and according to pipe i got here -- according to people who got here this morning, huge flames shooting out of the second floor. now that there's daylight, you can see the origin of the fire is in that second-floor apartment. exactly where we're not sure. there is aalso a neighbor that live -- there's also a neighbor that lives in the back. after the victims were pulled out, a man and a woman, i talked to the neighbor next door and she said one of her neighbors actually tried to put out a fire. >> the back neighbor here, he was the one yelling fire! fire! he had his fire extinguisher and he was rubbing upthe stairs and -- running u

kraig debro tells us about a new initiative to reduce crime. >> reporter: i'm standing at a gas station at west grand and market. you can see me clearly through the fluorescent lighting. over at the street the light is dimmer. urning orange, yellow -- orange, yellow in common. things aren't as visible as they were at the gas station. there have been multiple studies that the more lighting you have, the less crime in an area. bad economy has a lot to do with it. in this case there is a statewide law that mandates a reduction in the intensity of street lighting. it was passed in 2002. the idea was to save money and keep lights from being diffused and blocking views. since that happened cities have saved money but some people say that brought on an increase in crime in the areas where the lighting was dimmed. we will get a chance to talk to the minister and see what he is asking the state to do. kraig debro, ktvu news. >>> fbi statistics show there were 15 violent crimes for every 1,000 people, the most 0 for any bay area -- the most for any bay area city. the fbi claims much of the crime

kraig debro has the details of what happened out there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. the oakland police are detaining two people in connection with a chp initiated pursuit that began on high street and ended up here at 13th and chatam. the intersection behind me. it's actually chat -- you can clearly see as the headlights end up on the ground all of the debris left behind. the chp spotted this black american made vehicle traveling northbound on high street about 1:00 in the morning at a high rate of speed. chp gave chase. chp then called opd about eight minutes after 1:00. at that time they were investigating a shooting at 45th and international reported at 1:00 a.m.. police recovered a weapon and say it may have been thrown from this wrecked vehicle. the proximity of all this is why the police think it may be connected. because high speed is connected with international. they detained a man and woman. they are investigating to see if the weapon was involved in the shooting. the victims injuries are considered nonlife thr

kraig debro is live in san jose to explain why the budget outlook appears so grim. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, tori. a lot of people out here are hoping it's not both of those things, both raises taxes and cutting programs. the city manager has delivered suggestions about how to do this. last may she delivered a similar scenario. now what they are talking about is certainly a lot more drastic. so eliminating all library services. that's one suggestion. not opening four libraries that were scheduled to open until next year. putting that off until next year and also increasing taxes. the mayor has put that forward earlier this year. there was a survey that came out that suggested that citizens in san jose says they are not ready for that. they want to put pension reform on the ballot and that's something that that same survey said they would get behind. there's also talk of cutting park ranger services. libraries is already cut. they are gonna possibly eliminate all library service. right now, libraries are only open 40 hours a week. the head librar
