i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. want to get started with a look at that forecast. we'll get to you in just a bit, mike. cinthia, what are we working with this week? >> quite a lot. let's get you ready, out the door on this beautiful monday morning. looking at mostly clear skies over san francisco, 58 degrees. we'll also do some beautiful skies over downtown san jose. this is indicative of what is to come. we're going to be gradually warming up this week, final days of august. it's the last monday of the month, i want to get you prepared. we're going to see 70s and 80s, deeper into the valleys low 90s, and we'll ramp up temperatures as we go into tuesday and wednesday. i'll track you through all of those temperatures, but for now, mike is tracking a crash in the east bay. >>> we've been watching this for a few minutes, no slowing and no major injuries reported. the surface street, there's a section that is closed until january, there was some storm damage, but everything is moving smoothly, that's not as a result of

're going totart out with a tuy morning. forecas for this meteorologist kari hall has bee tracking what we can expect. >>> it's going to be much cooler today, big drop in temperatures coming after yesterday morning, starting out all clear in san francisco, we can see the fog is back. at times we may see this cloud deck lowering and some mist and drizzle in the forecast throughout the morning. for gilroy, that means we'll start out with clouds and we'll see them linger through 7:00 to 8:00 before it starts to clear, and we'll be in for sunshine the rest of the day. but a slow warming trend, going from mid-50s to upper 60s, and eventually reaching up to 80 in san jose. some spots will see a 10 to 15 degree drop compared to yesterday. this is going to make a huge difference with a breezy wind and a lot of clouds throughout the morning. but it will be a very pleasant afternoon. livermore heads to 82 degrees. that will be one of the warmer spots across the bay area. we'll talk more about the changes ahead, also give you a look at

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get to the breaking news out of florida this morning, the eye of idalia is approaching the area between tampa and tallahassee. first, we want to start with our local microclimate alert. >>> kari, you have been monitoring the red flag warning. >> we do have a high fire danger for the north bay today, especially over the upper elevations above 2,000 feet. this is the mountains in the north bay where we are expecting the winds to really pick up as we go through the next several hours. we're also getting some wildfire smoke coming in, so it's a spare the air alert day. if you have any kind of breathing problem, you might want to limit your time outside. it's also going to be hot, as our valleys reach into the upper 90s and near 100 degrees. but let's talk about where that red flag warning continues, where it did start late last night, these areas shaded in red. that's around calistoga, just to the east of santa rosa, and heading up toward lake county for much of that county

. >> i'm laura garcia. >>> let's start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> we can start out with more humidity, it's been so muggy these past few days. this is the reason why, we still have this low spinning off of the coast. it's drawing in the remnants of what was hilary into the region, and we're still seeing the potential of some isolated showers and thunderstorms. this is a loop of the past 24 hours, so there was a lot of activity yesterday morning, especially in the north bay. and then for the afternoon we saw thunderstorms developing over the central valley into the sira, and now things are quieting down this morning. but we're still feeling the mugginess and it's going to continue throughout today, eventually drying out, and then our temperatures warming up. we're headed for the upper 80s in parts of the tri-valley, into the south county. 81 in novato, and in san francisco it's going to reach 71 degrees. for tomorrow, it's going to continue to heat up. take a look at these highs. this will be

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez in for marcus washington today. cinthia is in for mike, so we'll talk about traffic in a minute. we want to get right to kari. >> i'm going to be slapping your hand, like the person reaching into the pot while you're cooking. it's going to be really nice the next few days and cooler temperatures coming in. as we take a look at the marine layer, those morning clouds covering san jose right now, we're seeing that extending all across the bay area. but when we start out cloudy, we know it's going to be a cooler day and we'll be in the low 60s for the start and continuing to stay in the 60s through about 9:00, then starting to see the sky clearing out as we go into this afternoon. take a look at our afternoon highs. once again, back into the upper 70s and low 80s for much of the south, and for the east bay we're headed for 85 in antioch, oakland will be in the upper 60s. along the coastline, low 60s for half moon bay, with some upper 70s for other parts of the peninsula. so we're going to talk more about this coming up.

. >> i'm laura garcia. thanks for making us a part of your morning. >>> did you see this overnight? we were talking about the lightning spotted early this morning in san jose. this is from our camera overlooking downtown san jose, but you can see it striking in the distance. kari has been monitoring that. you say it's in the central valley as well. >>> it's farther to the east. even though it looked close, the sky was clear all the way up to that point. so you can see lightning in the distance when the sky is mostly clear. but that is really concerning because we are going to see an increased fire danger, even as we look at that same camera this morning. there's still been lightning activity here recently, but once again, it is happening well to the east of us. it's all because of a surge in monsoon moisture. we've seen the showers and thunderstorms, but what's happening this morning is not with any rain. it's with a thunderstorm cloud, but the rain evaporates before it hits the ground. it's very concerning when you talk about it possibly striking some very dry vegetation. so we'll

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia.e'll get to breaking news in just a moment. >>> first let's start with a warning from pg&e. public safety power shutoffs are possible in the north bay. >> forecaster cinthia pimentel is keeping a close eye on the heat. >> we haven't heard about planned safety shutoffs in a while. but on wednesday morning pg&e could cut power to seven california counties. let's take a look at a map they're highlighting in yellow. the areas receiving the warning include napa county and nearby lake county closer to the bay area, but it continues through the north. the big concern is the high winds. it would be the first energy shutoff for the year, and not just pg&e, but cal fire's north bay unit tweeted this out last night, the unit's engine and dozen strike teams are all back tomorrow after battling fires in other parts of the state. cal fire is saying it comes just in time, as the fire weather watch has been issued. just look at this scene yesterday in the santa cruz mountains. crews were able to conta

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we continue to follow that breaking news out of hawaii.the past 90 minutes president biden has officially opened up federal funding to the area impacted by the devastating wildfire. at this hour the number of those confirmed dead stands at 36. officials warn that that number will climb. you see the smoke there. the situation is just devastating not only in term of lives lost, but an island that will never be the same. in addition to the dozens now dead, almost 11,000 customers without power in maui at last check. 134 members of the national guard have been sent to hawaii to assist with the response. just within the hour we received word of a mass evacuation effort now resuming for the town of lahaina. >> we are getting new video of some of the destruction these wildfires have left behind. i want you to take a look at this, piles of rubble, burned-out cars and multiple neighborhoods just burned to the ground as the western side of that island was nearly cut off, but only one highway out. the fire victims are looking back at the frightening

. >> i'm laura garcia. that strike was suspended by union leaders yesterday as negotiations continue. nbc bay area's kris sanchez is outside of san jose city hall as leaders are meeting. what's the latest, kris? >> reporter: well, we saw san jose city workers showing up for work today as scheduled instead of going onto the picket lines because of that agreement that appears to be close between what the city wants and what the union wants. the san jose city council went into closed session just after 9:30 this morning to consider that agreement. no one signed up for public comment, so i think everyone is playing it pretty close to the vest. city negotiators and union leadership were close enough to put a 24-hour pause on the three-day planned strike which was, as you said, supposed to begin at 6:00 this morning. at this point the details of the deal are not public, but we know in terms of salary increases in the next three years, the city and the unions were about 6% apart. in order for this deal to move for
