some serious problems living for people in those issues, this one along kirk avenue and abc2 news linda so has been there and for just a few hours and linda how have things improved since you arrived? >> reporter: they've made a lot of progress. let me show you where we are. we are right behind city college. this is the 2800 block of kirk avenue. where public works crews have been working throughout the night since last night at around 11:00 when this 16-inch main water main broke. you can see this is the hole where it happened. you can see that crack it's about a nine foot crack. that caused this water main to flood the city streets. right now they are pumping out the extra water. they've been able to turn the water off. so that they can get that water down cut off that broken pipe, and replace it with a new one. you can see crews have been out here all morning. the problem that this is causing for area neighbors right around the corner is abbotston street. the 1500 block of abbotston street can this morning we actually talked to two people who lived there who say their basement has been

linda so, abc2 news. >> the headaches continue as we mentioned this is the third break of its kind for baltimore city. another sign of the aging infrastructure returning under the streets. the first happened on light street back on july 16th and going to last another two weeks until the repairs can be fixed. dpw has ripped up the pipes and now laying down new ones. the break caused businesses to lose water for a number of days and also creating a real mess down there. then another, well we had a sinkhole on monument street this one causing a massive, massive sinkhole that widened during the weekend and crews had to first stabilize the sinkhole to keep it from expanding before fixing the pipes or anything else that's wrong underneath. that process could take up to nine days and from there it's unclear just how long it will take to get all of those pipes repaired. this is a scene like we said from that. now for the vitalist on this we're going to lay -- very latest on this we're going to take you to abc2news.com and also the traffic tab. we've got live traffic maps out there alerts for y

linda so has been on the scene throughout the course of the morning, two people are confirmed dead. >> reporter: we spoke with a the stepmother says it was her step daughter killed, on the bridge with her friend, what happened was she is a student at james madison university, about to enter her junior year, about to head off to college next week. elizabeth gnash was on the bridge with a friend, they were taking pictures and sending out tweets, elizabeth's older and younger brother were getting the messages. when the accident ppened they tell us the messages stopped. they came out here to check up and make sure if it was her sister or not. they got confirmation from police. it was her stepdaughter and her friend who were killed on the bridge. right now, the bodies are still along the tracks. we got off the phone with someone, someone in the county executive's office to tell us there is so much coal dutched. the operation is taking a lot longer than they expected. they are hoping to remove the bodies and take them to the medical examiner's office. one of the victims who was a student at

linda so was at the scene moments before 4:30 when we went on the air. >> the family members showed up, the moe, the father, the stepmother and the victim and older brother and younger brother. the victim's name is elizabeth gnash, about to enter her junior year, about to go back to school when this happened. the older brother and younger brother, told us that his sister had been texting, tweeting, taking pictures, up on the bridge with a friend, all the texts, the messages stopped. the brothers came out here and later on they found out that in deed it was their sister who was killed, elizabeth gnash, about to enter her junior year at james madison university. the family distraught, the bodies were removed from the bridge at 3:45 this morning, taken to the medical examiner's office, when we spoke with ken k the county executive, he has been on the scene since this happened. he said it's too early to tell if it's because they were on the bridge that caused the derailment, obviously that's part of the investigation. one thing he said for people who live in the area, you want to avoid mai

linda so is live at the fairgrounds with everything you need to know and linda, a lot of parents need to pay attention, it is becoming fair season. >> reporter: no confirmed cases of swine flu in maryland. with the state fair coming up in a few weeks and several county fairs going on now, health officials want you to be careful. at the howard county fair, they are taking steps to keep people safe, hand washing stations and hand sanitizer around the fairgrounds to use after coming in contact with pigs. the swine supervisor is checking the pigs everyday to make sure they are healthy. the new cases have been reported in hawaii, ohio and indiana, all of the cases were linked to people who either went to or worked with swine at agricultural fairs. it's the same in pigs as humans, fever, redness in eyes and coughing and trouble breathing. >> i am not worried about that. >> reporter: the best thing you can do if you happen to go to a fair is wash hands. don't take food in and around barns. here at the maryland state fair, they plan to have hand washing stations available. linda so, abc2 news

linda so this morning is live in northeast baltimore.i understand when students come back to school they will be walking in to what feels like a new building. >> reporter: brand new and state of the art. the first day of school, the custodial staff arrived to get ready. we are on the site of building that faces the cafeteria. this building has wi-fi, voice over internet phones and the basics it didn't have like air- conditioning and windows for light. it hasn't been renovated since 1951. this entire $28 million project is actually happening in two parts, the first part was the completion of the new building, second renovating the old building. the entire school will house 1200 students making it one of the largest elementary middle schools in the city. coming up at 6:00, the principle will be joining us and later this morning at 8:30, the governor, mayor recallings blake and leaders will be at the school for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official new building here. live in northeast baltimore, linda so, abc2 news. >>> it is

linda so is live on the scene of a officer-involved shooting in baltimore county. she has been out there and i think we will go to linda now. are you with us? >> reporter: we l right. what do you have. >> reporter: let me set the scene. this is the beltway motel and restaurant right off washington boulevard in arbutus near the 695 exit. you can see some police detectives, police cruisers forensic evidence people out here on the second floor there, more detectives. they have the area taped off. what we are hearing is that around 3:40 this morning, police got a call that a naked man with a rifle was shooting out of his window. police arrived and they responded and shots were fired. the man holding the rifle was shot. he was taken to a local hospital. we just got off the phone with baltimore county police, the corporal tells us the gunman is still alive but you can see detectives on the second floor have the area taped off. they are investigating what actually happened here. but what we do know is around 3:40 this morning a man was shooting a gun outside his window an
