let's start with my colleague matt bradley. he is in tel aviv. he's done such a great job covering the effects of this in the region, bridging to bear his experience in iraq as well many as i mention, matt, the threat here from iran is israel could be in the cross sights here. if there is more retaliation. what's the reaction been where you are? >> reporter: well, yeah, david, israel and dubai. dubai, of course, has tons of expatriots, westerners and has about half a million iranians and people of iranian ancestry. that's a strange but powerful target. but here in israel, you know, this is what israelis were kind of expecting, the other foot was going to drop. the iranians, hezbollah, and other proxies for the iranians throughout the region, they have never met an israeli conspiracy theory that they haven't welcomed. so it was a surprise that up until now the iranians and hezbollah hadn't really been making all that many mentions of israel and hadn't seen a lot of israeli hands behind all of this. that changed this morning. we heard from the supre

want to go first to matt bradley, who is in israel. matt, we've seen some attacks on the green zone in baghdad. help us understand how this is reverberating throughout the region and what you're seeing from where you stand. >> obviously, lot of moving parts here, david. we saw on saturday a rocket that was launched into the green zone. there was another one that was launched across the tigress river from the green zone and another three rockets that was launched and they didn't actually penetrate into the base in all three of those targets, no one was struck. no one was injured. it seems as though those attacks while they might be a glimpse of what might be to come from this threat and retaliation from iran, they probably weren't any real level of coordination in terms of having tehran decide how their proxies would attack u.s. interests. this could have been in my estimation more likely just an overzealous fighters in iraq on their own. if we get a retaliation, it would be from tehran and might be coordinated and might come right here

so let's go to matt bradley real quick in tel aviv because i have another additional question about israel's involvement in all this. and, matt, if you can hear me, my question is we heard about the additional failed operation in yemen. is there any word yet if israel also tried to aid the u.s. in that operation? >> no. that's entirely unclear. i mean, what would probably be more likely than israel would be saudi arabia because saudi and the emirates were both close u.s. allies. almost as close as israel and the united states. they're very, very active in saudi arabia. and they've been fighting a war for several years against the houthis, which is an iranian-backed group. may be less identi-- the saudis emirates, if i were to guess, they would be most likely to tip off the u.s. about that. but again, that wasn't a successful operation. nobody was killed in that. and so it didn't work out the same way. maybe the intelligence wasn't as bulletproof as it was in the case of qassem soleimani. >> all right. our thanks to nbc's matt bradley in tel aviv and cal perry in doha, qatar. thank you, guys.

matt bradley is in tel aviv. chris, let me begin with you, if i may. let's talk a little bit about the threat that we just played there or at least the threat that richard engel is reporting about the threats coming out of iran. that iran would use its proxy in lebanon to attack israel. explain to us the.net unanimo d some of the protests that have happened over the last couple weeks in that country. do they have the capability, not just militarily, but politically to drag hlebanon into a war on behalf of iran? >> reporter: according to estimat estimates, hezbollah controls 60% of the country. they have a military believed to be bigger than that. the official lebanese military. both politically and militarily, yes, they are positioned well. also geographicallgeographicall. it's important to note officially iran said they do not want proxies to operate on their behalf. they want a proportionate response to the killing on soleimani. so far, that's what they say they have done. it was a symmetrical attack using conventional weapons on the two american pos

hans nichols is with the president in florida, courtney kube at the pentagon and matt bradley following developments from london. hans, what's the latest we're hearing from the white house? >> reporter: geoff, a couple new developments this hour. number one, the president is answering this criticism at least through the retweet that he didn't read in congressional leaders and suggested they might have tipped off the iranians. he's not directly saying, but suggested they weren't informed for the same reason congressional democrats were informed. quite an explosive allegation. we also have the president seem to be opening up a new front hinting the the government in bagdad, the government in iraq that the u.s. pays billions of dollars, been there a long time, almost a warning not to take any action. there's been some reporting about having a bill in parliament and iraq to have the u.s. troops leave. finally you have the actual legal justification. secretary of state mike pompeo saying this was clearly the doctrine of pre emery self-defense. have a listen to how he put it. >> the american

. >> for more now we're joined by nbc news correspondent matt bradley in tel aviv. matt, with these rockets, eight more today we're aware of. the damage, those who have been killed, what does this say? >> well, actually, richard, no one has been killed. there were eight rockets balad air base north of baghdad. there were four iraqi air force personnel who were injured, two of them were officers is what we're hearing. so this is something that actually has been happening quite a bit lately. we've been hearing about rockets attack, mainly make and model, landing on bases where u.s. soldiers may or may not be. in this particular instance there were no u.s. soldiers at the base at the time but there had been before. it seems as though u.s. troops had been rotating around, making taking evasive action out of concern for just this type of ventiali eventuali eventuality. you mentioned the threats, the head of hezbollah, north of where i am in israel, he also said that he had been speaking with qassem soleimani and soleimani wasn't planning to attack the embassies. he in his

joining me, matt bradley in tel aviv, israel. do we have any sense of who may have launched this rocket attack? >> reporter: it's not entirely clear but this is consistent with previous rocket attacks, especially the make and model of the rocket. remember, this is the type of rocket and this is the type of attack that started all of this a little more than two weeks ago. that's when a rocket attack on an iraqy base that was housing u.s. soldiers ended up killing a u.s. citizen. that's what caused this tit for tat retaliation and ended in the killing of qassem soleimani and brought us to the point where now. it likely is one of those iranian proxies. rockets were landed in the iraqi air base. that was answered by the rockets that the u.s. launched on the iraqi-syrian border. it could be then again or any number of different militia groups backed by the iranians or not in iraq. there are several of them. many of them have representatives within the iraqi government with which the united states is allied. it's all a very awkward bed

joining me is matt bradley in tel aviv. t, it's confusing only because the jcpoa he referred to, joint comprehensive plan of action, the iran deal of 2015, involved a lot of parties. it involved negotiating group, the united nations, the eu. it wasn't a nato specific thing. now he's talking about nato. what's the president talking act? >> reporter: well, the president is reviving a complaint that he's had since before the election back in 2015. he's long-said that nato members don't pay enough into the alliance and are just enjoying the protections of america and other big powers without paying anything. without having to pony up their own militaries and without having to spend more than 3% of their gross national products every year on military spending in fact he's been complaining about this a lot. this is one of the president's habits. when something like this, a new news event comes up, he tucks an old complaint in. that's what you're seeing here. the fact is that nato allies, the request by the president, they get more

nbc foreign correspondent matt bradley joins me now from london, a somewhat dark buckingham palace behinduple have an estimated net worth of what, like 30 to $45 million. where did that money come from and do they stand to lose any of that in the deal just announced yesterday? >> reporter: where is it going, that's the big question. there are two main ways the royal family makes money. that's basically from properties and assets that they own. one of the funds is called the duchy of cornwall. that goes straight to queen elizabeth, which she can distribute to the royal family as she sees fit. that's $20 million a year in dividends. the duchy of lancaster goes to the queen's son prince charles and he can then distribute that to his sons or relatives, however he sees fit. there's a little more than $80 million in taxpayer funding. that goes to the whole royal family, not any specific person. we have to remember, a lot of this wealth is generations old. it's inherited. it's not accounted for, because remember, this whole issue gets to this question, who are the royals? are they representative

retaliate for the death of soleimani, we go to metula, along the border, that's where nbc news' matt bradley is there. what is the threat there as he's bollas live under threat pretty much all the time? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. it's like my colleague cal perry was saying this in the last hour in doha, when you see the israeli military preparing for a spike back. you don't see that on the ground, of course. they're hiding that. the feeling here is normal. you are not seeing troop movement. all of that is behind walls, behind fences, we can assume they're on a higher alert level waiting for some kind of retaliation from right across the border behind me. if the weather were to cooperate, you'd see across this hostile border into lebanon. some of the armed position of hezbollah are not all that far away from where i am standing. within about a mile. close to where i am earlier this year, they discovered several hezbollah tunnels that ran deep under ground that would have aloud he's bhola to come in here in the case of an incursion into israeli territory. we will hear more about that as
