officer michael johnson was a 14-year veteran of the force shot by a mon he was trying to help. officer johnson was 38. kiet do has more from "senter road" with more information. >> reporter: good afternoon. this is the closest that we have been able to get to the scene and if you can see past these cars here, the shooting took place right at that section of brown condominiums right in front of where there's police cars. this is an active scene now going on 17 hours. it's been a long tough tragic day as officers wear black bands over their badges and they are trying to focus on this investigation and at the same time mourn of loss of one of their own. in san jose, the grieving had begun well before sunrise. a long procession of police cars followed the coroner to the morgue. by noontime a collection of flowers began to grow at the police department. during an early-morning press conference the police chief held back tears. >> this is a difficult time for us as a community, department, when officers responded to a call, a welfare check, at that location and were met with gunfire.

scott dunham was found with a 30. 30 caliber high powered rifle, likely the one used to shoot michael johnson. we learned johnson was part of a handful of officers who responded to his top floor apartment on center after his daughter called to report her dad was threatening to kill his wife and himself. police, knowing he may be armed took their rifles out. while some officers set up a perimeter on one part of the apartment, johnson stood several yards from the suspect's balcony where dunham came out to fire the fatal shot. just to show you why the suspect likely had a better vantage personal injury, this is a similar view of what he was looking at. johnson and another officer had their rifles out and were behind their patrol cars when johnson was shot. all officers on duty responded to the scene including others from a nearby agency. officers went through kalim's wall to make sure dunham was no longer a threat. >> you can't force it down somebody's throat to get help. >> reporter: the suspect's family knew he needed help, but several of his neighbors said he was friendly and never showed a s

people have been their respects all day to officer michael johnson who was ambushed last night responding to a call. flags are at half-staff at the state capital and police departments. we start with len ramirez and take us through this shootout scenario. >> reporter: this is where the fatal confrontation happened in front of this apartment building. the apartment the home of the suspect. officers were approaching in this grassy area when they were apparently fired upon by the suspect who was in that second story balcony. police sources tell me that the officer was struck with a 30 ott six rifle struck in the head. arriving officers as backup brought out their assault rifles and fired on the suspect apparently striking him in the head, as well. here's how it sounded on police radio. >> male just came out on to the balcony. >> reporter: the first officers on the scene could see the suspect 57-year-old scott dunham threatening to kill himself. they couldn't have known that dunham was about to fire at them way high-powered rifle. >> officer down officer down. >> officer down officer down. >>
