let's bring in michelle grossman for a quick, closer look at this. how much rain can we expect from these storms? michelle. >> hi there. >> alex. well, we're. >> looking anywhere from a half inch even up to two inches of rain. so right off the bat, this is really good news. we need this rain. we have some mountain snow that will fall as well. could see up to 18in in some spots. but of course we're concerned for the chance of some debris flows, especially in those burn areas and also some localized flooding. let's take a look at radar, because the rain has already begun to fall. love to see this on radar. we have the green. that is where the rain is. right near bakersfield. the blue is showing where the snow is falling, and this will expand and extend down to portions of southern california starting early tonight in the evening hours. and then this area of low pressure is really going to sit and spin over the next several days. so it's going to bring a lot of moisture to this area through monday. this is what it looks like. we have the santa ana winds

i just want to bring in nbc meteorologist michelle grossman joining us. as they say, how cold will it be on monday? >> yeah. hi, andrea. it's going to be cold. and not just your everyday cold. it's winter. we're looking at dangerous chill. we're looking at temperatures well below freezing. it's going to be important to wear lots of layers, kind of cover any exposed skin that you may have. wear them. you know as much layers as scarves and gloves because we are looking at temperatures 20 degrees at 9 a.m. the good news is we're going to have some sunshine. but notice the wind chill. we're going to see the winds pretty gusty and that's going to bring the wind chill down as well. so by 12:00 looking at 22 3:00 21, the temperatures are not going anywhere throughout the day. we're going to remain right around the 20 degree mark. winds gusting up to 25mph with a wind chill of 5 to 10. that's what it feels like to expose skin. that's what it feels like on your body. so we want to keep that in mind as we're out and about. this will be the record coldest record sin

for the latest on those fires, let's go now to meteorologist michelle grossman. t from you? >> hi there ali. >> well, after a bit of a break over the weekend, we're going to start to see those fires really ramping up. i know jay touched upon this and did a really good job explaining what's going to happen, but we're going to see those fires ramping up. >> the fires, excuse me. >> the winds ramping up to 50, 60, even 70mph or so. as a result, 10 million people at risk for red flag warnings from santa clarita to san bernardino, temecula, escondido. we're seeing those winds gusting as we go throughout, especially the later part of today, tuesday and also wednesday. it is bone dry. still, we're looking at relative humidity levels 8 to 15%. now, this was just added by the national weather service. an extreme risk for fire where we're looking at this bright pink color here. places like santa clarita, santa paula, thousand oaks could see that extreme fire risk. we do have a critical fire risk as well. that's in the red. that extends all the way from riverside to temecula

joining us now with a deeper dive into this arctic blast is nbc news meteorologist michelle grossman. i know it's the first major storm of 2025 for much of the country. how much snow are we talking about and where is it going to hit hardest? >> hi there alex. >> we're looking at a pretty sizable snowstorm for many of us. >> also bitterly cold. we are looking at a dangerous cold setting in. not just today. >> tomorrow. >> it's going to stay with us for a few days. >> that makes it more dangerous. >> we're looking at wind chills well below zero. >> some spots 20 below zero is what it's going to feel like. >> and it's a big chunk of the country, not just a little part. >> we're talking 80 million people impacted. >> just taking a quick glance at this map. >> we have so many bitterly cold advisories out there. we have cold advisories, cold watches, excessive cold warnings as well, from glendive to missoula, colby down to dallas, houston, nashville, erie, pennsylvania, and also roanoke. so a big part of the country is going to see this cold weather and it will be cold until further notice.

and joining me now with nbc news meteorologist michelle grossman. be for anyone still making the trek to the inauguration? and is there any concern about ice with this snow? >> yeah. hi there. alex. yeah, we have a couple of things going on here, so it's going to be cold. it's going to be about 20 degrees below what is typical for this time of year. so temperatures in the 20s then the winds are going to be blowing about 25mph. so making it feel like 5 to 10 degrees. and then we're going to have that snow that's falling tomorrow. so that's going to stick to any cold surfaces. and we're going to have snow on the ground on monday. so that's going to be very, very cold. some people are saying maybe bring a little piece of cardboard to stand on to kind of separate your feet from that cold surface, because that's going to be chilly for a couple of hours by 9:00. we're looking at temperatures only in the 20s. that's cold. 12:00 not going very far. we're going to be right around 22. and then look what happens at three. we're actually going to lose a degree.
