our national correspondent miguel almaguer has details tonight. >> i'm going to take a look at your throat here, okay? >> reporter: the new numbers from the cdc are no surprise to this doctor. another patient with flu-like symptoms ending up in her e.r. >> good. >> reporter: so far this flu season, a staggering 41,719 cases have been reported. nearly three times more than this time last season. >> christen got it on the 21st, then jacob got it the 23rd, then i got it the 26th. >> reporter: outside portland, oregon, the frazier family fell like dominoes, four children crippled by the flu. mom, jamie, is still sick today. >> christmas consisted of the ones who were sick wearing surgical masks to open their presents, and then pretty much going back and laying in all of our beds again. >> reporter: it turns out the frazier family was hit with two strains of the flu, even though the kids had their flu shots. last year at this time the outbreak was widespread in 12 states. this year 46. >> we expect it to continue to rise because everyone's been home with their families, now the schools are reop

nbc news national correspondent miguel almaguer has the details. >> reporter: when the fbi raided this home in houston, the kidnapping victim they were trying to rescue was shot and killed. charging documents say the hostage was bound when the extraction team burst in, gunning him down in the chaos. >> i'm having to explain to the family what happened to the victim, and i have no information. >> reporter: police say ulises valladares was home with his 12-year-old son when two men forced their way in, ransacked the house, tied up the boy and left with the victim. claiming to be a part of a mexican drug cartel, the suspects demanded a $20,000 ransom from the victim's family saying they would kill him if they weren't paid. >> it's very scary knowing that would happen right next door. >> reporter: police tracked down the men at a motel, but valladares was tied up in a nearby home being watched by a girlfriend of one of the suspects. the fbi stormed the property and mistakenly killed the hostage. >> the boy's father's not coming home. we failed this child, and that is unfortunate. >> report

nbc's miguel almaguer joins us. hey, miguel. >> reporter: good morning.ctim came out of this phone behind me and was able to use a cell phone to call police. when authorities arrived here at the home, they said 13 children were held against their will by a family chain and bound to beds with padlocks. authorities say their parents, david and louise terpin are the suspects. they ever' been charged with child neglect as well as torture charges. their bail is set at $9 million. they're currently in county jail. authorities say they do have a lawyer though their lawyer has not made a comment. authorities say it's unclear exactly how long the kids were held here in the family home. neighbors say they were rarely seen. when they did see them though all of the children appeared to be emaciated. they were very thin, very pale. naks say they were rarely outside and they often never made eye contact. authorities are still investigating this case. criminal charges will follow. a very sad story from here. hoda, back to you. >> horrifying story. thanks so much, miguel
