in san jose, emma goss, nbc, bay area news. a major san francisco commuter train will return to service this weekend after a five year hiatus. the l taraval muni metro line runs underground from the embarcadero through the twin peaks tunnel and then surfaces on taraval street and ends at the san francisco zoo. the train has been out of service since 2019, as the city worked to repair the line. crews replaced two miles of track. the overhead wires that powered this train and made several improvements to the street. city leaders say the project was the first substantial rebuild in nearly 50 years. this was not just a muni project. this was a major upgrade to an entire corridor that had been neglected for decades. all city agencies banded together to catch up on decades of deferred maintenance and deliver a project that will benefit this neighborhood and san francisco for another 100 years. the train will officially return to service this saturday. i was up in the city today. i did see some sunshine. it warmed up. you can tell acr

here's nbc's ian cull. reporter the upper georges creek is known to overflow during heavy rainstorms, like we saw last year and back in 2017, and each time it threatens to soak homes and some businesses in downtown morgan hill. but today, local leaders announced they've secured $80 million in federal funding to finish the final phase of the upper georges creek flood protection project. they say it will help prevent that flooding and protect more than 1100 homes and 500 businesses in morgan hill. the people who were flood victims deserve that. we just keep going at it until we get the job done. and so we finally did piece together the funds. the creek runs through the city and into san martin, and though it's dry now, it can rise quickly in heavy rainstorm. sometimes we can't get out of the house. it's flooded so bad. mark stratton has lived in his home near the creek for 20 years, and witnessed how bad it can get. they've gotten halfway up our driveway. we're elevated here, up on our house, up on a hill, an

sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. let's turn your attention to a tragic and terrifying shooting in georgia. hundreds of grief stricken residents gathered for a vigil tonight in winder to honor two students and two teachers killed. this morning. it all took place at apalachee high school in winder, which is about an hour east of atlanta. the shooting started shortly right after the school day began. law enforcement swarming the campus, students sheltering in their classrooms. nine people have been hospitalized. a 14 year old student arrested. nbc bay area is not identifying him because he is a minor. everybody was like calling 911 and their moms, and we could still hear like the screaming and shooting outside, and it was just scary. once they encountered the subject, the subject immediately surrendered to these officers and he was taken into custody. he will be charged with murder and he will be tried as an adult. terrifying for students and terrifying for their families. the victims have not been publicly identified y

alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. okay. election day is 46 days away, and among the big issues is prop 36. today, another east bay city leader is backing that prop. antioch mayor lamar hernandez thorpe announced his support of the ballot measure. prop 36 would increase punishments for retail theft and drug crimes. it would also create a new category called treatment mandated felonies. people would undergo drug treatment instead of going to prison. now, several local leaders have already voiced their support of prop 36, including san jose's mayor matt mahan and san francisco's mayor london breed. mayor hernandez thorpe says this measure would have a huge impact on his city. there is a reality that we're grappling with and that is people are stealing. there is no accountability for it and we need to start taking action and that's that. governor newsom has been outspoken against prop 36. he says the measure would be too expensive to implement and would lead to mass incarceration. well, a lot of attention this election year on

bob redell, nbc bay area news. later this afternoon, the man investigators say shot and killed a coworker last friday in a vta bus yard is scheduled to be arraigned. 33 year old bus operator duk ming bui is accused of shooting fellow driver turanogryllus teetee pico boulevard. it happened friday night at the yard on south seventh street in san jose. over the weekend, deputies arrested the suspect at his home. on monday, they laid out some of the allegations suggesting gambling and money owed may have played a role in that shooting. a collection of shut down and shuttered businesses could get new life if the city of san jose's planning commission accepts costco's plan to open up shop there, but neighbors say it will drive traffic and congestion. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us live from the proposed location. with the buzz on the street out there, kris. hi there laura. as you might imagine, there is a lot of buzz on the street here about this proposed costco at this location, and there's no question that costco
