now the tsa is taking responsibility and ending up to noel brennan explains. >> reporter: a typical day at denver international airport. up. but it is moving smoothly. this is not what we saw a couple of weeks ago at the airport. we saw some of the longest security wait times that we have ever seen. up yrds of 2 1/2 hours at d.i.a -- up wards of 2 1/2 hours at dirs. three days after christmas. the security lines peaked. and 9 news wants to know, finally got a response about what y-it happened by the tsa. turns out it didn't happen because of poor communication or bad weather in the midwest but tsa's own starving decisions. we are talking about the night of december 28 and the early morning hours of the 29th. despite the tsa's own estimates of how many passengers there not to add staff overnight. and at one point, it only appeared that there was a single tsa agent checking passengers. and a statement released yesterday, the tsa said quote after further investigation, tsa determined that correct staffing protocols were not followed, at denver international airport overnight. on december 2

noel brennan, really a sobering number. a number of these slides have happened in colorado. >> they sure have. i want to take a look at that map that marty showed us. this is from the colorado avalanche information site. all the yellow shows the down here to the south, it is considerable. last week, all of this map, really all of it was orange. that was a considerable rating last week. that's when we saw two of those deadly slides. now, the first deadly avalanche of the year in colorado, that happened back on january 16th. these are pictures from that slide from the colorado avalanche information center. this happened near st. mary's lake in clear creek county, a climber actually caused this one. was swept down and buried in a lot of snow. days later, two people riding a snowmobile caused an avalanche near crested butte. one of the riders ended up being buried in the snow. he was taken to the hospital, but sadly he died from his injuries as well. now, as we mentioned, this is the deadliest january for avalanches in nearly 2

christmas was, in fact, the fault of the tsa, which initially blamed over factors. 9news reporter noel brennan is live with what we found. good morning, noel. >> reporter: you see the security line behind me at dia this morning filling up a little bit, but this is nothing, if you remember, what we saw here on into the morning of december 29th. we have some video from that period of time. i was actually here at the airport, saw that line stretching all the way from where it typically is in the baggage claim and looping around a few times. the wait times soared up into the two and a half hour mark. a lot of people ended up missing their flights. a lot of frustrated passengers. at one point it appeared only one tsa agent was working to check all of those people's id's and tickets as they passed through security. so here's what we're learning from the tsa. they initially blamed all of this on bad weather in the midwest as well as poor communication from the airlines. but two weeks later, yesterday we learned that they say that it was all their fault. despite their estimates of how many passengers

this moment saved that teen's life. 9news reporter noel brennan is live in parker where there is a memorial for two other teens who died in that same pond. you can see the memorial right here. is on the fence not too far away from where the pond is where those boys were trapped. you can see there are flowers, there are ribbons, there are hearts and messages for those two boys who lost their lives. officer trey biles is that officer who was the first on the scene back in january 14th. he got here just minutes after that 911 call. take a look at this really dramatic video from his body camera. officer biles made his way over to that pond. he saw cole robinson trying to get out of the water without any rescue gear on him, he had to improvise so he grabbed an aspen tree a had been recently been cut down ran to the pond and extended the tree to pull him out. there were no signs of patric lantz or max gantnier at the time. patrick's body was recovered from the water that day. max was rescued but died later. could to help the two other boys. he called cole robinson a hero for making it out of the

seeing the rescue and understanding a lot more about the frantic final moments. 9news reporter noel brennan is live near the pond in parker. noel, police released this body camera video late last night. he had to use whatever he had around him to save the boy? >> reporter: he did, cheryl. first officer on between two and a call. as you said, he didn't have any rescue gear at all. so as he put it, he had to keep an open mind and think quickly to save that teenager that he saw stuck in an icy pond. officer trey biles bodycam starts rolling as he begins to improvise. officer biles makes his way to the icy retention pond with a 15-foot aspen tree. is stuck in the icy water. the officer asks about the other boys. cole holds on as officer biles pulls him to safety. >> i am extremely happy that cole made it out of the water, but, you know, your heart is broken for not being able to help the other two. >> reporter: patrick lance and max get near were in the frigid water too long. their friend. in parker. now, parker police say that they are going to be making some changes after this tragedy. in fac

news reporter -- 9news reporter noel brennan is outside the house. firefighters and neighbors risked their lives to try to save this family. >> that's the story we're hearing. we're on west sanford avenue. you see the home behind me. restoration crews just finished boarding up this house. we have video from a neighbor, some cell phone video that shows what this house looked like when it was fully engulfed in flames. about 7:00 last night, that's when denver fire and west metro fire responded to this house fire. flames were shooting from the roof. we're told it started in the basement and worked its way up. the flames were incredibly powerful. his 40s who had ms was bedridden was not able to get out of his house. his elderly parents were. again, neighbors rushed over to help. several of them, firefighters tried to get everyone inside out safely. when firefighters first got there, they say the flames were so incredibly intense that initially they had to back away. >> at one point the fire was so significant that the firefighters thought that they were

happened last night in a neighborhood adjacent to rangeview high school in aurora. 9news reporter noel brennan has been following this developing story for us. we're still trying to figure out what led up to this shooting. >> police say it was an attempted robbery that happened right before shots range out. it happened right here at the courtyards at buckley apartments. you may still be able to see the police tape crisscrossing here. police say this all started at 7:20 last night. a sheriff deputy was getting out of his car in the parking him, and there was an attempted robbery. shots were exchanged and the deputy was hit multiple times in the chest and stomach. he hit one of the men in the leg. a man who lives nearby, he actually helped that sheriff's deputy until police arrived. >> another guy that was there called 911. i held his head up. we put pressure on his wounds and he said it hurt. it hurt. where the -- is everybody. i said there's people on the way way. >> police searched from the air suspects. they blocked off entire neighborhoods and put range high school on lockdown. there was a
