mike cronin is live in portsmouth tonight with more. reporter: this is the first major part of the sarah long bridge to be remove and that's a milestone for this project. let me get out of the way so you can see what crews are doing right now. they are making final preparations on the bridge and bridge. the piece that's being removed weighs 2 million pounds and is 250 feet long, departments of transportation from new hampshire and maine are removing the ends of the bridge's lift span. then the tide will do the rest to move it off the bearing sometime between 6:00 and 7:00 tonight. that piece of the bridge will then be floated to the state peer around 8:00. the center span removal will make way for the new 158 millio kittery, maine. and on any given day there are about 100 to 150 people working on this project. officials hope to open the new bridge next september. this of course is a complicated process and safety is their number one concern. coming up at 6:00 we're going to hear from an official from d.o.t. to further explain just how t
