ktvu's rob roth spoke with one man today who says this new law will help him finally put his past behind, same name as the retired general, but with a completely different story. powell was convicted of felony drug possession during the height of the crack epidemic in 1989 when he was 18 years old. he served some of his 8 month stretch at san quentin prison. as a convicted felon, he said getting a decent job was impossible. >> when you have felonies on your record, nobody trusts you. nobody wants anything to do with you. you're not a real human being anymore. >> reporter: after 25 years, that felon label is about to disappear. under recently passed proposition 47, californians convicted of drug possession and many other nonviolent, low level crimes can ask a judge to have their convictions reduced to misdemeanors. that's a big difference. powell's public defender told him the news. >> he cried a little. >> to get that taken away, that could actually almost be considered being accepted back into normal society. >> reporter: powell is one of an estimated 40,000 convicted felons in californ
