san jose has never been like that. i was born and raised here. >> and authorities say gangs are to blame. >> another violent night in san jose continuing the recent crime surge in the city. tonight a man was found stabbed to death in a supermarket. that brings the number of murders in san jose this year to 31. there have been six murders and 5 nonfatal shootings in just over a week. kate thompson is live in san jose tonight at the safeway supermarket where police are still investigating. >> reporter: a man in his 20s died in the safeway behind me. we are at the mount pleasant shopping center in san jose. let's go to the video from earlier in the evening. the victim suffered from at least one stab wound. paramedics were called to the scene at 8:40. when they arrived, they had gotten a call that there was a man convulsing in one of the isles, he later died on the scene. they don't know whether the man was stabbed inside the supermarket or wandered into the supermarket after he was stabbeded. police are not saying -- stab

so will san jose police chief chris moore. everyone taking part in a prayer vigil outside san jose city hall. it will happen tonight. people will be gathering to bring attention to a recent rise in murders in this city. 33 homicides so far this year in san jose. and the recent spike in killings over the past couple of weeks has been fueled in part by what police are calling a bang gar if he is on pace for a record setting homicide. now the community is stepping up. >> save our streets. save our children. >> reporter: over the weekend the community group black berets held a six mile long march for peace. they say neighbors have to work toward a solution to reduce the violence. the group says thatly planning future antiviolence events. in the meantime san jose police are doing nor research to deal with the violence. they are allocating $800,000 to pay for a special unit to look into the violence. it will all happen in front of city hall 7:00 p.m. tonight. live this morning in san jose alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >>> if you

yes, in the past several hours another man has been shot here in san jose, officers found this person with at least one gunshot wound, around 9:00 last night on the 1600 block of east san antonio street. last report his injuries are possibly life threatening. no arrests. if you look at what happened since monday, last monday, there has been a lot of violence, this map shows the location of where four people were murdered over the past week. monday, a man was shot in his car. at charles street and oakland road. later that day a man killed a woman with a samurai sword outside a walgreen's. a vigil planned for her tonight. a 21-year-old man was shot that day, he died wednesday. and then yesterday morning another man was shot and killed. that taking place near south winchester. that's four homicides, doesn't include other crimes in which people were seriously hurt. >> the gangs are getting ridiculous out here. >> i don't want to be walking around wearing the wrong colors. i threw away my blue and red shirts. i don't want to take no risks. >> reporter: police are looking into whether some

also a rash of violence is prompting san jose's top cop to take action. coming up, the big change coming to the streets of san jose. >>> good morning. thanks for being with us. i'm marla tellez. jon kelly has the morning off. we begin with gunfire on the streets of manhattan where an ordinary morning in new york city turns tragic. two people are dead and at least nine others injured after officials say a man upset about being laid off shot and killed his former office manager right in front of the empire state building. police say 58-year-old jeffrey johnson walked up to his former colleague just after 9:00 this morning and shot him in the head. he tried to take off but ended up in a chaotic showdown with police on fifth avenue. johnson was shot and killed and several were hurt, some inadvertently by police gunfire. those people are expected to arrive. mayor michael bloomberg says the shooting is a reminder that although new york is the safest big city in the country, it's not immune to senseless gun violence. >> i ask everyone to keep the victims in thei
