sanjay gupta is here with more. so sanjay, walk us through the findings? of three teenagers, so i pay close attention to this. when you look at the findings, people have a lot of speculation of how much usage is going on. what they found was that for 11 to 17 years olds on average, about 4 1/2 hours a day of usage. 16% used it for two hours and 13% used it for nine hours or month. so for a fair amount. and the point about the notifications. on average people got about 237 notifications aday so which they responded to a quarter of them. about 46 notifications. which means that four times an hour for 12 hours, boris, they are being diverted. they're attention is being diverted from whatever they're doing. if you're working on your device and controlling it, that is one thing. but when you start getting bombarded with notifications. >> you know the brain and you've been doing reporting about specifically the issue of americans and tech use, on phone and social media, how concerning is the impact that this is happening on people? >> well, you know, the surgeon

sanjay gupta.t senator mcconnell. >> so dr. brian monahan basically looked at some of the things that were most likely to cause episodes like this, freezing episodes. and he sent a letter directly to senator mcconnell, basically saying this. there is no evidence, that there is a seizure disorder that you've have experienced known as a tia which is a transient ischemic attack, sometimes known as many strokes, or something like that movement disorder, such as parkinson's. so he basically said, based on the various tests and stuff he had done, there was no evidence of those things. he didn't say what it was other than light-headedness, which, again, it's pretty hard to reconcile with those types of freezing episodes. pretty brief letter. he did say at the end that the senator should continue his current treatment protocol for the concussion he suffered back in march. but again, he did not say what that treatment protocol was. >> do we know more about the tests the doctor said the senator underwent? be

sanjay gupta. fact that i can't even tell you the last time i got tested. >> yeah, it is challenging. some of this is anecdotal. a lot of people may have had it themselves or hearing that more often. but to your point, it is hard to validate because year not doing as much testing. a lot of the testing is at home. not being reported. so it makes it challenging. one of the things that we've talked about for a couple of years no you is looking at more reliable metrics such as hospitalizations. you just mentioned it. but let's take a look there. if you look at where the hospitalizations are over the past several months now and compared to this point last year, very far right is where we are. so it is much lower, half of where it was around this time last year, but it is ticking up. so, there is a trend up. it is not a surge per se, but it is trending up. another indicator, wastewater. so this is basically looking at wastewater all over the country and trying to figure out how much covid, how much virus

sanjay gupta. he's also cnn's chief medical correspondent.cian, knowing what you know because it's your life's work about how the brain works, what does it tell you about what is happening? >> the letter does hit a lot of important notes. there was a level of concern going back to august 30th at that second episode, where the level of concern is that going to get a brain mri, an eeg and have consultations with four different neurorogss. think about that that's a high level of concern to go from saying we think this is just light headedness, we're going to chase this down. it shows the level of concern. that's good. you want to make sure you're figuring out what is causing this. what was happening, the freezing episodes warranted enough concern to say, let's look at the possibility of are they some sort of tias, which are mini strokes, is this a seizure of some sort, a movement disorder. medicine often works from the mantra of prepare for the worst, hope for the best. so you want to rule out, if you will, the worst things first. and those are

. >> abc seven news meteorologist sanjay patel is tracking it all for sandy. when will air quality actually improve? dan >> this weekend. we're going to notice that improvement. and alma, let's take a look at live pictures from our tower cameras that heavy smoke is still visible from vollmer peak. and you will notice from mount tam, san jose's a bit hazy, but exploratorium cameras showing you that sea breeze is bringing in some blue sky, fresher air from mount tam. you can certainly see the combination of the smoke and the low clouds. so we do have that spare the air alert extended through tomorrow as unhealthy air quality is still lingering so poor for today, moderate to poor tomorrow. and as we take a look at the air quality, the sensors right now will show you, most areas are in the yellow, which is moderate. it is poor for sensitive groups in the north bay and the east bay. and you will notice parts of the north bay starting to see green, which is good air quality, even if it is temporary. tsay so tonight we're going to keep that haze and smoke around this

cnn's chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta is plains. >> it's hard to say whether or not we're inertainly there's been a lot of anecdotal reports. people more likely to know somebody who might have covid or may have had covid themselves. but admittedly, this is hard to validate. because there's just not as much testing being done overall, and a lot of the testing happening is happening at home and not reported. it's hard to get those numbers. one of the things that we paid attention to throughout the pandemic is hospitalizations and hospitalizations have gone up a bit, take a look. about 15,000 more hospitalizations this past week as compared to the week before that. so the numbers are trending in that direction, but at the same time, it's about half overall of what it was at this time last year. so you get the idea, it's difficult to sort of read into this too much. another metric we pay attention to is how much virus is in wastewater. this is sort of a general look, a sort of broad look at how much virus is out there. and we see that the numbers have gone up again over the last

and of course abc7 news meteorologist sanjay patel is tracking the conditions. sandy the weekend is upon us. >> any relief in sight here? >> we will get some relief on sunday. okay dan and larry, let me show you a live picture right now. i know it's really hard to breathe out there and burning eyes, scratchy throat, all those things. the view from downtown oakland, from emeryville, camera pretty much is a hazy, smoky view you extended. is that spare the air alert because the poor air quality for parts of the bay area is going to hang around tomorrow. but you will notice it's moderate elsewhere and then sunday we are looking at good air quality across our entire region in right now in the good to moderate category. that's not going to last very long. the smoke will settle overnight tonight. so as we look at the smoke forecast, 7:00 tonight, we're still dealing with it 7:10 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, we still have some smoke and haze and then late tomorrow night into sunday, we finally start to see a break as the onshore winds ramp up. so it's not so much tomorrow,

abc7 news meteorologist sanjay patel here. what's what's going to be like elsewhere in the state as we head into this holiday weekend? a very different aren't larry and karina as we take a look at live doppler 7 right now, you will notice it is just wet up in northern california and the sierra nevada. thunderstorms right now flaring up in the northern california mountains. they also have stormy weather down in the deserts in southern california. so if you are traveling, let me show you the forecast. 64 degrees in tahoe, 80 at yosemite, looking at tahoe with thunderstorms and up around eureka, 66 degrees. los angeles, 79 degrees. so if you are traveling, keep that in mind. and a live view from zephyr cove, where it's cloudy. tahoe is reporting light rain right now, saturday and sunday, you're going to have thunderstorms gusty winds, showers, temperatures cool. you'll notice 60s, 50s. and then monday, labor day will turn things around. so if you're heading up there, there will be plenty of sun both days and warmer weather. i'll

>> let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sanjay patel for a look at the forecast. sandhya >> yeah, and dan and karina, this is beneficial rain that we are expecting. i want to show you live doppler seven right now because we did have some showers move through parts of lake and mendocino counties, just a short time ago. those showers have not been heavy, but as we just heard from the fire crews, definitely beneficial and welcome rain. any rain that we get around crescent city, eureka, some places are picking up close to two inches of rain in the last 24 hours. it's an atmospheric river that's pounding the pacific northwest. we're just getting the back end of this cold front. and so it's not going to amount to a whole lot, but it will deposit much needed moisture into the vegetation. it's also prompted a high surf advisory, which is for tomorrow between 5 a.m. to 11 p.m, up to 20 footers for the steep sloped beaches means dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. watch from far as we go hour by hour, you will notice those scattered showers while you're sleeping at 3
