senator shaheen is a nice person. i respect her greatly, but since going to washington, she's lost her independence. she's voting with the president 99% of the time. and george, you asked what i'll do. i'll be that independent senator for the people of new hampshire. i will bring back that independent spirit, fighting for our new hampshire advantage. fighting for our rights and freedoms. that's what's missing. i want to be there to make sure i can bridge that gap. >> senator shaheen? >> yes, i think we need to change the rules of the senate. i don't think we should allow one person to hold things up in the senate. and that's what my opponent did when he was in washington. he voted for 44 filibusters. that's more than we had in this country in the whole 50 years 2009 1917 and 1968. he also -- i sponsored twice as many bipartisan bills as he has in the senate. and i believe we've got to work across the aisle. most importantly, i believe we need a senator from new hampshire who's going to work for new hampshire. who's go

jeanne shaheen will be reelected.nator from the state of new hampshire defeating scott brown, the republican. the former senator from massachusetts. another big win for the democrats tonight. they desperately needed it to maintain this seat in new hampshire if they have any hope left of being the majority in the unit senate. so jeanne shaheen, we project will be the winner. let's go back to john king to take a little analysis of what happened in new hampshire. the democrats desperately needed this win. they are going to get this win. >> familiarity with her days in governor. she had bumper stickers, i'm jeanie, vote for jeanie. all people could see was an obama drag in the state. a lot of retail politicking. but coming up short in that state. the margin tells you something. jeanne shaheen is a popular figure. we've given that one to the blues, right? under this scenario, we're getting ahead of ourselves a little bit, assigning montana, giving this to the republicans. here's the challenge for the democrats. their best

it's hard to imagine if much laughter at shaheen headquarters has this race has tightened up. shaheen maintained at least a ten-point polling lead for the last six months, even to see that disappear in the last few weeks. chief political correspondent paul cameron with a look at how that happened. >> reporter: thanks, megyn. the u.s. senate race in new hampshire may show how potent the race could be. in this race, it's a virtual dead heat. jeanne shaheen going after republican challenger scott brown. he's a republican. last, the u.s. senator from massachusetts. because he's not from new hampshire, the phrase of carpet bagger has been thrown around. she joked about it using the very controversial issue of immigration reform to talk about keeping scott brown out of new hampshire. >> we sort of let this guy sneak over the border. you probably have noticed that we've been debating border security a little bit in the campaign. literally, we didn't do enough to secure the southern border in new hampshire. >> she's voted not to secure the border, not to send troops to the border. i h

>> i think that jeanne shaheen never took her eye off the ball. she was able to rally women in particular around a lot of issues that are most important to women, refrom ducktive rights and birth control, and at one point in the campaign, especially when things started to tilt in scott brown's direction as he came on stronger, she really made a point to let women know that scott brown was not necessarily a vote for women's rights based on his previous voting record in massachusetts. and, of course, the carpet bagger label has stuck with scott brown, whether or not it's valid. i think that was a factor for some people. but ultimately, you know, i think voters here in new hampshire are feeling pretty comfortable right now. our unemployment rate is not too bad compared to the rest of the country, and so where in some states it might be people are looking to vote for change and they want something to happen, here in new hampshire anyway, things haven't been so bad. the economy has turned around enough that i think people maybe voted for more of what h

you talked about how scott brown is tying jeanne shaheen to president obama. he has wasted absolutely no opportunities during this campaign to tie her to president obama who is incredibly unpopular in this state. his approval numbers are in the 30 percentage points here and he at every turn scott brown has tied her to president obama saying both jeanne shaheen and president obama have left the country vulnerable to the ebola virus, to terrorism. he's talked about isis in the campaign. now, countering that, jeanne shaheen has painted scott brown as an outsider. he held a senate seat in massachusetts for two years before losing that seat in 2012, he has a vacation home in new hampshire. he's only lived here in new hampshire for a little less than a year full time so she has taken every opportunity to paint scott brown as an outsider. they're both very good campaigners, both very good fund-raisers and that's where we are right now. they are in a virtual dead heat coming into today. so voter turnout is key. we're getting good numbers in manchester. this is old sch

according to critics of shaheen's plan the results were devastating.the law drove up premiums and drove insurers out of the state. the same critics now claim the affordable care act which superseded state laws. if anything made matters worse. not only is there less competition so far, but the narrow networks are even narrower than expected. >> prior to january 1, 2014, you had access to nationwide network to all providers and hospitals. >> based in hempstead, new hampshire tom heart was national association of health underwriters. he says the new obamacare network doesn't cover out of state treatment except for emergencies. >> that's a big difference for someone who lives in new hampshire, because many people prefer to have access to boston based facilities or massachusetts hospitals. >> shaheen is up for reelection wouldn't talk to us. but when she speaks to us in public these days she doesn't siem to want credit for obamacare. >> i wouldn't design it that way. i wasn't the person writing the law. hindsight is always 2020. >> we spoke with someone mor

that what is jean shaheen trying to do?he's trying to get female voters to feel scott brown is not on their side. what does scott brown do? he says i'm pro-choice, which is true despite his part of that legislation. and hearing this from jean shaheen who has voted six years with barack obama. this is the gop playbook. what is the charges? my opponent doesn't like children. come back and say, yeah, she was seen in a room with president obama. so republicans very much trying to use the president's unpopularity against democrats in every instance they can. >> how much do you think tv presence affects these races? does it matter if you're good on tv? if you're good obviously in a debate it will help. how important has tv become in penetrating the electorate? >> i think increasingly tv is most of the ball game. candidates don't do quite as much in terms of town halls and pressing the flesh. they spend millions on these attack ads. even if they're not very good, you do enough retakes you can get a reasonable commercial out of it.

i think shaheen pulls it out. it will be a very close call but i think she will basically pull through. >> caller: says brown in a come from behind victory. >>> new hampshire stays democratic. okay. north carolina, incumbent democrat kay hagin vs. republican tom tillos. >> tillos has had $25 million in attack ads dumped on his head. normally i'm surprised he's not in jail after that kind of stuff but i think he's coming on at the end of this week. and i think kay hagin has run into some problems. she is a very tough competitor. she is a tough candidate. but i think that north carolina is going to go with tillos, put him in the united states senate. >> kay hagin is the incumbent. she has had $30 million of attack ads dumped on her head, beginning last year. and most of the polls she maintains a slight lead. so she has been consistent. i think she pulls it out. >> yeah. i think kay hagin has the advantage of a lot of high emotions on the left in north carolina. they are fired up. we will see now. if they don't -- ag

shaheen versus brown.f these states go red, let me take this off, this tells you, if shaheen loses to scott brown and kay hagan loses to thom tillis, if we're saying early in the night those states are republican, forget about it. if not a wave, a huge ripple for the republican party. let's assume the democrats hold the blues, as i say. new hampshire, president obama won it twice. north carolina, he won it once. iowa and colorado, republicans are ahead, but assume the democrats by ground game can hold on to that, that's when the night gets interesting as we go later and later. that would put up 49-45. and then here with these states left, all of them red states all of them president obama lost twice. democrats would have to get one more from an unfavorable territory. >> who will control congress? >> that's the big question. let's say this is where we are. republicans are saying we'll win colorado and iowa. say for the sake of argument, let's say they split them. republicans get iowa but not new hampshire a

some show him narrowly behind jeanne shaheen and one poll showing him leading. what does that tell you? well, like many races, it is something of a referendum on the president's policies. scott brown isn't running a campaign based on what all jeanne shaheen has done wrong. she's quite popular in this state. he's running based on her voting record, calling her a rubber stamp for the president. she's calling him a carpet bagger. can't seem to make up his mind what he wants to run for or where. because of all of this excitement, we could see record voter turnout here in new hampshire. jake? >> a hard-fought race. michelle kosinski, pamela brown, thank you so much. what's election night without nail biting? we'll look at canada's closing the gaps in the home stretch and it's not just balance of the power in the senate. it's how the race for governor could affect two key races. back after this. >>> meet charlie crist. he used to be a republican governor. then marco rubio ran against him in a republican senate primary. he knew he was going to lose and ran as an indepe

up in new hampshire, another democratic incumbent, jeanne shaheen, one of those republicans were picking this up, makes it a lot easier to find their road to six seats. but as you can see here, we have her ahead, just 16% in, but our models also seem to indicate that shaheen has a good lead. but we'll see how big it is later down the road. but the big surprise to me that tells you a little bit about this environment, it really was a republican environment, is what's going on in virginia. most of the vote that's come in is from republican territory. ed gillespie wins here. one of the reminders in 2012, if you remember, took a long time for barack obama to get the lead when he carried the state of virginia. the late reporting counties are in the washington, d.c. suburbs. so our models indicate that warner is likely to be able to hold a small lead when all the votes are counted. but this tells you something about the nature of the national election. >> always a debate between whether people are voting in their local elections or sending a signal nationally. >> i think they are sending a sig

shaheen in new hampshire against scott brown.'s characterization of this race is too early to call at this point. 9% of the expected vote in. in new jersey the senate race there, cory booker the democratic incumbent is projected as the winner by nbc news as is massachusetts democratic incumbent ed markey. in mississippi, thad cochran had a heck of a fight in the republican primary, but he is the projected winner tonight. nbc news projecting that thad cochran has been re-elected as has republican incumbent susan colins in the great state of maine. from a long way out, it looked like she might have a fight on this one, but it was hers to lose and she did not. illinois senate candidate dick durbin re-elected. democratic incumbent there, he's the projected winner according to nbc news projections. in tennessee, lamar alexander, the republican incumbent is projected to hold on to his seat in tennessee. now, in the great state of oklahoma we've actually got both senate seats up. at the end of his most recent full term, he's projected t

jeanne shaheen facing incumbent scott brown. he is the former senator from massachusetts that gained national fame when he beat mart why copely. now, following that loss, he decided to move here to new hampshire where he is now fighting yet another senate seat battle for the gop. shaheen, who is also a former new hampshire governor, often works to remind voertsz that he just moved across the border, and he has been fighting that carpet bagger label and working to tie shaheen to president obama. we talked to voters about what we think. >> i think we need a change in new hampshire, and i am an independent, and i went straight republican this time. >> we voted for jeanne shaheen. we feel she's done a great job, and we want to see her stay in our state. >> it's been a neck and neck battle. it will be interesting to see what happens. the polls close at 8:00 tonight. this will be kind of our first glimpse as far as senate races are concerned across the nation as to which way possibly the nation will be going. all eyes on new hampshire

or just jeanne shaheen ran a better campaign? >> yeah, jeanne shaheen ran a good campaign. and this is one of those, it stands out now, the polling before this election said shaheen would probably win by about this margin. in a way, it's not a surprise. but when you see the wave that carried all these other republican candidates, like a tom tillis in north carolina. it suggested something else might have been going on here in new hampshire. i think what it was, was the carpet bagging thing to a small extent giving an example here. this is concord, this is the third largest city in new hampshire. the capital city. this produces democratic votes usually. what we're seeing in other places around the country is that you look at the obama 2012 levels, the democratic candidates wanted to reach. they weren't reaching those levels, they weren't getting that kind of turnout. well, what you saw in the big democratic vote producing areas in new hampshire last night was jeanne shaheen was hitting the obama numbers. obama in concord in 2012 got 68% of the vote. jeanne shaheen got 68% la

the second time, i had republicans who were part of that committee come to me with shaheen and say ok, we've got it this time. we have five amendments that make this bill so good, bring it to the floor, and the republicans told me, in the presence of jeanne shaheen and others, we will vote for cloture. just before that vote took place, they wanted to vote on keystone. they said no, we want an up or down vote. i said yes. they came back and said we will only want to vote if you guarantee we can win it. the bill was so awful as far as time consuming, we got nothing done. example after example. we tried to have votes and the republicans made a decision after obama was first elected that they would oppose everything that he wanted, and that's what they have done. they couldn't stop us in the congress where we had 58, 59, 60 senators, but that is the story. >> [indiscernible] >> i will tell you why. there are women here with me. i came to the senate in a sweep when reagan got wiped out. eight of us came. i served at that time with one woman, barbara mikulski. i have seen this institution c

jeanne shaheen hasn't done anything to tick anybody off. all of the analysis, including mine at the time was, well, maybe if there's a wave he has a chance to ride it. this is how close we are to some kind of wave, he is now within single digits of jeanne shaheen. he's still behind. but the fact that he's giving her a scare is the symptom of the fact that even in blue states, even in states like new hampshire, where obama won twice, democrats are still having trouble and president obama is not welcomed. >> this issue -- there is an issue in this election and it is president obama. and his job performance. and also, just the whole wave after wave of bad news from the border, from isis, from ebola that has hit -- max: i want to ask -- gwen: you reached out to newt gingrich and became speaker of the house in 2005 because the 2004 election took everybody by surprise. and you asked him, does it feel like that? he says it feels maybe like a rising tide. let's face it, he said all the low fruit's been picked here by the republicans. he says the th
