that station is closed.cers actually is on another train on another new jersey train. she says that announcements have gone out that this hoboken station is now closed. you can see the extensive damage here. mary schiavo was telling me it's certain that the train was going faster than it should have been as it came into this station. and somehow it crashed into the wall and as you can see, did severe damage to the station. brynn gingras is also here with me. the ntsb is on the scene. ambulances are on the scene rescuing people. >> the scary part is we don't know the number of injuries. but you are looking at this video and seeing how this train, this car, at least this one car is completely crumbled. we can imagine there are extensive injuries. but we don't know how extensive. the train went right through the station and that's what caused this damage. we know that emergency responders are monitoring this for multiple injuries. multiple ambulances and multiple paramedics have been brought to the scene. also

i'm in hoboken, new jersey and the train station, very historic train station. it's right on the water's edge and there's a helicopter, i cannot confirm if that's a medevac helicopter but i can confirm there's a helicopter that appears to be ready to take off at any moment just right there at a platform for the helicopters. but this is definitely an emergency situation. we are understanding there are at least 100 injured. search and rescue have been deployed to actually try to shore up that roof that had collapsed inside the terminal and to help evacuate anyone that is still in the train. what we are learning right here is that the train basically went, the front car went right into the station. so obviously people were standing there, it's morning rush hour here in new york and in hoboken, people going to new york for work. so it's just a very active situation with i would say hundreds of emergency personnel on the scene. >> jean, stand by. i was telling our viewers about leon. he took the video you are looking at right now and he talked about what this thing l

the train station is closed as well as that path station. we continue to report on this and i now hand it off to my partner, craig melvin. good morning, craig. >> stephanie, good morning to you. we continue with more on that terrible scene out of hoboken, new jersey. again, a major commuter train crash there. it happened a little more than two hours ago at the hoboken train terminal as the new jersey transit train entered the station, there are reports, multiple reports of injuries, multiple injuries. major damage at that station. witnesses say the train was not moving at a high rate of speed when it plowed into the platform. one witness says passengers were thrown off their feet. there's a massive emergency response at the scene. new jersey state police say they are sending what they're calling multiple assets to the scene. the federal railroad investigation said they're on the way and national transportation safety information is gathering information about the crash. two law enforcement sources told wnbc's jonathan dietz, the investigativ

i was at the same station. kind of walking through the terminal and trying to connect to the p.a.t.h. train which goes under the hudson river to new york city, when i stopped and sort of saw the accident had just transpired. it was a ton of debris in the area. there was water coming from the roof. it was eerie silence. people were just sort of trying to figure out what had just transpired. there were people climbing out of the windows, trying to get themselves to safety. i spoke to a number of people who were on the train who were injured and some of them bleeding who said the train, it just wouldn't stop, it just wouldn't stop. it was sort of the recurring theme from the folks who were there. >> how fast was it going as it pulled into the station? any sense? >> i can't tell you that. i wasn't there when it actually transpired. it was only a matter of seconds or a minute after it transpired when i arrived so i can't say that i saw the accident itself but the immediate aftermath was unfortunately fairly devastat

station. it's not a thruway. everybody knows you're going to stop and eventually stop there. did they lose situational awareness? was there a medical situation on board? was there a technical problem? i've got say, i think that they've also got to continue to ask, was there any hint of an intentional act? and the only way you'll find that out is by interviewing the crew and downloading the black box data that, of course, should be on that train. they're going to want to talk to the engineer, really very similar questions to what you may have seen in the movie "sully" which the ntsb says was an unfair characterization of their work but it was accurate in that they proceed and go through every investigation and asking the same detailed questions about the crew, the pilot and the engineer. have they been drinking? do they have marital problems? have they been sleeping enough? et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. they'll build that entire narrative so they can try to figure out what happened. >> tom c
