steve kornacki, appreciate it.o digest there. >>> want to bring in david jolly, jonathan lemire and sabrina siddiqui. david, let's start with you. as you are looking at the numbers, they are shocking to see all together, especially in that head-to-head matchup between president biden and former president donald trump. is there anything that you think could actually shake those numbers for the former president? >> not really in the republican primary. i think at this point, we know the indictments and charges have helped him. they strengthed his hold of a lead. the one unknown is if he went on trial. it's not to suggest it takes him down. it might move him up. there appears to be no trial that would occur before he has the nomination secured in mid march. i would suggest one of the reasons is because it is very hard -- if all of the other republican candidates -- recall when they were asked, will you vote for donald trump if he is a criminal convict? they raised their hand. how do they say, i would vote for this guy

incumbent president, and talking about things that move numbers around the edges, that might. >> steve kornackiformer republican congressman from florida, and he's an msnbc political analyst. what is your reaction after hearing from steve? >> i think democrats ought to be concerned, when donald trump, one of the most controversial candidates of all-time, somebody engulfed in legal troubles, and somebody who is really not liked by most americans is tied with joe biden in the race for president. this should be sounding alarm bells across the democratic establishment and they have to find a way to strengthen the president's re-election campaign, because right now a tied race does not bode well for president biden. >> yeah, some of the issues of likability, and the whole issue of corrupt, and then the concept of accomplishments. that's -- you know, i mean, say what you will about president biden, but there have been a slew of accomplishments, and you may agree or disagree with some of them, but a slew of accomplishments in the first two years and going forward, and yet this poll says that at least,

steve kornacki, a lot of interesting revelations in this new polling. st ended on that poll right there, more voters -- more voters concerned about biden's age than trump's indictments. what's your reaction to that? >> look, age is a baked-in concern. the biden campaign knows age is a big factor. at times biden himself will make light of it. they try to explain the ways in which that translates to experience and wisdom and the ability to broker some of the historic economic legislative victories he has been able to gain, in pulling us back from covid and all the ways that his age lends to experience. but it is -- while it is not fatal, it is a concern that's going to remain part of this campaign process. it is informative in as much as it tries to demonstrate that younger voters are feeling disconnected from biden. we're seeing there's a lack of enthusiasm, a great enthusiasm gap among voters ages 18-35. he's not going to be able to climate change how old he s but he has the ability to meet voters where they are, get out to the states, engage younger voe

nbc news national correspondent steve kornacki is joining us. , a couple things jump out here. first of all, we're talking about trump versus biden in part because trump, look at this, "the wall street journal" poll, look at the republican race, all of this poll conducted after that first republican debate, after republicans absorbed all the coverage of that debate. you heard about, hey this candidate surged and that candidate surged. donald trump at nearly 60% in this poll. ron desantis barely in double digits, everybody else in single digits, a commanding trump lead before the debate and after the debate. take a look, i think what is noticeable among republican primary voters, trump is extremely popular. but it is not like his opponents aren't. desantis, scott, haley, the only unpopular republicans among republican voters, mike pence and chris christie. so, trump's opponents are liked by republicans, republicans are saying they like trump as their candidate. when it comes to all the legal issues here among republicans, look, do you think it is

joining us now with more is nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki.these numbers show you? >> yeah, jose, as you said, look, on the republican side here, donald trump he skipped that first debate, looks like he's skipping the second debate. he's had all sorts of indictments, legal dramas this year. all sorts of things his republican opponents thought would make him vulnerable with republican primary voters, that the primary voters would think twice about getting behind trump again. instead, we've only seen trump grow his lead, 43 points in our newest poll. back in april, trump's lead was 15 in our poll. it has tripled basically in the spring and summer months. you mentioned the head to head by trump, tied at 46 in our poll here, remember, in the 2020 campaign, if you look back at essentially all the polling from late 2019 through the 2020 campaign, biden led consistently trump in all of the polling, ended up winning the popular vote by 4.5 points. the electoral college is where it was close. trump performing better in the poll -- >> i'm going to inter

joining me now, nbc news political correspondent steve kornacki, my good friend.e election goes right to donald trump? >> it's interesting. our average of the polls out there on the republican side, you continue to see just a dominating trump lead. there's been a talk out there, certainly from trump's opponents who are telling republicans, hey, look, he's going to have an electability problem. republicans were dragged down by him in 2022. there's all the legal drama, lost in 2020, 2018 was a bad midterm for republicans, but what's interesting when you start looking behind these numbers is that trump's strength with republican voters really isn't so much in spite of electability concerns, it's because they believe he's so electable. at least in part. this has been asked a number of different ways recently, the most direct morning consult poll this week, ask republicans who has the best chance of beating biden, more than 60% said donald trump. "the new york times" did a head to head of trump and desantis. one is sort of the ideas behind the desantis campaign is that

joining me now steve kornacki. steve, explain the numbers. >> katy, really interesting.else in double digits. this sort of the backdrop for the next republican debate which also looks like donald trump won't be participating in. trump's republican critics, his republican opponents they thought, they hoped, many said by skipping that first presidential debate trump would alienate some republican voters and he would be giving an opportunity to his opponents to move up in the polls, but trump didn't lose any ground. in the summer he was barely at 50%. now he's at 60%. ron desantis' his support earlier was over 30%, it's been cut in half to 16%. everybody else in single digits. if this is the direction republicans are going, if they nominate donald trump for the rematch, this is what our poll shows. trump and biden tied in a potential rematch for 2024. one piece of context that's interesting on this. we polled -- i found 11 nbc polls from the year leading up to the trump/biden race. it was never tied. it was never closer than 6 points. that was true in just about all the pol

attorney paul charlton and new jersey guru in all things political and otherwise steve kornacki. so ken, give us the highlights. it is a 39 page indictment. >> a speaking indictment, a sprawling bribery conspiracy indictment against senator menendez, his wife nadine and three people accused of paying them bribes. and all the defendants say that they will fight the charges. this indictment says that menendez helped these three men with a series of official acts as you said in exchange for cash, gold bars, mercedes convertible, furniture, exercise equipment, even an air purifier. it says the conduct began in 2018 the year senator menendez was reelected after a jury failed to convict him as you mentioned in that separate corruption case. the indictment says federal agents searched menendez's home about a year ago and found over $480,000 in cash much of it stuffed in envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets and a safe and some of the envelopes contained the fingerprints of one of the alleged bribe payers. this indictment importantly says that menendez used his leverage as chairman o

a new analysis from our own steve kornacki finds that the president's supporters are absolutely dug inles at this point in the campaign. two recent polls bear this out, about 2/3 of trump supporters say they are firmly or definitely in his corner. let's bring in david, an iowa gop strategist who served as campaign adviser for mitt romney and jeb bush. you have spent 30 years in the trenches of gop politics. any advice for trump's republican rivals? >> yeah, i mean, look, it's a tough race right now nationally, particularly if you look at the numbers that your colleague steve kornacki has kind of put together an analysis. the campaign is not really happening nationally. it is happening in iowa. it's happening in new hampshire. the national primary numbers really aren't a good reflection of where this race is. now, former president trump does have a significant lead in iowa and new hampshire, however, in iowa in particular, about 72% of caucus goers are open to someone not named trump, and so that's what we're going to see this weekend with the big event coming up at the faith and freedo

>> steve kornacki, thank you very much. appreciate that. that steve was talking about. it is a far different world, politics-wise, than it was the 2016 when you were involved in it. what do you see here? >> yeah, i'm not sure that the democratic conventional wisdom that trump would be the easiest to beat is correct. i long thought that for a couple of reasons. you have ron desantis as the alternative to trump who has terrible interpersonal skills. bad candidate skills and has run to the right of trump on the culture war issues that are anathema to the suburban swing voters that move to the democrats in the last eight years. so, and donald trump for all of his problems, you know, always had this reputation as being, you know, a little bit less obsessed with the cultural issues, with the christian conservative issues than you would get out of a mike pence or ron desantis, that turns off secular voters, noncollege white voters who don't go to church, et cetera. i don't think it is necessarily wrong that trump is potentially stronger in a genera

for the numbers, let's bring in steve kornacki at the big board. headlines here. on the republican side, first of all, here is where the republican race stands in our poll. nationally, at least, donald trump with an enormous lead over his nearest competitor ron desantis, a 43-point gap between trump at 59%, desantis at 16, everybody else in single digits. this has been steady and consistent for months for trump. back in april, trump's lead over desantis at this point was just 15 points. desantis was over 30%. desantis's support has come down basically in half since then and trump's lead has basically tripled since april. there have been indictments since april. there was that first republican debate that donald trump skipped. a lot of things happened that rival candidates were counting onto make this race tighter. instead, it's going in the opposite direction. another debate looming in a couple of days, another debate that donald trump is going to be skipping, it appears. if republicans do indeed nominate the former president for a rematch with the

nbc's stooe kornacki is at the big board with more. steve, what can you tell us?d in to the second republican presidential debate. and the total number is 9.3 million. that's the television viewership. remember, this was on fox business. this was on the fox news channel. this was on univision. you add them all together, 9.3 million. put that in some perspective, that is down 27% from the audience for the first republican debate. that was a month ago. that had 12.8 million viewers. went from 12.8 down to 9.3 million. and some more context for this, if you go all the way back to the start of the 2016 republican campaign -- remember, they had a bunch of debates in 2015, 2016. this is when donald trump first won the nomination. if you take all those debates and then you look at the two we have had so far this year and you rank them by the number of viewers for each debate, i think it's very striking. that debate this week, dead last. 9.3 million viewers is the lowest number of television viewers for any debate in the trump era let's call it, among republicans. nearly
