tom kierein tracking your "storm team 4" weather. hey, tom. >> what a storm, incredible. everything has been transformed by that blustery strong wind and the heavy snow we had yesterday. here is the scene now at union station. it is all snow covered there, and many of the side streets have not been touched. many of the main arteries have been plowed. our tower camera looking down at the entrance of nbc 4. you can see it has been plowed, but all the side streets for the most part have not been touched yet. here's the last of the storm. it has exited new england. cape cod here. new york city got hammered, about 26 inches there. our temperatures now are very cold. we're in the 20s around the bay. around the me tree area, hovering around the 20s. northern western suburbs in the teens. look at luray, only 9 there. just in the teens in the shenandoah valley where they got a lot of snow. shepherdstown, over 4 inches of snow. 17.8 at reagan national. there's controversy on whether it's the storm total. 35 inches north and west of washington. southern suburbs ended up with 2 feet

"storm team 4" meteorologist tom kierein has more. d morning, tom. >> we've had dramatic drop overnight. now, sunrise was about five minutes ago. we're not seeing it, though, because we've got a lot of clouds around. there's a live view, cotton ball clouds over the capitol. it's all overcast this morning. temperatures under the clouds are in the mid-30s in the metro area. nearby suburbs in the 30s. around the bay, upper 30s. farther to our south, a few locations are at or above freezing. manassas, warrenton, and luray, and up in the mountains of west virginia. the drawer picking up some aloft here this sort of circular gray zone where it's trying to reach the ground. but farther south, south of richmond and up south of fredericksburg is where it is now beginning to reach the ground. but these are just lead t leading edge of some flurries that will be moving into the metro area by 9:00 this morning but most of it melting as it's going to be landing on pavement above freezing and temperatures above freezing as well. a look at the hour-by

tom kierein now, the snow has picked up in parts of the d.c. metro area. what are you seeing in northwest? >> reporter: i don't think it's ever abated. since i've been here at predawn, 5:00 a.m., it's been snowing at the same rate. what's changed is the wind. the wind is beginning to whip here. in fact, the flag is snapping and flapping in a very stiff wind here. the circle in front of the nbc 4 entrance. the wind is blowing strong enough that we are getting gusts of wind that are causing drifting. snowplow drivers are clearing the parking lot constantly because of the wind, keeps drifting over repeatedly. look at the snowfall totals. as much as 20 to 22 inches. panhandle to near harper's ferry, around frederick and montgomery county and to loudoun county, 18, 19-inch reports coming in as well as fairfax county. frederick and points south as you showed on the radar where they've only had -- i say only, eight, nine, ten inch, they'll add on to that maybe as that fills in now with more snow coming down. southern maryland, as well. more snow on the way there.

tom kierein, good morning, tom. >> we have almost 15 inches out here on the storm team 4 weather deck. just 50 feet away from me, the wind is whipping through an open area here and the snow is drifting. the wind is gusting up to 35 miles an hour. it is snowing. as hard as it has snowed all morning right now here in northwest. this system is stalling out in place, cranking more snow back over us. here are some of the snow totals reported so far, bethesda, 18, tysons corner, 19 inches. southern maryland around the bay, there it's around 10 to 12 inches. look at the totals, panhandle of west virginia to happener's. front royal to lurey, 14 to 16 inches and then down 95, there are lighter amounts but don't think it's over, fredericksburg and points south. there is a blooming area on the radar of more snow that is developing and it's going to dump another four or five inches there around fredericksburg and points west towards culpepper. the fire departments are recommending you clear now around the hire hydrants that is near you. god forbid there's a fire. they recommend you clear about th

traffic impacts are extensive, tom kierein is out in them this morning. good morning, tom. >> reporter: yeah, we're on 395 now southbound and the main roads have been treated here in much of northern virginia. you can see 395 looking at our forward camera showing some patches of actual dry pavement. they got dried out by the sun yesterday. and in between the lanes you can see a little bit of the salt, as well that has been put down. so chemicals are doing their job even though temperatures are down into the teens on this monday morning. it is generally quite good on the major interstates and 66, 395, and the beltway in northern virginia. it's the side streets that are still a major problem. some have not even been plowed yet. hopefully later today we'll get some of the side streets plowed. but for now, 395 is looking good here in northern virginia. >> good to see that out of the front of the storm team 4 x 4. right now outer loop at telegraph road, crash just happened. overturned vehicle on the side of the roadway. we'll get more information about that one

tom kierein is dealing with the cold this morning. he has some hints to help you get your car going and keep it going in this kind of chill. >> reporter: yeah, you may not like the cold weather. the car doesn't like it here. we got the low tire pressure warning light here. all four tires are down on pressure. when the temperature drops by ten degrees, each ten degree drop you can lose 10% of the tire pressure. also if you're checking your car, it's important to check your wipers. you don't want to have bad wipers when you've got snow coming down or even rain. also, in addition to wipers and the tire pressures, make sure you check the car battery. last thing you want when you're getting out early in the morning, run to work, you crank the key and nothing happens. cars don't like cold weather either. now let's check on the roads this morning with melissa. got a problem in northern virginia. >>> brand-new problem in northern virginia southbound gall lows just after arlington boulevard. brand-new crash here taking a look at inner loop at

storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell and tom kierein will have the latest on that in a minute. first, news 4's molette green outside the -- in prince william county. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're at the lot off 123, dangerously cold out here. not much traffic at this point at this commuter lot. i talked to a gentleman sitting in his car, just moments ago. he's waiting on the bus to get into the city. but, of course, waiting inside his car, which is very smart to do. it is bitterly cold. dangerously cold. if you don't have on the proper layers. you're not going to really do well in this kind of weather. especially concerned about the little kids who will be at bus stops a little bit later on this morning. around the region, local municipalities have, you know, initiated their hypothermia plan. they are in effect, which offers folks who needed shelter a warm place to stay, warming centers, even some emergency housing. and if you see someone in need, you should know you can call 311 and that offers help to those in the district, montgomery and prince george's coun

talking about dealing with the icy road, tom kierein out there in the storm team 4 x 4. are the roads where you are? >> reporter: i'm in alexandria and i just posted a video of double trouble here. major water main break, flooding at king and north quaker lane. right now we're on early street right off of duke street. and this street has just one narrow lane that was maybe allowed once. but coming up here, we see the plow had to stop. couldn't get any farther because it's going a little bit uphill. and likely did not get any farther here. we're just off duke street on early lane right here in alexandria. many neighborhoods are looking like this on this monday morning. how are some of the other roads looking, melissa? >> that is really a great depeks of what the neighborhood streets look like. on the main roads, we're okay. and we're nice and xreen because of the light volume. you can see some little red and orange spots, some yellow. thoses are plows and sat trucks. a brand new problem, 50 shut down at st. louis road because of a fire response there. 66 inbound at sudley

tom kierein is on the weather deck. >> isolation zebra. >> i like it. >> the bright sun bouncing off the snow can cause snow blindness. if you're out here without sunglasses for any more than a few minutes, you definitely need them. four things to consider for today. if you're going to be getting outside and getting some shoveling in. make sure first of all you clear the entire car of snow, especially the roof. get the snow off the roof of the car. take frequent breaks while you're shoveling. don't overdo it. don't try to do it all at once. clear snow from your local hydrant and wear sunglasses. will be very important. what to expect on the roads. well, there are still many of them. snows that have been plowed may have turned over to ice. they'll eventually get to some of the neighborhoods by late today, maybe tomorrow. it is still dangerous to get out even though the cabin fever may be setting in and you want to get out. the best idea is stay cozy, stay warm, stay with nbc 4. >> got it. >> got it. thank you, tom. all the snow have got people going stir-crazy because you're stuck ins
